My father-in-law arrived in his 2002 Legacy GT having just noticed temp gauge had hit the red zone. He turned on the heater (smart guy) and it came down and he drove the last mile or two here. I put in about a gallon of water and drove it around. There is a slow drip near the bottom, passenger side about an inch behind the timing cover at the area where I suppose the thermostat calls home. Is this how a faulty water pump rears its ugly little head?

This may not relate to your Forrester but on my 05 OB, the capability was there BUT the engineers hadn't thought it through. The result was an inaccessible filter. The filter box AND tray were there but no access to open compartment/change filter. Early into production, they realized their oops and discontinued offering the option. Later they offered a questionable fix with something of a curtain but hunting around other sites I found a much better solution. You can swap parts from the 08 into the 05 and it will make it functional. I actually pitched a b@#tch with SOA concerning their under-engineering and they gave me a $100 credit that I applied towards the installation. I got discounted parts from http://www.SubaruPartsForYou (which is my local dealer anyway). I couldn't ask for a better outcome from SOA customer relations department.

These two indicate that you have a Fault Code to be read from the car's on board computer. There is a connector below the steering wheel that you connect to a code reader. The code reader will tell you what's wrong via a series of numbers. Once you have these numbers you will get an idea of what to do. Locally, auto parts stores routinely check for free but I'm unfamiliar with Macedonia. I think you can clear the code by disconnecting the battery for a few minutes, press on the brake pedal then reconnect the battery but that may screw up radio presets and alarm systems. You may get lucky and the code won't come back but it is better to know what the problem is. Best to read the code and find out what's wrong.

How old are the power belts (PS and Alternator) on the car. Just changed mine out at 105,000 miles and while they looked OK from the outside, they were shot on the inside! YIKES. There was a bit of a squeal right after the new ones were installed that disappeared with the corrected tension. So, you still have the problem and they have your $$. I hate listening to some service managers. They sound worse than aluminum siding salesmen. Please ask questions here before spending your cash. There are some very talented members who are generous with their time and knowledge that have helped me enormously and taught me a thing or three.

How do I attach a file to a post? To attach a file to your post, you need to be using the main 'New Post' or 'New Thread' page and not 'Quick Reply'. To use the main 'New Post' page, click the 'Post Reply' button in the relevant thread. On this page, below the message box, you will find a button labelled 'Manage Attachments'. Clicking this button will open a new window for uploading attachments. You can upload an attachment either from your computer or from another URL by using the appropriate box on this page. Alternatively you can click the Attachment Icon to open this page. To upload a file from your computer, click the 'Browse' button and locate the file. To upload a file from another URL, enter the full URL for the file in the second box on this page. Once you have completed one of the boxes, click 'Upload'. Once the upload is completed the file name will appear below the input boxes in this window. You can then close the window to return to the new post screen. What files types can I use? How large can attachments be? In the attachment window you will find a list of the allowed file types and their maximum sizes. Files that are larger than these sizes will be rejected. There may also be an overall quota limit to the number of attachments you can post to the board. How do I add an image to a post? If you have uploaded an image as an attachment, you can click the arrow next to the 'Attachment Icon' and select it from the list. This will be inserted into your post and can be located where you want it displayed. To include an image that is not uploaded as an attachment and is located on another website, you can do so by copying the full URL to the image, (not the page on which the image is located), and either pressing the 'Insert Image' icon or by typing after it, ensuring that you do not have any spaces before or after the URL of the image. You can insert pictures from your albums (?) in this way too.

Click on down arrow next to the paperclip icon. Click on Browse and find the picture file on your computer you want to upload. It will tell you file dimension, type and size that will work. Once uploaded click on paperclip again and you will see your file. Place the cursor where you want the picture. Click on file and you are done. Click Preview Post to see the picture as it will appear. I just inserted the following pix following the above steps.

Scroll over the icons in the heading above where you would type a post or reply. There is a way of adding attachments (paperclip icon) and attaching images (square icon with a landscape of a mountain etc). It will tell you what size and type of files are compatible. You can upload images to USMB and link to them directly.

Please explain. What code #? Reason I ask is that I was about to change cat on my 05 OB after repeated P0420. I had tried one, then two cheaters and then gave up and cleared code after removing cheaters. 1000 miles so far without code reappearing. Wonder if it was just some bad gas and deposits or if Lady Luck is riding in the back seat...

Well, I don't really need one since USMB has all the info I've ever needed, but I thought another member might like a book to get all greasy in the shop. They've got other discounts on rotors etc. but I've never trusted them with anything but wiper fluid. Mods: If not appropriate here, please move this to wherever it belongs.

Having owned a 2000 Legacy GT AT, the issues I can report were the delayed engagement in the AT and of course the external head gasket leaks that can be cured by feeding Subaru Leak-No-Mo to the radiator. I did love that car though... I've learned that the rental companies would get the 05 in Feb/March 04. I bought a used 08 that had gone into service with Hertz in Feb 07.

http://www.carstereoremoval.com/htm/stereoremovalSubaruOutback05_08P.htm the above link has instructions for $5 I used the following instructions (with pics) when I was retrofitting the cabin air filter (which was not factory installed due to poor space design). There are a number of screws beneath the center console and snap on trim pieces that need to be removed to get to the innards. http://legacygt.com/forums/showthread.php/installation-cabin-air-filter-56k-warning-1626p9.html?t=1626&page=9 Hope this helps.
