  1. http://www.thecarconnection.com/index.asp?n=178&sid=178&article=7368 http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=26182 I believe this is what you are looking for... the good, the bad and the UGLY. Apparently everyone rips off... er borrows each other's work. You say Murano I say Tribeca... This site was posted last week at USMB at second link by Photo2001 so let him go to jail (Please read my signature at bottom of page).
  2. Like Frag said, they do need to be serviced. I checked mine after 6 years and it was WAY low so I added distilled water. I guess I could use a hygrometer (?) and add some acid and get it back in the pinkl
  3. " looks a little like the Nissan Murano"... yeah... ugly ain't it and it's already been done!
  4. http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/problems/tsb/tsbsearch.cfm The above FREE site is the National Highway Safety site. In addition to Safety Recalls this site lets you access Technical Service Bulletins (TSB) which are heads ups from car manufactureres to their dealerships and mechanics related to common problems. While some of these problems are innocuous, others can be a pain or at least points of negotiations if you notice them on the car you are buying. New cars have problems that are usually discovered under warranty, yours will likely not be warrantied. Check the CV boots... the list goes on... You know, unless you are a good mechanic you should take the checklist to a reputable mechanic and let him do an inspection of the car and highlighting the issues presented here. When all else fails, I generally use my great mechanical prowess and buy the white car! Good luck.
  5. Yo... "dangerous to everyone on the road".... how about your own vapor trail and air turbulence as you pass us at 100mph!
  6. Check the search function on this site. I remember reading something about faulty knock sensors with cracks in the casings (?). Is your sensor code related to damp weather conditions?
  7. Update on second remanufactured auto tranny installed under extended warranty, 2000 Legacy GT. First reman. went in at 41K for reasons of delayed engagement. 28K later developed clicking noise in P and N and a whining in the 40-50mph range and SOA installed another reman. yesterday. Picked up the car and after 5 minutes CEL. Tech replaces rear O2 sensor under warranty and says they have a lot of problems with O2 sensors, front and back. BTW, I had just refilled the gas tank after near empty following full tank with 11 oz. BG44K engine treatment. Any probable cause there or just coincidence? Car now also has an odd rattle in front of passenger compartment not related to road conditions. Tech at first thought noise more electrical than mechanical possibly related to faulty DRL relay as they seem to be a problem?? news to me but bookmark for further reference. Turned on driving lights to interupt DRL but sound continued. I left the car and am still driving the loaner (a rather spritely 04 Forrester... Note to self: never buy car that has been used as a loaner). They also somehow tore the vinyl on the driver's door (**** happens) but will be replacing it too. At this rate I'll soon have to schedule appointments for maintenance on the loaner car. Any thoughts about probable cause other than the old parking switch error or demonic possession?
  8. Just had it done on my 2000GT cuz I didn't feel like getting down and dirty that day ($18 labor). I watched the guy remove the plugs in the sequence described above and use the Penzoil gear oil I supplied in quart squeeze bottles with tapered tops that he just squeezed in until excess ran out. Turns out the rear diff takes .8 Qt. and the front Automatic diff takes 1.3 Qt. so with what was left around the gears, it was an even 2 Qts.. Note: I was watching him fill the front diff through the fill tube when my eye caught a large piece of the aluminum/cardboard cap liner swirling down into the funnel and fortunately I was able to scoop it out! As the say... it ain't rocket surgery, ya know!
  9. The wife didn't really appreaciate my "TADA" when demonstrating the fix... Doesn't she understand that items completed on the "To Do" list are immediately transferred to the "Ta Da" column?
  10. http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/problems/tsb/tsbsearch.cfm The above site is for TSBs for cars by make, model and year. I guess the best thing to do is complain about every issue on the list and get it on your service record before your warranty expires and then you are covered when the inevitable occurs. You can also roam around this site for safety recalls but you would have been notified of these by SOA.
