  1. Mine was done by a Subie tech and they did not remove the engine. The 15-17 range seems reasonable. As mentioned your vintage leaks oil. As long as you watch your fluids, you might want to wait for the timing belt change interval (105K miles) as they will be halfway into the engine at that point.
  2. The 08 typically has an external HG leak. I waited for my timing belt service interval (105K miles) and had the hgs replaced at that time. They were leaking but not horrendous yet. Keep an eye on your fluids while you search. I learned my lesson after my 05 started leaking just AFTER the TB was changed. At 186K miles, it is leaking oil so badly that I could lease it out to reseal driveways. Sorry, I don't have any recommendations for a local mechanic.I'm sure some neighbors will chime in. There are way too many posts regarding HG issues to mention. Use the search function and check the various forums including the repair manual. I know there are variety of youtube videos on HG replacements. A quick search of the Repair Manual forum on this site doesn't highlight HGs. I may have missed it under "engine" but perhaps your observation is valid in this regard. The USMB is a wealth of information and friendly members. I am mostly an armchair mechanic but a frequent flyer (and beggar of information) on the site. Just yesterday, a top poster described the year that Subaru of America modified their choice of HG material. Based on site recommendations, I opted for the turbo HG when having my 08 done. It seems that subsequently, SOA also changed their HG material to reflect this choice.
  3. 08 OB auto wheel bearing at 95k changed leaking HG at timing interval 105K miles an occasional p0420
  4. Closest yard has one with 80K (?) miles on it at least that's what the junkyard dog barked at the salesman ;-) They want $250 for it but the salesman said it has a little "catch" in the rotation "all Subarus do" hmmmm. Its also an hours drive each way. RockAuto is lately getting some horrible reviews i.e. NO LONGER HAVE ANY LIVE CUSTOMER SERVICE. Yikes!! Probably go for the cheapo from Parts Geeks and give it a go.
  5. 05 Outback Auto 4cyl 189K miles Rumbling has gotten real bad when driving and rapping mid car when taking off. Seems like the center bearing on this non-serviceable drive shaft is shot. (Diagnosed by Subie tech while in for my free oil change) Parts Geeks has a remanufactured shaft by A1Cardone for $260 or Rock Auto has new Dorman for $360. Any thoughts?
  6. yup cny that silverado ujoint sounds about right anyone every tap in a grease fitting for that center bearing i have been told by local shops that the drive shaft isn't serviceable...
  7. what video? i see there is a swf file that neither my windows or linux computer wants to open...
  8. if it is that center bearing (not the standard u-joint), has anyone tried tapping in a grease fitting? Is there room within the bearing housing for such a move?
  9. 2005 OB auto Noticed past few weeks, only in reverse. Seems to be coming from mid car and not wheels. Universal joint? Are they serviceable on this model/year?
  10. As was asked before, any symptoms before recent work. Any chance clogged cat? Disconnect cat and see if any better. It will be louder for sure :-)
  11. http://www.subaruoutback.org/forums/80-electrical-electronics/23909-08-o-b-radio-hvac-control-lighting-prob-6.html post 55 shows arced area on faceplate/unit contact area circled in red in attached imageother posts early on speak of weak solder joints but this poor contact beneath the faceplate seems to be my issue since merely tapping on the faceplate can at times rectify the issue.
  12. ++ John's reply above. I had intermittent cutout on my 05 and pressing the faceplate in that area seems to rectify. Apparently from my googling, someone discovered that there is a passive grounding point that develops carbon between the little metal arm and the faceplate. If you decide to explore you will see the area. I will try and find a link.
  13. I did just that on my 08 at the tb change at 105K miles. In truth, it had overheated once due to coolant leak from lower radiator hose but this was my intention anyways. My 05 started with hg leaks about 10K after the tb change so I considered the HG change a matter of maintenance. Now , barely 5K miles later, I am getting the damn P0420 code on the 08 just as I did on the 05. I am not going to waste time tracking this down again. I will just reset the code before inspection every other year since I don't use cruise control which becomes inactive when check engine light is on.
  14. https://slickdeals.net/f/11243923-subaru-25-00-test-drive-offer?v=1 I did this a few months ago. I still love my 05 and 08 Man those new cars are nice though!
  15. Subaru techs refer to this as the battery kill switch as it kills many a battery!
  16. Saw this on a deal site link and discussion. I don't have any of this new fangled stuff on my 05 or 08... Mods please move to where appropriate if misplaced here.
  17. are you losing any antifreeze fluid. My 08 had a leaking lower radiator hose that went unnoticed until I overheated (twice) simple things first
