  2. the purpous of MTBE is to reduce NOX but at the same time it reduces fuel mileage causing you to burn more fuel and therefore emiting more emissions over all. so there is a good purpous behind it but the negitivs out weigh the positives. sea foam is good stuff but it does not take the MTBE out of the gas. dont worry its been given the ax. it will be gone soon.
  3. MTBE is bad stuff. ethinol is far better. yes ethinol is bad on old rubber fuel lines. MTBE is bad for injectors and all sorts of other parts. it causes power loss compared to regular fuel. it also has a habbit of seeping into the ground watter system and making the water undrinkable and harming the fish and other kritters. the best part is I hear its a waste product that they are selling to us rather than figure out how to dispose of it properly. MTBE is being phased out here in CA finally. most other states threw the stuff out within months. CA is a little slow for some reason. if you have a 76 station there I highly recomend using it as the do not use MTBE.
  4. yeah the vin number is the real indicator of what model year a car is. production date is almost worthless. under hood sticker is better but not 100% sure.
  5. I think you guess as to the cause may be close. overheated old motor. piston got really hot expanded and scrubbed the walls of the cyl. dont think its an oil issue really. oh and if you have a set of forged pistons for an EA82 turbo. sell em those are like gold. stock turbos ran cast pistons. the real difference is the compression. you would turn the car into a slug.
  6. my dog looks like a pig kinda smells too. the bad radiator idea is worth checking too. old sube radiators(or any kind really) tend to not coolas well when they are a little pluged, fin rotted ect. I still say pressure test it. any time I have acooling system probelm I pressure test it first. takes less than 5 min.
  7. hey look whos back. you guys and your yeller plugs wires. I suppose I have slamed accel enough in the past. guess I will be quiet now. oddcomp or caleb do you have any troubleshooting info on the Saab APC stuff? I talked with caleb about it already once. Its not working properly. yeah caleb- keep working at it. I want to hear how that thing does. oh yeah save up for those elbows. you will need em eventually. silicine coolant hoses too.
  8. I agree mostly. the fouling that you may have seen is quite often due to the incorrect heat range of he bosh platnums. regular bosh plugs in a vw/bmw/audi run really well. basically it has become very clear to me that cars usually run best on the stock plug type. look at the newer dodges/jeeps. they NEED to run champion plugs to run properly. they dont last long but if you try to get tricky and put a "good" plug in them they get all up set. somtimes setting codes.
  9. I did not pull it from the doner car. but I think he said it came off a non turbo 4cyl XT. I know some/all? XTs have the electric PS pump that may be an issue. mabey some one knows XTs better than me and can chime in.
  10. xt steering racks will bolt up with little modification if I rember correctly and the have a slightly tighter steering ratio. I helped a felow board member do this swap a while back.
  11. yeah I hate to go there... but thats what it souds like to me too. needs to be pressure tested I think as well.
  12. I recomend the engine hoist. lifting motors and other large objects contributed to the crushed discs in my back. I would gladly go back in time and pay for a dolly/hoist whatever it took to save my back from the condition its in now. im only 29 and have been dealing with this condition for several years now. I wont evin carry a batery across the shop if I can use a dolly now. so after that little rant. yes you can lift an complete EA82 with two people. I too have done it. I really recomend not doing it if you can find another way.
  13. the plug wire found OFF really makes me wonder about that part. if a wire set gets bad enough it will prevent the car from running. funny coincidece about the wire off and car dieing.
  14. my 85 did not have PS on it. made it a little tricky under hard rocky wheeling at really low speed. if yours still works good I would leave it alone. If you really want to get rid of it I would suggest swaping out the rack to a non PS unit rather than run yours dry. also the pump bracket can only be removed with the intake off. not a big deal but it just seems like a lot of work to fix whats not broken. if you wheel carefull you should not break anything. not like its an H2:rolleyes: .
  15. doh.. I get it. the circles are just points of referance. well my previous statment should still help you out.
  16. the green circle is the injector resistor pack. no lines shold go to that. there is a turbo managment valve behind it. that goes to the wase gate actuator I think. the blue circle is the stupid sensor that turns on the turbo light. that line goes to a reducer then to the manifold on the right side. the line with a curl on the end comes off the pressure side of the turbo I think. for future line removal try painting or marking the lines color code style.
  17. I have a glass pack on mine as well. I hacked the stock hangers off the OE one and made a bracket to bolt it on. but then again I re did the whole system....three times. I gotta quit changing stuff.
  18. what shawn said. the bosh platnum plugs dont have the heat ranges correct. some cars they work fine others are way off. I dont trust them any more. too much money for a plug that might be better for that car.
  19. well I am out. got camping reservations for that weekend already. oh well have fun guys.
  20. make sure the pcv and crank case vents are clear. if the crankcase pressure gets too high you will have leaks all over the place. the cam housing is another suspect. I would clean it really well and remove the skid plate to inspect exactly where its coming from.
  21. The oil pick up gets in the way as well. thats why I had to lift the motor. the worst part in my opinon is removing the old gasket. they really stick on there good.
  22. SUVs are still holding strong here. oh well burn it while it lasts huh? hybrid technology is going to be great stuff for us all. should have happened years ago. I think the diesel engine is supposed to be newer than the car its swaped into but I am not positive. researched that a bit when considering droping a turbo diesel into my toyota truck. what exactly are you thinking of sheppie?
  23. nice job. glad you checked it out. dont know how it was getting by before but its good to hear all is well now.
  24. hijack rant funny KBD- if your car is a manual trans and you grabed the computer for an AT car you are going to be ok. other way around may be a problem.
  25. not sure on a sube. depends on how the system is designed. heres a little helpul info. http://www.autoshop101.com/forms/alt_bwoh.pdf