  11. I am on my 4th Sub. 84-90-2000-2005 My 2000 Legacy GT handles great even compared to my wife's 05 Legacy OB iLtd. This week I am getting my 2nd reman AT installed on the 2000. Can you post, email me or PM and tell me what were the reasons for twice replacing your transmission. I am still covered under the Gold Plus plan but will soon expire. BTW, there is a site (see below) where you can find a listing of the TSB's on your particular car. That can give you a heads up on potential problems while still under warranty. The same site lists safety recalls but the TSBs cover non safety related issues that SOA has encountered enough to clue their mechanics in to fixes. The TSBs are only in synopsis form but you can get a sense of the scope and number of issues. I have noticed problems on my car that I dealt with myself only to discover through the TSB site that this was a known issue that the dealer could have fixed if only I had complained (ie loose weatherstripping, sunroof problems). Still, for the price, the package seems worthwhile. Yes the good old days were different but... in my area, the 80s and early 90s cars have been reduced to rust dust by this time. http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/problems/tsb/tsbsearch.cfm
  12. What's a reasonable price for a clutch job on a 93 Legacy? It seems to have begun slipping in 5th gear (worn clutch?) and there is a tweeting noise in neutral that goes away if I slightly engage the clutch (throwout bearing?)... or is there a liquid additive that will cure these ills? Clutchrenew... Tweetnomore?
  13. I had the same issue with my 2000 Legacy GT. From the outside, open the door and stand on the doorsill with the moonroof open so you can see what's going on. In my case, the back moonroof shade had jumped the track similar to what you describe where the window would drag it back when opening the window. Examine both sides and you should be able to determine which one rides smoothly in the track and then try and gently reposition the misguided side. Then run around the yard yelling TADA! There is a Technical Service Bulletin: http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/problems/tsb/results.cfm Make : SUBARU Model : LEGACY Year : 2000 Manufacturer : SUBARU OF AMERICA, INC. Service Bulletin Num : 128003 Date of Bulletin: MAY 19, 2003 NHTSA Item Number: 10001727 Component: VISIBILITY:SUN ROOF ASSEMBLY Summary: SUNSHADE FOR REAR SUNROOF ON DUAL SUNROOF MODELS. The following website is specific to your car's TSBs but doesn't mention this condition. Check out the other issues. These are not NHTSA safety recalls but rather SOA heads up bulletins for their dealerships. http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/problems/tsb/results.cfm It's easy finding your way when you know where you are going!
  14. I've heard that it starts out innocently enough with soldering and then its a slippery slope into the dark (you have to wear those goggles) world of welding. Avoid the temptation to start and "stick" with duct tape.
  15. If the toe and camber was done appropriately and alignment is on and especially since the problem followed the move of the tires, I would suspect something amiss with the tire that brought the problem with the swap. You could move the tire to the rear but then you don't know that the rear tire you bring forward is balanced. $40 to balance all 4 tires and when they are on the machine (or even just balance the one tire that brought the problem along when you moved it), the tech can tell you if you have a bent rim or even a defective tire. Put the 2 best tires/rims on the front and let us know. 10K is too soon to replace a tire unless defective and if it is defective, you should be able to get an adjustment from the seller.
  16. Just got back from the hardware store and it seems like Silicone spray (by Gunk) would do the trick for the rubber and white lithium grease for parts metal. Any objections?
  17. If my memory serves me, the Outback 2.5i Ltd is equipped with a LSD as well as side airbags (I know, the airbags haven't tested well in gov't assessment) and I kinda liked the bigger hips on the OB (NOT my preference in women though). Seems like I might try the rear sway bar upgrade and see what gives for my first tire replacement.
  18. The automatic window doesn't want to close the last inch or so without a little tug on the glass. Is this a case of the motor on its last legs?
  19. So it looks like I'm off to sway bar land. Where do I buy them and is installation a DIY project? Any special tools?
  20. Hey Doc, We already owned a 2000GT and didn't want to appear that we were running a fleet service out of the house. More important, I hate the hood scoop "boy racer" look, added maintenance and the high test fuel requirement of the turbo. I know that they actually made the hood scoop functional this year but it's still not for me. The feeling of driving the OB is much less adherent on turns and that's why I question the height of the car. Could different tires enhance road huggability?
  21. Travelling in a snow storm it seemed like suddenly there was little power going to the drive. 93 Legacy manual transmission. Shifted down from 5th to 4th gear and it seems to have grabbed, shift back to 5th and it seemed to go for a while and then the same thing happened again. It wasn't apparent uinder dry conditions. Pardon the lack of clarity but I wasn't in the car when it happened. There is a little tweeting probably from the throwout bearing that you can hear at idle and disappears if you just slightly engage the clutch. I'm hoping for a "Tweet No More" additive to pour on the hood of the car and that it may also solve the mystery in the drive. Any other suggestions appreciated.
