Bought a parts brat and It came with a rebuilt carb. I thought cool I'll spend a half hour and put it on. Yeah.... the new one doesnt choke itself and it smells real rich but lt does respond smoother than my old carb carb I don't know much about carbs is it possible to pull the choke stuff off my old carb and put it on the new? can i swap other parts to solve the gas/air mixture problem? could the problem be one is a feedback carb and one isn't cause i dont know how to tell the difference is it even worth my energy?

No Start & Coolant Temp Sensor
Tat2Brat replied to mtsinner7868's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
well Im not here to argue so I wont but the fact that i put a air temp sensor into where you say the knock sensor is suppose to be and my vehicle runs without error codes and my temp. sensor error code cleared itself seems strange I'm not saying your wrong I'm not an expert feel free to come up from oregon i'll buy you a drink and you can tell me about what sensors do what Other than that I'm out -
No Start & Coolant Temp Sensor
Tat2Brat replied to mtsinner7868's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Book says it's a flappy never had a problem with the MAF so i never took it apart to see for myself It's a project so i dont drive it much 1986 was a new and strange year for alot of things in subaru I would not be surprised to hear it had an elephant sensor I believe the only relevant info to this discussion and for the O.P. to take out of this is that there may be 2 or 3 temp. sensors and to beware of the possibilities -
EA81 Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor: Where?
Tat2Brat replied to Feanor's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
wont the single prong one fit in the same hole? If it does just splice a different connector onto the wire. Wire might be fried from the heat over the years anyways- 8 replies

I'd get the necessary gasket and O-ring combo take the sucker out and check the condition. I did this on mine not too long ago and from what I could see the internals were really solid I checked for any wiggle threw on the o rings then gasket and figured it would last another 30 years. But I've only ever done the one So don't take my word for it just my 2 cents

No Start & Coolant Temp Sensor
Tat2Brat replied to mtsinner7868's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I kindly disagree If your correct how come when i put this on my 1986 XT GL-10 it decided to run perfectly? Import Direct Ignition - Air Charge Temperature Sensor Part # 17-1339 Or I could take a picture of all 3 sensors on my vehicle if you're interested To original poster dunno if this is your problem and sorry for hijacking your thread -
No Start & Coolant Temp Sensor

air charge temp sensor reads the outside air to mix up the right fuel gas ratio will make the vehicle real hard to start on my xt it is on the passenger side way back on the block right before the trans. its got a single wire going to it spade connection looks like most temps sensors On my Gl-10 there is 3 temp sensors the one to ecu the one to dash and the air charge temp sensor Hope that helps -
I've never had coilover sleeves and im ignorant to them so i dunno how adjustable they are or if this is a stupid question(s)... So im wondering how can i figure out what length coilovers to order gonna get some ground control coilover sleeves for my FWD 86 xt gl-10 it says on their site 93-01 impreza coilovers come in 7" 8" or 9" Im most of the way thru the 5 lug swap for the front i was thinnking I would just put the ea82t suspension back on and measure from spring perch to top mount and order the closest set of coil overs since they are adustable but... Since it will have EJ stuff on it I dont think that would be accurate at all I have EJ coil springs hanging around So should i throw those on with the EJ stuff, set the car down then....? not drive it of course I was thinking cut the springs til i get about stock height of the xt and take the strut assembly off and then measure? sound good? since those coils springs are a throw away pair. I dont even know when ground control says 7" is that with the adjustable spring seat or just the spring? I Can contact them on that one i guess I think I can figure out the back a little easier since it has xt6 trailing arms just measure the distance between stock height and the difference (if there is any) with the xt6 stuff on the back and subtract that from the length of the stock rear assembly? and does anybody know if these coilovers will fit right into an ea82t top strut mount or do i Need EJ although I might have to get camber plates so im not sure that matters

