  1. Yeah the plan was to take care of mom first but she's 500 miles away. I was thinking of heading that way and maybe I'd have better luck and better prices since there are tons more subarus in Colorado than there are in kansas
  2. So... I still haven't had a chance to fix the AWD issue but now I have a new problem. I'm getting a tapping noise between the engine and the transmission. At first it was only while it was in gear and it fades away once the car gets over 3 or 5 mph or so. It now makes the noise in Park also but still goes away. I'm pretty sure it's a bad torque converter. I'm kind of in a bind at this time because I've found them for between $250 and $800. I could probably afford the $200 one but then that messes up my plan to go help my mom with badly needed repairs on the family farm. My dad just passed away about a month ago so there is nobody there to help my mom finish the projects and repairs that dad started and some he never got around to. I'm not looking for free but if anyone runs across a torque converter that will fit my 98 legacy Outback please post here to let me know. Once again I'm not throwing some sob story looking for free parts. I can pay for the part. Guess I should also post in the parts section of the site
  3. Thanks for the input guys. It really helps. I'm just not use to the 4EAT and never worked on one. I'm going to dig deeper into it using the information you guys have provided and see where it goes. Thanks again
  4. no but it does come on when I insert a fuse into the socket on the firewall. I ran out to the a local lake tonight with lots of dirt roads and when I crossed a dirt intersection the front wheels just spun like a front wheel drive. I don't have much history on it since I purchased it from A guy on the internet
  5. As the title states I finished my swap in a tow away 98 subaru legacy Outback limited with automatic transmission that I got and everything seems to be good right now except it appears I'm running in FWD mode. I'm in the process of hunting down the cause. Anyone ever repair an AWD failure or is the common answer to replace it? This is my 3Rd subaru but the first with an automatic transmission and let me tell you I'm not impressed.
  6. So... I got my header today at lunch time. It bolted right up and I'm now in the process of coming up with some heat shields. My salvage yard 2.2 is running very well and after I replace a few hoses and the radiator we will be taking our first journey together. We will then find out what if anything else needs done
  7. Harbor freight sells a set of like five sizes in a set and it has the one that fits and the one to get you out of that jam really cheap
  8. Good to hear it worked out well. At this point the lack of heat shield is the least of my worries. If it becomes an issue I'll consider just wrapping the pipes
  9. Thank you very much for that. Don't know how I didn't find that because I did check eBay. Thanks again. You are awesome
  10. I thought I'd drop in and say hi to everyone. My name is Andrew and I haven't been active for quite some time. But I want to thank everyone for the information you share and have shared in the past. I still have my legacy wagon and it still runs great except for the need to replace the main shift bearings in the 5Mt. It is currently parked in Colorado at the family farm and due to vandalism and some minor sabotage (that's all I got in the divorce) I haven't been able to bring her home yet but I haven't given up on her yet. I recently got a 98 OB limited at a great price with a seized engine and I'm almost finished with my 2.2 swap. Considering the fact that I almost forgot how much I love working on these cars I think I will sell it when I'm finished and buy another to restore and do the same. Thanks again to all that contribute here. You've taught me everything I know about subaru
  11. Any suggestions on where I might find a single port Y pipe for my Ej22 swap? I purchased a 98 legacy Outback limited with a seized motor for a steal and I've acquired and installed an EJ22. Almost finished except for my exhaust and figuring out some of my vacuum lune issues. I remember reading awhile back about someone that made conversion pipes to be clamped or welded to the EJ25 pipe after chopping the flange off. Is this guy still around? Any input at this point would be great. Thanks in advance
  12. After the required 24 hr cure time for the gasket material I then added my gear oil then checked for leaks and test drove . I'm happy to report that what sounded like worn brakes when in motion is gone! Feels like driving a new car.
  13. Just got this part taken care of today. These bearings listed on a dealer site in CT for $97 so I checked the local dealer web site and the came out to $144. So I called the dealer and asked for a quote on these parts. I was quoted $188. I was blown away! why the drastic price difference ? I don't usually try yo haggle too much but I found $188 from $97 to be a bit steep. So I brought it to the attention of the parts guy and he re-quoted my $117 . Thanks again Subaru parts guy !! As an added note ; My $60 dollar shop press payed for itself today !! worth every dime !
