  1. check the wire itself where its clamped onto the terminal. You might be good and tight on the post but often its the wire connection itself. I'm sure it got bent around during installation.
  2. The largest I've used measured 25.5" diameter and they barely rubbed the front mudflaps on my 92 loyale. They were some studded snow tires on 14 pugs, 195/75/14. A friend recently picked up some new leftover 13" snow tires that measured 24.7". That's about the biggest 13 you can find and it'll be used or new old stock.
  3. I had similar problems starting when hot and ended up replacing the distributor, problem solved.
  4. I have a friend here in St. Louis with a carbed ea81, only 55000 miles, already out of the car. Not sure he'd part with it but he might in exchange for your ea81Turbo motor.
  5. You do need a spring compressor. I'd get the smallest ones they have since the larger ones kind of interfere with the operation.
  6. i'm pretty sure we loved it but I was 24 then and could put up with alot. We had so much stuff in the back that there was probably a bunch of bags we were laying on. Pretty sure we had the skis on a pass thru to the front, where the heat was supposed to be coming from. We were pretty seasoned to the cold at the time. I omitted the overnight stay in jail somewhere in northern Nevada. The metal bed in the cell being worse than the brat seats, I heard.
  7. Three of us took a brat with a topper from Vail CO to Lake Tahoe, then Yosemite, then back to Vail in 1985 at the end of ski season. We took all our skis too. So we shared time in the back with skis which at the time were 205-210's. We pretty much camped out of that thing for 2 weeks. My first Subaru trip.
  8. Theres an access point to look inside tank after you remove the fuel level sensor. Its got a rubbery gasket that's... well, be careful. Pretty sure its on the back of the tank. You can see the 'sock' once you remove that.
  9. pull tank, fill with gravel, shake, empty, rinse tank. Also theres a little raised metal screen, kind of like a sock. Its probably all clogged up and you might as well use a long screw driver and remove it too.
  10. Got to see this new ride head into town this morning and then take a test drive. What a score!!! Can't wait to see what it becomes.
  11. Its been raining a lot here too. If you think its possible something got wet, I'd open the hood and run a fan on to attempt to dry things out. I'm pretty sure my distributor rubber gasket was trashed and led to some non starting after washing the motor. worth a shot if you have a dry spot and a fan.
  12. Really sorry to hear that story. I've had pretty good luck so far. Found my 92 Loyale in IL. Got those pugs from you, that was a great deal and we had a great ride back to St. Louis via gravel roads. Then last year, I found an 84 GL wagon at a tow yard in St. Louis. My friend bought it and it only had 52000 miles on it. The titling and getting it back on the road was well worth it. Last week I bought a parts loyale sedan for $300 after my loyale motor died. I'm driving the sedan today, its only got 133000 miles, cold ac, newer tires. Itd pass inspection in a heartbeat but its motor is getting pulled this weekend. Long story short, seek and ye shall find. I like looking either close to home or somewhere where I can get a friend to check it out ahead of time. If I find something you'd be interested in, I'll pass it along cuz I really like those pugs you sold me and no man should have his wife think he's got a bad Subaru habit. I know how that feels.
  13. replaced the distributor and it starts fine so far. Thanks Subasaurus.
  14. welcome from another Missourian. found a bunch of good info here for my older Subaru.
  15. yes, the little gasket between the cap and distributor is folded on one side so I'll come back with silicone after I replace the other piece. And yes, when I washed my motor, no start til it dried out. Sure hope that parts car is still at the junkyard. Theres really not many of these old subarus around my area.
  16. thanks. I've got access to a junkyard loyale so I'll be pulling those parts if not more. I cleaned some connections on that module below the coil. It had a little corrosion most likely from some bubbling out the coolant catch tank from an old head gasket leak.
  17. My 92 Loyale has been acting up lately. It starts fine when its cold or been sitting for more than an hour or 45 minutes. If its hot, especially after sitting maybe 10-20 minutes, it wont start. It cranks over normally but at this point, I'm getting no spark from coil wire. I did replace the coil today but its still the same. What next?
  18. agreed w/ tom. After I replaced the bushings I was still missing the spring and it wasn't a lot better. The spring is key I ended up using a spring I had laying around and cut to fit. Its worked great. The roll pins are a pain.
  19. We just did bushings on my loyale. WE. Have a helper in the car and move the shifter (pretty sure it was reverse) to gain the best access to those roll pins. There were 2 roll pins in mine. They aren't easy but tap or press the smallest one out towards drivers side of car, then the larger one same way. Tap first but be careful not to mushroom those pins. It helps to make a small press, pretty sure there were 3 of us, 2 under the car squeezing the channel locks to press em out. I had no bushings in that mount nor the spring. If your springs not there, make one. Hope it helps cuz its sure been nice with the new bushings.
  20. I ended up getting end link bushings from subarupartswarehouse but also added a couple washers on each end to keep them from sliding around and off the center of the bushing.
  21. I think it'll be obvious once you get in there. You may drop the tank and end up getting a new one right away after you look at it. If you clean it with the rocks and it falls apart, well... I'd see what a junkyard tank costs. Once you get a good look at it, especially cleaned, up, you'll know. And bring some extra food on your road trip just in case.
  22. I was skeptical at first but we cleaned out the rusty tank from an 84 wagon by DRAINING and removing the tank, putting about a gallon of clean gravel in it, then two of us shook it up, dumped out the gravel along with about a cup of dusty rust and gas residue, blew it out, done.
  23. 22 in winter, near 25 in summer.
  24. Welcome, you've come to the right place. Also from STL myself. My brother has a 97 outback so we've tackled a few things like timing belts, etc. And I do know a local guy that's into subarus that may take on some work.
