Larry, how thick are the cosmetic gaskets you have? I am interested in at least 1 set. -

Do the pistons in the early 2.5 blocks come up over the deck? -

Both motors had new timing everything done with 2 bolt tensioners. -
I am thinking about building a engine stand to test engines. I like to replace 2.5 dbl cam motors with 2.2 motors and putting a motor in a car without hearing it run isn't good. Hence my 98 Gt woes. I have a wrecked 97 legacy and the thought is to cut it up and use the pertinent things, like the wiring and subframe and gas tank. Build a steel stand on wheels to attach the sub frame to and fuel tank, shorten the fuel lines and coil up excess wiring, and mount a battery. Would this work as easily as it sounds in my head????, or am I missing something?

2.2 motors are very easy to do. I have used 6 star head gaskets but they are pretty expensive, about $120 a pair, but they are very good. I have recently used the felpro permaflex gaskets. They seem good and reviews were good, but they have only been in for about a month so I can't say yet how they hold up. As for the work to be done, a store bought manual works pretty good. The important part is having the head surface prepped correctly, and the block. And also the torque sequence is important. If I can figure out how to attach a photo, I will post the sequence for you.

Not having fun with this one. The 2.5 was bad so I picked up a 2.2 for it. Rolled the dice and lost. Motor was supposed to be good and from a wrecked car. Put it in and bad rod knock. Then, being not very happy, I grabbed some parts I had laying around, a good 2.5 block and some good 2.2 heads and threw them together with new everything. Put it in and now it sounds like #4 slight rod knock. Pulling everything apart today to hopefully install a good 2.2 I am going to go look at and hear run.

Should be the same as the old Subaru's. 2 nuts accessed from underneath. They are on the studs that go through the front subframe, 1 on each side of the steering rack