  14. As the title states My latest obsession is my 1996 Subaru Legacy L wagon . It replaces my old white 95 Subaru that was taken at an early age (about 267,000 miles). The insurance company only gave me about $2100 for it and I found this old beat up thing on one of the listing sites and went to check it out. For starters it didn't start when i went to look at it so $1600 was WAY out of the question. It appeared that it was used for a dog house. I then asked what it would take to save her from the scrap yard and was told $500 . SCORE ! after i started and ran it on starting fluid anyway. I towed it home and the troubleshooting began. FUEL PUMP and she was running !! Now the real troubleshooting and repairs began. This was March of last year and I spent most of last summer on the road for work so there wasn't too much time for repairs so if you are wondering ; No it didn't take a year. The repair list to date is as follows; Battery Left and right front CV axles Fuel pump upstream O2 sensor Timing belt kit with tensor , pulleys and water pump front engine main seal and cam seals spark plugs and wires clutch , pressure plate, Pilot bearing, release bearing and clutch fork retainer clips replaced 4 bad hydraulic lash adjusters front and rear downstream CAT gaskets reverse light switch center differential output seal All 4 bearings in center differential valve cover gaskets front windshield washer pump Replaced all PCV plumbing Replaced all vacuum lines Front and rear brake rotors and pads Replaced knock sensor EDIT : Replaced front left and right wheel bearings She is supposed to have 168,000 on her but I'm not real sure as I had an issue with the odometer and I thought it had been tampered with and after closer examination it must have gotten something in it and the guide axle (don't know the proper name) had popped from its keeper. After resetting it in it's place my odometer works fine again but not before i purchased on on thE bay. I'm sure I don't articulate my thoughts well at times and my grammar, spelling and punctuation leave a lot to be desired but I wanted to share and say thanks to everyone that has posted on this site. Without you I would most likely have junked this thing myself. Thanks again. Each and every one I
  15. That is what i dream of doing to mine. For now just getting it ready for the road has been a chore
  16. Also I might add (judging solely by post count) you likely have already read on this forum that if you are going to do one you might as well do it all. I just did a full clutch job on my Subaru over a throw out bearing and after pressing out the old pilot bearing i was very glad i did. Pressure plate had some abnormal wear also but the clutch disk still had some of the slots left on it . As hard as that stuff is to get to it is best to replace it all while you are in there. Then if the gods of good karma smile upon you it will be a long time before you have to go back inside. P.S. Don't skimp out and not replace the little clips that retain the throw out bearing. $5.00 and it is the weakest link in your clutch system
  17. I know I am the new guy here but it sounds to me like you already figured it out. When the clutch is pressed the throw out bearing is pressed up against the little springy fingers of your pressure plate and it is spinning at current engine RPM. The pilot bearing on the other hand is pressed into the middle of your flywheel and is spinning at current engine RPM all the time. If the noise is consistent my money is on pilot bearing but since it only screams with the clutch pressed my money is on throw out bearing. Have a great day and good luck
  18. Well thanks to everyone that chimed in. I had my hands at 9 and 3 . I did make it out a lot better than i would have without airbags and i am a pretty tall person so sitting too close to the airbag I don't even think is possible . anyhow just wanted to see what a few of you thought. Thanks
  19. Tranny to swap now or forever pick up the pieces

  20. Just wanted to pose the question and honestly it never crossed my mind until about 3 weeks ago. Driver turned in front of me and totaled out my 95 legacy outback. Driver side bag held up pretty good but the burns on my hand from the airbag vents hurt really bad. Even had skin rolling off my knuckles. Anyhow, Thoughts ? comments ?
  21. WooHoo! go midwest !! I'm new here too. Welcome
  22. Hi like this sight a lot and want to thank everyone that contributes and makes it all work. My first Subaru was a 1995 legacy wagon. Loved that car. We were passing it around my family with a goal of 500k miles but it's life with me was cut short by some dude just trying to hurry up and get home so he could get a drink (his words not mine). She only had 210,000 on her. You know insurance company's don't pay near what it really takes to replace a car. but i was able to score a 1996 Subaru Legacy L for $500 since he could not even start it (fuel pump) but he dragged it home on a tow truck without removing the drive shaft and blah blah blah. I will fill in the details in further threads. Thanks again for everyone that loves to keep these things alive
