2005 are prone to an external oil leak. Look at the lower end to see if this has developed. Some say just drive it and check the oil. It adds about 1000-1300 to your hg job at a shop as I recall. Otherwise, recommended in addition to the tb and wp are the rollers, gear, and tensioner. These parts can be purchased as a complete kit for for just about what you'd pay for the tb and wp at the dealer. Labor $ is just about the same. I recently posted a youtube video of a shop doing the full hg etc. repair on an Impreza.

Came across the following youtube video for 06-07 Imprezza replacement of timing belt, tensioner, water pump and rollers. Done in under 1 hour. I've never tried this myself so please Wiki this thing if anything needs correcting or if applicable to other models/years. Moderators please relocate if this belongs someplace else.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FAYcT4uhytg&feature=youtu.be :popcorn:Grab your popcorn and head on over. The sounds aren't produced as clearly as I had hoped but what I am referring to is the final 2 coughs of each start/stop cycle recorded. As stated earlier, it doesn't make the sounds once the car is completely warmed up.

05 Outback. 120k miles. Auto. I guess I've never been under the hood when I turned the ignition off so I wasn't sure what "normal" was. After the car was driven for a while, it didn't make the "cough cough" when I turned the key off. I drove it to a buddy who is a Lexus service manager and after listening to the non-sound first questioned my sanity then questioned whether the smell was noticeable since I was starting and stopping the engine while in the garage (yes door was open). Anyway, I checked my 08 Outback and it makes something of a similar "cough." It seems to be coming from the passenger front side on both cars. They are garaged together. Perhaps the cough is contagious. I'll try to do an audio capture tomorrow and post.

Wife said there was a grinding noise today when she started the car so she turned it off and waited. When I start the car, I don't hear a grinding sound but after I shut the car off, I can hear a cough cough sound like a little backfire or valve opening/closing from around the area of passenger side of engine and there is a chemical smell that I can't identify?? Any thoughts appreciated.

From FAQ: How do I attach a file to a post? To attach a file to your post, you need to be using the main 'New Post' or 'New Thread' page and not 'Quick Reply'. To use the main 'New Post' page, click the 'Post Reply' button in the relevant thread. On this page, below the message box, you will find a button labelled 'Manage Attachments'. Clicking this button will open a new window for uploading attachments. You can upload an attachment either from your computer or from another URL by using the appropriate box on this page. Alternatively you can click the Attachment Icon to open this page. To upload a file from your computer, click the 'Browse' button and locate the file. To upload a file from another URL, enter the full URL for the file in the second box on this page. Once you have completed one of the boxes, click 'Upload'. Once the upload is completed the file name will appear below the input boxes in this window. You can then close the window to return to the new post screen. What files types can I use? How large can attachments be? In the attachment window you will find a list of the allowed file types and their maximum sizes. Files that are larger than these sizes will be rejected. There may also be an overall quota limit to the number of attachments you can post to the board. How do I add an image to a post? If you have uploaded an image as an attachment, you can click the arrow next to the 'Attachment Icon' and select it from the list. This will be inserted into your post and can be located where you want it displayed. To include an image that is not uploaded as an attachment and is located on another website, you can do so by copying the full URL to the image, (not the page on which the image is located), and either pressing the 'Insert Image' icon or by typing after it, ensuring that you do not have any spaces before or after the URL of the image. You can insert pictures from your albums (?) in this way too.

I think y'all may have missed the point that this is a dealer only proposition with some help from SOA. I didn't catch this before the 80K warranty ran out so shame on me. Effectively, my out of pocket $300 cost will about equal what I would have to pay for a TB job. The rest of the $ from SOA would cover the HG work. All them extra parts your tossin' in will add up pretty darn quick, especially at dealer prices. Just saying... BTW, the tech does the HGs in the car all the time. Says he just tilts the engine.

3" of rain is a good opportunity for some differential diagnosis. Cover the sunroofs with plastic (garbage bags etc) and duct tape the edges. If you are wet tomorrow, then it is either the windshield seal or the drain from the cowling area below the windshield. BTW, does it ever get wet simply by running the AC or actually, the same if you run the defroster which may coincide with when it is raining? If that is the case, perhaps the drain line from that unit has come detached from the AC unit under the dash.

Actually, at this point, the oil is settling on the cross member so none is even appearing on my garage floor. The oil mixing with coolant that GG describes as a rarity is somewhat comforting. So what years did/will SOA HG be considered solid? My 08 at 60K is dry but as I said, both 05s (105K and 82K) are weeping. The discussion and link referenced damage to cats (I have an intermittent P0420 on my 105K 05) from oil burning etc. That info is all over the board as well. The post did verify that the cheaters don't work on 05+. But that's another story.

Found the following in a link on the NASIOC site relating to 05+ and potential fouling of cats: "Your model year has a problem where it starts to leak very early from the oil return galleries on the bottom of the heads. Make no mistake: it IS a headgasket leak and you DO need to do something about it. You'll get no further warning before it converts to a much more serious oil-to-coolant leak." BOTH of my 05's have the telltale oil leak at the driver's side! My passenger cat is in P0420 mode off and on. Anybody tracking these leaks and ultimate failure rates?

Thanks for the link but even more now to worry about with MY05 "Your model year has a problem where it starts to leak very early from the oil return galleries on the bottom of the heads. Make no mistake: it IS a headgasket leak and you DO need to do somehting about it. You'll get no further warning before it converts to a much more serious oil-to-coolant leak." BOTH of my 05's have the telltale oil leak at the driver's side! Anybody tracking these leaks and failure rates? May have to start a new thread.
