  1. when did you first notice the sound? the connectors Tex speaks of would need to be intentionally connected, not a sudden random occurrence. if temporally related to the cabin filter installation, is there a chance any large piece of debris was introduced into the vent stream so as to partially block the switching mechanism?
  2. OK this sounds familiar. On my 05 Legacy Outback, there is occasionally a sound that is the motor that controls the vent position struggling. Apparently this tired little motor is a common problem but not one I feel like taking the car half apart to get to. When you hear the noise, try switching the "mode" of the air circulation including the foot/window/body direction as well as fresh air intake. It usually gets enough momentum after switching it around to stop the damn sound. At first I thought it was a CD that was stuck and trying to play. Hey, you never know... in your case it may be a stuck CD. Now that I am thinking about it, it hasn't been happening lately in the colder weather here in CT.
  3. So easy to check and stop all of the what ifs. Unless the op is colorblind (in which case, my apologies) Open hood Look down at where the axle meets the transmission. Is the color of the can at that attachment point (size of a large oil filter) Green?? If it is not green, that is your diagnostic test. Close hood. No need to wash hands. Order OEM or reman Subaru axle.
  4. Just had the same thing on my 05. As stated above, just a splash of brake fluid did the trick. There was no visible signs of leaks and the pads were only half worn.
  5. time for a new broker shop around if you own your home, bundle with homeowners for even better rates try state farm insurance
  6. I am beggin' can't we just start a sticky wiki and identify the belts/kits/water pumps that have the best track record?? Even for those who don't do their own work it would be great to be an informed consumer and possibly politely up-educate a mechanic or two I do appreciate threads such as these but unless you follow every day (have no life like me) you might miss this very important PSA.
  7. Are the turbo HGs still the best choice for replacement or is there a newer thought? I always thought the recommendation was Subaru only TBs?
  8. STICKY REQUEST: Have the same question. Don't mean to hijack this thread but my 05 and 08 Outbacks are also due for TB. The 05 is showing signs of external HG leaks so it appears that HGs (turbo gaskets or are the new gen OK?) should be considered part of scheduled maintenance as well for this (and other) years? Perhaps a sticky on member's experience with various kits? I recall reading that some were recently disappointed to discover that certain parts in reputable and previously reliable supplier kits were changed with barely an apology other than an RMA offer which may come too late for those who have already begun disassembly.
  9. 2008 OB 86K miles. Wife reported that she had just pulled into a parking lot after waiting in a long line. 10 minutes before stopping the car noticed no hot air from heater. Idling in lot noticed temp gauge was just below red. Turned off car and smelled the antifreeze. Opened hood and noticed leaking coolant but didn't identify source just that it was wet below the area of the overflow tank. Waited 10 minutes for cool down. A good samaritan opened the radiator and said there was no water. Added only 1/2 gallon and started the car. Temp remained at mid point. Still no hot air. A minuite into the drive home, temp hit the red mark, she pulled over to the side, let it idle and the temp came back down and hot air was now blowing. Drove 1/2 hour home at hwy speeds and no further issues. It appears that there is a green crusty residue at the point where the lower radiator hose joins the engine. Could this be just a low coolant issue or should I be looking elsewhere? Replace the hose and call it a day? Do I need to flush the coolant and refill?
  10. worth a vacation/drive to California? hang out at the beach until repaired then head on home ;-)
  11. isn't there a federal warranty of some sort on exhaust/emissions parts beyond the 5 year 60K mile warranty?? there may be a recall? check with SOA
  12. 05 OB has had the 0420 for the last 60K miles. I changed both O2 sensors and then called it a day. I went through the whole workup with Cardoc and was determined to be a bad cat. Gas mileage is fine. I live in an emissions state. Bought a cheap Autel $20 code reader and I clear the code and allow the systems to reset then scoot over for the emissions test and I'm good for another 2 years. Eastern Catalytics sells some cheap cats. Probably only last a few years as the cost is a function of how much precious metal is in the cat. So, if you need to sell, try this bandage and leave no forwarding address.
  13. Well, thanks to my 08 with TPS I was alerted to the fact that the cold was wreaking havoc on my tire pressure. Checked the 05 (no TPS) and found was also suffering from cold symptoms. If you are prone to forgetfulness or "oldtimers disease" check your tire pressure if you haven't already.
  14. You didn't say whether the recent squeaking is affected by tapping the brakes. Had squeaking from what I thought was the brake pad wear indicators tweeting against the rotor. Turned out that when I went to replace what I thought was worn brake pads, the pads still had plenty of meat on them. The pads had a bunch of rust and crud on the tabs and caused the pads to get hung up. Filed the tabs down so the pads moved freely and noise is gone.
  15. Try a little mom and pop store like Walmart Link Or pretty much any hardware store
  16. still expect external hg leaks as on my 05 outback. Not nasty internal leak mixing oil with coolant, it just seeps oil externally, so do hgs at next tb interval using turbo gaskets as recommended on usmb..
  17. https://www.cars.com/articles/2011-15-subaru-oil-consumption-update-1420683845519/ There is a class action lawsuit and settlement regarding excess oil consumption including extending warranty to 100K miles. Looks like your 2014 Forrester may be included.
  18. did you try switching the pads side to side? if the problem travels with the switch, then the problem is with the pad.
  19. Yup, thanks to board responses in the past, I discovered this short term "fix". Traveled with a 1.5' of copper pipe that would reach down to the starter and a hammer. Wife was at the key as I tapped on the starter. Eventually replaced the starter.
  20. Never got the check engine code on my 08 but, according to the Great Oracle Google, this appears a somewhat common issue from 02 to 2013 Oct 6 Japan's Fuji Heavy Industries said on Thursday it was recalling about 100,000 of its Subaru-branded vehicles in Japan to fix a problem with an air pump switch located in the main fuse box. The recall covers models including the Legacy and Imprezza, along with XC and Forrester crossover SUVs produced in 2006-2013. The Japanese automaker said it was also planning to recall models overseas, but declined to give further details.
  21. Happy endings! And seems your daughter was probably a witness to the transaction and then the extraction from the picture enclosed. All good life lessons.
