  1. Do NOT coat it. Buy good gaskets. I have had good luck with 6 star head gaskets, but they are expensive
  2. Sounds like the 99 heads are 2.2 phase 2 heads and I dont think those would work anyways. I could be wrong though
  3. Yes it is for the windshield. I had to look really close on my 99 outback to see the element in the bottom 3 inches. It was almost unseeable, but it was there. If it isn't, then yes, you would have to replace the windshield. I had one done in a 99 outback and it was $280 then yesterday I had one done in a 2000 outback at the same shop and it was $230.
  4. The red fluid dripping from the cradle might actually be from the steering rack. For the shifting, do you always driving in 4th? I don't use 4th until I'm over 45. If I drive mine in 4th all the time it shifts a little weird. 4th is almost like overdrive
  5. Have you replaced the sway bar end links? That has been the most common thing I have found to cause noise when hitting bumps. If the rubber looks weathered and cracked, replace them.
  6. I have to replace the rear bumper on a 2000 outback. Around the wheel wells is a thin black trim piece and it goes all the way to the bumper. Is there a good glue to reattach that after I do the bumper. Thanks
  7. Before I got a nice compressor I bought an electric impact. Best thing I bought. I used it quite a bit working on subys. I got a half inch impact from Lowe's for about $100 and have had it for years and still use it a lot.
  8. It depends on what year car your working on. The phase 2 motors starting in 99 had 2 more bolts on each side. If it's a phase 1 motor in a 98 or earlier, then your fine. That is if you removed the exhaust bolts and the 2 engine mount bolts on the bottom
  9. 95 was a total change for Subarus from the 94. They probably dropped a lot of body weight in the new design. I think the tranny and suspension were changed a bit also. So 200lbs from a 2800lb car isn't really a lot
  10. When i put the auto tranny and rear end from a 97 legacy into my 97 outback, do I need to change the TCU also
  11. Impact driver for the bolt and then hit the housing the ball joint go into with a big hammer. Hit it on the side right where the ball joint goes in. I have done this a few times and it pops right out. Might have to hit it a few times.
  12. It's a pretty easy replacement. I have found some struts at a yard that were in good shape. Spray the bottom bolts with some good penetrating spray and you should be fine. Might need a breaker bar to get them loose.
  13. I agree with the 2.2 and you can actually use one from a 1990 to 1994 legacy also. Just need a 95+ 2.2 intake and an easy egr work around.
  14. If your in Washington, we are selling a 2000 outback with 150k on it. Head gaskets done at 110k, and I am going to install new timing kit this week and reseal the complete motor. It's a great car, but she wants the very nice 98 Gt I am working on. Just a thought. By the way, asking price it $4300
  15. If it was just a lite high, it has probably done no damage, and probably my not the reason for oil in the tubes. It probably needs new tube seals and you should do the valve cover gaskets also since you have to remove them to do the seals. As for how hard, I'm not positive, but after 06, getting the valve covers off with the engine in the car isn't fun. Hopefully someone will verify, but I think you have to raise the engine aittle to get the drivers side off. Again, I'm not positive.
  16. I think I figured it out. The thermostat housing is missing. I think the other line goes to that
  17. I have a 99 Forester engine that I want to put into a 2000 outback. Only thing I'm not sure of is the oil filter on the Forester motor. It has a big adapter with a couple hoses running to it, where the outback doesn't. Looks like I can just pull the adapter, but 1 hose goes right into the block. Any ideas what to do
  18. If you are a fan of the older outback, like me, I have replaced the dual cam 2.5 with the 2.2 from anywhere from 1990 - 1995. I have done about 15 of them and everyone has been very happy with them. The early 2.2 is non interference and has the dual port heads so you don't have to change the y pipe. I currently have a 97 outback with a 93 2.2 in it and it has entry of power. It's an easy swap and with a 95 - 98 2.2 intake, it's pretty much if and play. Just my 2 cents
  19. Everything looked good, so I picked picked up the 99 head gaskets today. They are thicker than the 2000 gaskets, so I am pulling the motor in the morning and going to try and do the head gaskets and have it running again by hopefully 2 or 3 tomorrow. I will update with the outcome when I get done. Thanks
  20. My fear is, if the valves are making contact, even though the motor runs good, are the valves probably damaged? It has about 20 miles run time on it