oil leak front centre of oil pan
Tat2Brat replied to ARJ's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
My ea81 had a similiar sounding leak it was the oil pump gasket is there any other gaskets oil related gaskets you can think of that might be anywhere close to above the mentioned leak? -
WIsh i knew that sooner oh well Still not all the way done with my swap so I'll just spend the money for some coilovers

on the front EJ springs wont fit the ea82 top hat but the EJ top hat will fit the Ea82 strut mount Mocked that up yesterday on my gl-10 ....wait are the top hats slang for the top spring retaining cup under the strut mount or the strut mount itself? cause I mean the ej spring wont fit the ea82 spring retainer and the ea82 spring wont fit the ej strut if that didnt help this might WHEEL ADAPTERS http://www.shop.adapterkings.com/product.sc?productId=11

My T tops are leaking on the inner side of the top with the two pieces that slide into the slots water is sliding down the pseudo hinges and getting into the slots one side leaks into the cab the other side just holds the water If I take out all the bolts Silicone it and stick it back on wont I just be holding water in the slots and waiting for it to rust? I think im going to try to add a rubber strip above the slots so water avoids them completely But I dunno what do you guys think?
-
they fit the bottom spring perch yes Im not sure if how much shorter if at all I dont have any spare ea81 springs to compare length but i can measure the ea82 springs if you want
-
Just thought of this but my brat's original 4x4 struts have two big threaded rods on the side where you can raise and lower the spring perch if you have these lower it on down but if you hear clunking while driving over bumps you went too far and raise it back up

Axle Thread Pitch - Anyone?
Tat2Brat replied to rdweninger's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Fine thread pitch thats 1.25 isn't it or is it 1.5 but it is fine thread for sure -
And I just checked I was wrong only the top part of the ea82 springs are flat and they do sit in the original 4x4 ea81 struts I have hanging around but they are tapered so I think you just have to get the top hat part from an ea82 I dunno if FWD ea82 and the original ea81 struts will make it lower or not but they will probably go on the vehicle
-
dont take my word for it til i check but.... I got some FWD xt4 springs and some ea81 4x4 struts I could see if the bottom of the springs fit the strut but I think you might have 2 problems 1) with the top hat spring retainer piece right below the strut mount which you can put an ea82 top hat on that, I believe so that might be an easy fix 2) I'm not sure the spring perch on the strut itself is compatible because If i remember right the ea82 springs sit straight up and down when set upon the floor where the ea81 springs dont ... but then again ruparts says in the post above the ea82 struts have a stop flange so maybe they are compatible??? again just going off my not fully functional memory so no haters please

83 brat Ea81 alternator gauge?
Tat2Brat replied to Tat2Brat's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Thanks I did not know about the 90 amp nissan swap and I've had alternators rebuilt and the cost was reasonable in my opinion good info on the gauge though I am amazed my battery isn't dead yet Gonna get the alt. rebuilt soon will throw in the alt. off of my parts brat in the meantime -
the volts on my alternator gauge are all over the place the last 3 days all three days I checked twice a day and the battery has a full charge 9 volts is about the lowest i've noticed then way up toward the top of the gauge but not in the red then last night I heard a little grinding noise like a bearing when i opened the hood definetly coming from the alt. Besides the grinding noise could my gauge be on its way out? Should I have the whole alternator rebuilt? whats the proper way to test the alt. is there a way to test the voltage regulator? Dont know much about alternators so any advice helps...Thanks

New Suby! upgrade questions....
Tat2Brat replied to ennbenn72's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
ea82 engine right? well drilling it is much cheaper thats for sure and a 5 lug swap does include quite a bit of work. I'd ask yourself how long do you plan on keeping this vehicle? I've only swapped a 86 xt turbo from four to 5 lug and I if i had the chance to do on any future vehicles I will own I'd pass a bunch of money later you still have a car worth.... not a whole lot I think non turbo might be even harder to convert but maybe not one thing is the spline count on the half shafts are different from GL and GL-10
