yes engine was warm, all injectors disconnected including cold start valve, all plugs removed, and throttle wide open when cranking engine. I borrowed the compression guage and it did seem suspect in terms of actual readings but it was the variance that concerned me. Why would one bank be so different - I could understand one cylinder being bad but both on the same side seems suspect to a head gasket. Thoughts??

I just did a compression check on my 94 Legacy to find clues as to where the oil was disappearing to. I loose about 1 quart per 500 miles. Engine runs fine, doesn't drip oil and doesn't appear to be burning oil but it is going somewhere. Compression check revealed 205 psi on cylinders 1 and 3 and 165/170 psi on cylinders 2 and 4 (drivers side) respectively. I added a teaspoon of oil to cylinder 2 and 4 and the pressure jumped up to where it should be whcih tells me that it is not in the head but rather the bore or rings. Anyone have any other thoughts before I pull the engine and swap it out. Engine only has 127k on it but I have only owned it since 100k and it was loosing oil when I got it.

I just replaced the timing belt on my 93 Legacy last night. While I was in there I noticed that the oil pump was seeping a bit so I removed it, cleaned the mating surfaces, and reinstalled it with a new O-ring from the dealer and some expensive anaerobic sealant and a new crankshaft seal from Napa Auto Parts. After buttoning everything up the engine fired up perfectly with no apparrent leaks (pheww). However, I was driving down the road today at highway speeds and after about 20 miles I noticed smoke in the rearview mirror. I pulled off at the first exit and stopped to examine things. Oil was leaking everywhere and there was a lot of it. I was very careful with my work and torqued everything to spec according to Haynes (except for the crankshaft pulley which I torqued to 115 ft-lbs per USMB). Has anyone had this happen??? Where should I start??? Please help??

I have a new to me 94 Legacy 2.2 with 102,000 miles on the engine. I just took it on a 3,000 mile trip to the mountains and found that it burned 1 quart of oil per 1000 miles on the way out and 1 quart of oil per 500 miles on the return trip. My last Subbie (85 GL Wagon) went several hundred thousand miles with little engine trouble. What are the most likely causes of this type of oil consumption?
