Hi folks, long time, no visit from me. A friend has an 01 no turbo impreza with a p0301 code. The engine has about 20k on it since complete rebuild and until yesterday has been perfect. I know it's a cylinder 1 misfire, just trying to give him some advice for fixing it as he is to far away. The car runs fine at freeway speeds but when you slow down to a stop it almost dies. He swapped plug wires and plugs, but no change. Compression is 150 on #1. Any ideas would be great, and by the way, hes not very mechanical and hes nowhere near somewhere to take it to get checked. I though forester 2.5 was the same from 99 to 04 or 05.

Will a 2.5 motor from a forester work in the 05 impreza. The impreza has a 2.5 non turbo with bad rod knock and I have the forester motor already. Thanks Dp

I am about to do the VC on a 02 wrx. It looks pretty straight forward, but are there any little odd things I may run into? Like any o rings or seals to change. Also for the housing coming off, should I use a new gasket, or is it like the tranny pan and use a good sealer? Any advise would help. Thanks Dp

I have a 99 outback with a 93 2.2 motor in it. For 2 years now it in as has no problems at all. Now it has start in ng issues sometimes. You turn the key to start it and nothing. No click or anything. I replaced the starter with a napa starter and it was good for a couple months, it it did it again today. I didn't think to try starting it in neutral last time, but today I tried it and it started right up. It's an auto tranny. Am I looking at a neutral safety switch and if so, where is it located? Having an odd electrical problem. Low beams don't work, but high beams do. Going to check bulbs tomorrow. The odd part is when I turn the lights on the dash lights go out, but if I turn the lights off the dash lights work. Any ideas where to start would be great. Thanks Dp

Asin timing belt kit from Amazon has good quality parts and is pretty cheap. Japanese bearings and belt and it comes with the water pump. Head gaskets per above.

What year did subaru start using the updated head gaskets in the 2.5 outback. And are they really less prone to the d gaskets issues.

My sister recently bought a 2010 outback. Today after a quick rinse with a pressure washer, they started it and noticed a bunch of stuff wasn't working. The radio, heated seats, computer display and a few other things. They stopped to get some fuses and when they started it again, everything worked. Any idea what might have caused that. Thanks

I've done a couple of those swaps and I have ordered the timing kit for an 2.5 and it works perfect. So your stuff will work. As for power loss, a bit, but not enough to be really disappointed.

No. That's not cca. If the battery is old and week, or low on water, your volts might be low. Have you had the battery and alternator tested?

I can't tell how old the battery is, but it looks like an interstate from Costco. That's where I get mine. $75.00 with a core. Get the group 35 and look at the cca. The higher the better.

Try and tighten the the fuel lines. And definitely get it to a different mechanic. Whoever looked at it is pretty much an idiot. It should be fine for the drive home, where you can take it to your mechanic.

As for fixing the lights, did they cut the wires right at the connectors? If not and there is enough wire, just splice them back together

Even with those lights out, you should be able to scan it still and pull codes

I dont think the plug wires go through the covers until 99. 90 - 95 have dual port exhaust and are non interference. 96 has single port exhaust and is non interference. 97 and 98 are single port interference. 99 is a phase 2 and has the plug wires through the covers. The only way I can tell 96 from 97 or 98 is by pulling a valve cover. 96 and earlier have no valve adjustments, they are hydraulic. 97 and 98 have adjustable valves. Those 2 years are virtually identical motors.
