  1. I am new to all this subaru stuff but wondering can I get away with putting differt heads on and get away from the DOHC heads? If so what are my options? Thanks
  2. Ok so I am new to this as of yesterday, So as I have been looking for an engine for my car and learning how to do a swap from 2.5 to 2.2 ( Thanks to everyone that helped me) I found a 1993 legacy with 128,000 on it, in pretty good shape for $400.00 but the head gasket is leaking he says, it still runs fine but loses water and the heater stopped working. Easy fix? could it be the water pump? what engine would this car have? I think for the price it would be a good project car for me to really get my feet wet. What do you think? Thanks God Bless
  3. So are you saying that if it is an obd1 I can take the harness off my 96 2.5DOHC and put it on the obd1 intake?
  4. Please help! I am going to do a 2.5 to 2.2 swap, I found a 1995 2.2 out of an Impreza. AT, EGR, dual port exhaust. The guy at the wrecking yard says it is a late model and is an obd2 which would make it perfect. How can I know for sure? I am going to drive a long ways to get this engine because it only has 96k on it. I have been told that only legacy`s switched to obd2 in 1995 but then another kind gentleman told me that is not true. How do I know for sure?? vin# on engine? vin# from the car? or are there markings on the engine itself? I am new to all this Subaru stuff, Because I bought a 1996 outback with a 2.5 DOHC Need I say more? Thank you for reading and helping.
  5. Please forgive me if I sound stupid but in the last week I have learned that Subarus have come with a multitude of engines with different numbers and letters pertaining to this year and that model! and being new to subies it is quite frustrating and confusing, not like the old days when I worked on Datsuns and Dodges. Now that I have been thinking about it the engine at the wrecking yard is out of a 96 impreza I think AT, EGR, Dual port would this be an OBD2? and if so will it go right in? Also please, how do you tell between an obd1 and an obd2 if you don`t know the difference? I cannot afford to make a mistake on this. Thanks
  6. Thanks, when I said ring gear I meant flex plate. Are the engines from a legacy and Impreza different? I was told a 95 2.2 with egr and dual port exhaust would drop right in and plug right in, but he did say a legacy would work best. I have not bought the 2.2 yet.
  7. Ok I am new to all this forum stuff but it sure sound like there are a lot of people who care out there!! So thank you in advance. I purchased a 96 outback from a friend of mine who is a really good mechanic and a good man. The car had 187000 miles on it and the head gaskets had been replaced along with the radiator, water pump. all belts and hoses, brakes, struts, windshield, axels, axel seals, new radio, and a almost new set of snow tires! So I thought I would take a chance on it even though it had a lot of miles, ( hoping to get 30 to 40,000 out of it ) well a couple of months into it the check engine light came on and it started to miss, The diagnoses was low compression on # 3 cylnder. ( bad valve they think? ) I do not expect him to stand behind it because I bought a car with high mileage and he sold it to me right!!! So rather than spend money on a bad engine I started looking for another, Low mileage engines, rebuilt engines, engines with the top end redone ect. Then a gentleman told me about the 2.2 swap and how good these engines are and what to look for. I found in a wrecking yard from car-part.com a 95 2.2 out of an Impreza, auto trans, egr, dual port exhaust. The wrecking yard claims it has 96,000 on it and it has good compression!! 170 to 180 on all four, What other questions should I ask or things to look for? And what should I do to it before dropping it in besides switching my ring gear? Any comments or feed back will be greatly appreciated. Thanks again God Bless
