OK so I hope this is the proper location for this thread. now that I am running the TD04 and the boost is actually controlable(no more overboost) I am curious as to what types of boost control methods people are using and what you think about it. as of now I am at stock levels and rather happy. but there is always that little bit more. I have seen the little manual boost controlers and they kind of scare me. I do have a boost gauge with an audible warning but I would really like a nice electronic boost control device that taps into the knock sensor and o2 signals. Then if you were to run lean and/or detonate it can back off the boost according to the signals recieved. not to mention that the wase gate cracking open before its needed would be eliminated. I hear you all talking about 12lbs 10lbs 14lbs. how? whatever you run how do you manage it? is your motor stock? intercooled?(what type) compression? water injected? yeah thats a bit more than just boost controlers but I think that the boost level that can be safely run is related to those other mods also.

damit I miss that little ride. well good luck with it brian. treat it well or I will come repo it. naw its yours now so beat it up all you want. it likes the abuse. yeah the car could really use a good intercooler set up. I had plans for a FMIC. but I cant go crazy on too many cars at once. my fleet has other non subes as well that need attention too.

recirc. Good I have run a few different ones. the bosh units from VWs/Saabs work well but can make noise if not plumbed properly. I hve a ford(mazda) unit that I never used also. the wrx one I have now is vented to the atmosphere and I dont like the little stumble it causes. it also cracks open a bit at cruise some times. I still run cats so I dont like that at all. plan to plumb it tonight if I can fab a flange.

thats a good fit. plumbing looks easy. I had a VW 1.8T IC before with a scoop that I made from f. glass as well. worked really well. did not fit with the TD04 though so now its in a box in the garage. dont feel bad I suck t posing pics too. calebz can back that up. I used him to help more than once.

Help installing WRX TMIC - what do I need to buy? (lot of PICS)
rallyruss replied to avatar382's topic in Subaru Retrofitting
oh... guess I shold have read the sig. oops. I think you could rotate the housing but the actuator rod would be really funky to get around the housing and mount to something. that intercooler would be sweet. hope you get it. -

the gold collored fitting will most likely go back to the idle air control valve. just follow the hose. your ford IC set up looks good as far as placement goes. you would need a bit of heat shielding over the top of the turbo. a sheet of aluminum cam make a big difference. you also could benifit from better air flow thru it. I had a bit of dificulty fitting a WRX intercooler in my engine compartment. partially due to the location of the turbo outlet. it looks like you had a solution for that. it look like yours was rotated and modified to reach the waste gate actuator. is that a wrx or legacy turbo? my WRX IC unit ended up right about where your ford unit is. my VW one I had on before was almost in the same location. I made up for this by providing plenty of air flow and using a heat shield. FMIC would be a better option than the WRX unit. espically because you have a place to put it. if you do go FMIC invest in some nice mandrel bent tubing. its not too expensive from summit or other racing sources. -
if the cartrige is the same then coolant and oil lines will be easy. I decided not to go that way because the are more scarce than the stock turbo. fuel should not be a problem at reasonable boost levels. I have not needed to change any thing on my fuel system for the TD04. but im running stock boost right now. another thing to think about. Is the intake side clockable? that would be a bonus over the TD04.

you really may be onto somthing when talking about driving style. the 22re is actually a 2.4L motor the 20r was the 2.2. thats a good deal more displacement in a motor designed to make torque. low end on the celica will always pull better. and like stated already. if you want to go faster it can be done you just need to start buying the right parts. If I could only pick two things to tell you.(Im assumeing your car is running just fine) I would say intercooler and better flowing exhaust. wont hurt the car at all but your performance will be noticably better.

ok got the plan narrowed down a bit. Yukonart- we may be able to hook up on the 31st after all. bomb up there in one shot doing the driver trade off. arive on the 30th in seattle area. snow board on the 31st? party down somewhere on new years. hang out with the cousin. put wife on plane going home. Then im all free to find other subaru freaks as I meander my way home by the 5th. -
pulling my EA82T, what should I do?
rallyruss replied to Caboobaroo's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
no if you think my shady intercooler install is bad you dont want to see my special tool. the first one I made was out of a piece of threaded rod that worked with my small slide hammer. it was ground and bent and broke quickly. good for about one job. I made a new and hopefully better one but have not had the opertunity to try it out (and hope not to for a while). the basic idea is it has a lip on the end, you slide it thru the pin, coc it to the side so the lip catches the rear of the pin and pull, slide hammer, curse at it, till it comes out. make sure the lip is not so great as to damage the piston while pulling out. I used a pin out of the motor to make the new one but its still not proven. another thought. some types of pilot bearing tools may work as well. -
I warned you it was hackery. but the hoses line up so well like that. yeah its not done. just drivable. I really need better plumbing.

rallyruss replied to a topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
oooh! you mean I might be able to see it run if I can swing by at the end of the month? the only reason I dont mess with this stuff is because I still need to pass emisions here in CA and im not so sure I could slide that one thru. -

hmm yeah. I guess I need to figure out what we will be doing for new years eve? maby I wont drink and then get the slopes all to our selvs on the first. then I can drink while boarding! yeah I wear a helmet. I ride too stupid some times not to. you know games like tring to hold the beer with out spilling all the way down the hill and other shinanigins. oddcomp- I will put you on my list.thanks, I love breakfast:) . Yukonart- or any one else who knows. where are the good spots to ride? I only know Tahoe and a few other areas. -
all stock stuff. it seems to do just fine. I am not going boost crazy yet. I need this car to last. Im tired of pulling the motor. I just noticed the cam cover on the left side is leaking. it was just resealed a short a while back when some othor work was done by the engine builder that I got it from. oh well it can wait. strut tie bar is complete but not painted yet. should provide a good place to secure the intercooler.

I agree. if you want to do all that you list you will need the lower end as well. I would look at yours before buying one off E bay. at least you know it ran when it was torn down. and dont forget the bearings when you do the rings. is this a daily driver? if so I would skip the cams. not knocking any one who runs em but I feel that the little high end you gain is not really worth the compromise. N/A cars seem to benifit more from cams than turbos do. going TD04 huh? well good luck and I hope I can help you learn from my mistakes. If you run into somthing let me know. mabey a little port matching and cleanup might help a bit. -
I see no reason why not. you would need to find a way to plumb it still but it would work. personally I would not bother with out the adition of an intercooler. yeah, oil burnin madness was one good reason why I changed it out. I thought I had the intercooler mount/stressbar complete but I miscalculated and am back to square one. grrr... stupid me.
