  1. I did mine and was not impressed and had to use premium. Its would pi ng real bad on 87 . My outback was also an auto tho and im sure that sucks up more power. I was really expecting a night and day difference and it didnt happen. Im building a 2.2 right now that will have a set of delta torque cams in it and hopefully with that and a 5 speed behind it I will be happy. You could sell me those extra heads and Intake you have and make me happy happy happy.
  2. Have been using a harbor freight 1/2 impact socket set daily for 10 years as a professional mechanic and they are still holdi g up for the most part. Good buy for 20 bucks I paid for them. Had good luck with small pick tools, pry bars, heat gun, also bought their 500lb bitch hauler and its made it to gulf shores and back without a problem. Most of the items to avoid can be seen and felt when I pick them up. Hammers are decent too. I havent bought anything large that has just totally failed me but I guess a little bit of discretion can prevent that.
  3. By law a synthetic blend oil only has to contain 30% synthetic oil so its just a marketing tool.
  4. Engine is out of the car? I would pull cam and swap shims around with another looser Intake valve and see if you can get your clearance right without havi g to buy shims. I used to do that on motorcycle engines. Find the loosest intake valve and swap with it and hopefully that will give both enough room to breathe
  5. Dealerships have a goodwill fund that allows them to repair something like this without coming out of their pocket especially considering you complained about it while it was in the warranty period service manager should be able to fix this situation for you and if he wont do it , call subaru and bomb him and his dealership on their service. Customer satisfaction index or csi is a huge deal to these guys and a bad survey will hurt them. At least it did me and my dealer when I was with audi.
  6. Most likely a bad reman if the axle nut was loose it would cause wheel bearing to whine e anbd damage bearing.we only use oem axles at my shop due to vibrations and other annoyances from the lesser axles.
  7. Both fans running? No fan can cause high pressure on both sides.
  8. I would be doing a t belt rollers changing all fluids and filters as well as alignment check . Of course I have access to an alignment rack too so thats kinda cheating. Whats the condition of the tires? A car thats been in 4 accidents may drive straight but have messed up tire wear due to bad angles or poorly made repairs.
  9. I look at condition of oil. I also look at color or the metal. If these engines sit outside after removal. The aluminum turns whitish and corroded. If you take some tools pull a valve cover and look inside and see if it looks clean or if it is all sludged up. Make sure crank spins freely with plugs out look for any signs of water sitting in the heads or around plug wells. Another indication of where its been stored at. Check t belt also if time permits. Its worth 10 minutes to pull covers and see whats goi g on in there.
  10. If its noisy and tight its ok. If the tech said it would move then you need to get it do e before it causes some damage to other parts.
  11. I have a matco (I gersoll rand ) 3/8 gun that has totally been replaced by the new dewalt 20v li ion electric impact havent touched my matco in weeks . My Ingersoll rand 1/2 titanium still gets used for the big stuff but my snap on li ion 18 v impact does the daily duties for wheels at work. The matco worked great for years when I was at audi doing wheels all day long but when I changed shops I shelved it as they kept giving me crap about it having enough torque. The newer models are stronger but im not really feeling like spending 400 bucks right now. Especially since I just bought a 300 dollar electric one. Its good to have both in both sizes but its probably overkill if you dont do this for a living.
  12. I think hes saying its a pricy gamble to throw hgs on it but if they fix it then its good. Rod bearings usually lead to a new used engine e.
  13. 650sx ! I had two of those till I went to a superjet! Wasnt expecting to see a stand up ski on a subaru forum
  14. 98 forester 96 legacy outback 99 impreza 98 jeep wrangler 09 honda crv for the lady. Really have my eye on the 67 ford f100 shortbed at my grandfather's house. Siting i. the woods begging for a 302 and a crown vic front end conversion for a tough shop truck
  15. Most of the ones I see in my area with that kind of miles still pull pretty good money and are usually modded too. Stockers command a premium but guys who spend a ton moddi g their cars also think its worth a goldmine too. The best bet is an adult owned stocker with svc records and a turbo thats already been replaced.
  16. Im starting with a short block and a set of heads so it wont be too much extra work. Just wondering if its not worth doing or if it just doesnt make as much power.
  17. Not tryi g to thread jack here but it seemed relating to the topic. Im doi g the same swap and I want to get more power at the same time. When I did a franken motor swap everybody said to get delta torque grind cams .when I see people just doi g the regular 2.2 swap no o e mentions them. Is it not a good idea to swap in the torque cams if its just a 2.2? Wont really hurt anything g but my wallet I just want to do it all while the engine is out.
  18. U scan will work with a smart phone think its about 69 dollars its decent. I used one a friend bought and other than it being slow it will clear your codes just fine. If theres not emissions testing I where you live dont worry about the code. Tons of cars around here in east Tennessee with check engine light on for that very code.
  19. I would try a rear o2 sensor. If its reading slow it will see cat as inefficient and flag a 420 code. They need to be watchi g the data streamon a scanner and make sure the rear sensor is working. Its only job is to monitor the cat.
  20. Im doing one on my car right now at work. I take the links loose from the body to get the axle out and then I knock the hub out with a brass drift and hammer. After removi g the snap ring I pulled the beari g out with a long bolt piece of steel to fit the bearing and a nut against a steel cup. Then you just reverse the process and use the long bolt and nut to push in new beari g and hub.easy and saves the tedious process of messi g with the long link bolt.
  21. I traded in my perfectlybgood snap on for a digital one and a year later I traded back to a clicker type snap on. Digital would cut out when doing hgs and batteries would go dead even tho I kept them stored outside of the tool. Get a flex head snapon and be done e with it
  22. I did this swap in my outback and wasnt impressed. Tt he auto trans sucks up too much poer to feel a difference. I did not install the delta cams or do an exhaust either so that may be part of it. I just picked up a forester yesterday and I am considering dropping the franken motor I to it after replaci g the cams with delta torque grind cams. It has a5 speed and is a lighter car so I think it will be better suited to this engine. I used the 2.5 mls hg and if I don't run premium it will ping some so my compression is a bit higher than using the appropriate cometic gasket I believe.
