  1. Pun intended? While yours seems to be an interesting case requiring careful and critical diagnosis, I have all too often witnessed service managers up-selling services (read preying) with caveats like "well, lil lady, you really should replace your (barely worn) brakes, blinker fluid etc. as I see you have children in the car"!
  2. Was there a different code for knock sensor? P0420 code (at least on my 05) says nothing about knock sensor. It is an intermittent code as well. Would this be consistent with your findings? PS where is the knock sensor? Ivan Imports: I already replaced the bank 1 front O2 sensor and within minutes threw 0420 again. I thought this odd since the car was driven only 2 cycles... but then again it goes off (without my resetting) for a while before returning.
  3. loose heat shield? or is sound louder? pound on exhaust, see if there is any sound,
  4. Are these manuals or auto trans? 00 automatics have the delayed engagement on the transmissions otherwise if the hg are done, excellent car.
  5. Nope, Subaru Outback! Video and story below: http://www.wtip.org/drupal/content/west-end-news-june-30
  6. Records indicate under 36K warranty SOA replaced the unit as lights went out on both hvac and radio. Seems like your problem is different.
  7. The lights to the combined stereo/hvac unit on my 05 cut out a few times but as I recall, at restart of the car, came back on. Hasn't happened in a while but I remember mention of a questionable connector at the back of the unit. Never had to get that deep into it myself but try re-seating the power connector. Are your HVAC lights working? I can't recall if my stereo worked without the display lights but it would certainly make channel surfing difficult but not impossible. I will check my warranty service records to see what if anything was done by the dealer if it was within the warranty time period. I know I never paid out of pocket for any repair.
  8. Thanks JCE for the heads up on http://opposedforces.com/parts/ Great drill down search for things subie.
  9. If it is the part that extends laterally from the cover itself AND you have the part, try drilling a small hole in each part, insert a nail to stabilize and give support and glue it back together. It is under a fair amount of stress from the spring though. If you don't have that part that broke off, the whole thing looks like a rather small piece that is screwed in from the underside on the corner of the cover? Shouldn't really cost that much (considering the time you'll spend with the arts and craft project) and likely last a lot longer. Scenario: You rig this thing with duct tape and crazy glue and all seems fine. Then you are driving down the road when the spring overcomes the poorly engineered repair and lets go with a sudden loud and startling snap. At that very moment, you are approaching an intersection and distracted by the noise and the recoil of the cover that has hit you in the back of the head, you end up in a serious accident. Hospitalized, you too late realize that you don't have health insurance and the cost of your recuperation bankrupts you. You lose your house AND the dog house behind it! The dog is so pissed off that he is no longer your best friend! So ask yourself, is it really worth it? Sell the car before it is too late.
  10. Seems like it would be an hours work, so wait for the car and kick the service manager in the shins as you leave.
  11. While you are riggin' an alternate horn button you might consider upgrading your airbag situation as seen below:
  12. http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=130454 If you read the post linked above, there is some discussion of the location and possible cause of this oil seepage. If it's bad enough SOA will cover replacemnt under 60K warranty. Mine had just ran over an extended 80K warranty but SOA graciously kicked in 1K of a $1300 bill for the hg job and I paid the additional charges for early replacement of tb/wp/tensioner parts only.
  13. 2005 are prone to an external oil leak. Look at the lower end to see if this has developed. Some say just drive it and check the oil. It adds about 1000-1300 to your hg job at a shop as I recall. Otherwise, recommended in addition to the tb and wp are the rollers, gear, and tensioner. These parts can be purchased as a complete kit for for just about what you'd pay for the tb and wp at the dealer. Labor $ is just about the same. I recently posted a youtube video of a shop doing the full hg etc. repair on an Impreza.
  14. Came across the following youtube video for 06-07 Imprezza replacement of timing belt, tensioner, water pump and rollers. Done in under 1 hour. I've never tried this myself so please Wiki this thing if anything needs correcting or if applicable to other models/years. Moderators please relocate if this belongs someplace else.
  15. http://www.fillernecksupply.com/servlet/the-1009/42066FA140-1999-99-2000/Detail This is for 98 Legacy. References an emission valve (not included). Not sure what part was ordered but a trip to dealer with VIN will assure the correct part is in hand.
  16. Well, I now have heard the same sounds on my wife's 05 OB (subject of this post), my daughter's 05 Legacy and my 08 OB. I have to assume that this cold start/stop sound is normal. I am bringing it in for a free (Lifetime) oil change and will ask the tech to identify the sound.
  17. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FAYcT4uhytg&feature=youtu.be :popcorn:Grab your popcorn and head on over. The sounds aren't produced as clearly as I had hoped but what I am referring to is the final 2 coughs of each start/stop cycle recorded. As stated earlier, it doesn't make the sounds once the car is completely warmed up.
  18. 05 Outback. 120k miles. Auto. I guess I've never been under the hood when I turned the ignition off so I wasn't sure what "normal" was. After the car was driven for a while, it didn't make the "cough cough" when I turned the key off. I drove it to a buddy who is a Lexus service manager and after listening to the non-sound first questioned my sanity then questioned whether the smell was noticeable since I was starting and stopping the engine while in the garage (yes door was open). Anyway, I checked my 08 Outback and it makes something of a similar "cough." It seems to be coming from the passenger front side on both cars. They are garaged together. Perhaps the cough is contagious. I'll try to do an audio capture tomorrow and post.
  19. Wife said there was a grinding noise today when she started the car so she turned it off and waited. When I start the car, I don't hear a grinding sound but after I shut the car off, I can hear a cough cough sound like a little backfire or valve opening/closing from around the area of passenger side of engine and there is a chemical smell that I can't identify?? Any thoughts appreciated.
  20. Need to check for codes again. Not sure why connector not working but as soon as a code is thrown on my 05 Outback, check engine light comes on and cruise is disabled (light blinking). My code is unrelated to cruise. Usually P0420 catalytic converter blah blah blah.
