  1. With a bad back at the end of the day, once I felt the bolt spin twice, I just snugged it up, didn't take anything apart to verify "stripped", shavings etc. Now seeing the schematics, it looks like the whole sleeve/nut may be spinning against the shoulder of the caliper. The sleeve has two flat sides and for whatever reason may not be snugged up against the body of the caliper. So either I rounded over the sleeve's "flats" or I cut a groove in the shoulder of the cast caliper. Hmmm which is harder? Could I have really done so much damage with a small ratchet wrench?
  2. I think you miss my point. I'm not sure there is anything wrong with the bracket... The threads are inside the sleeve (see the link I provided above). How do these sleeves fit into the bracket to keep them from spinning??
  3. Dealer said there was one in all of NE area so I can have it early next week with holiday closings! What am I missing here? Something isn't adding up... Oh and I agree, I was using a small ratsheet wrench and wasn't trying to beat the stuffing out of it when it stripped out.:-\ All I was doing was inspecting the pads. Loosened the top bolt, removed the bottom bolt, spun caliper up, reverse order tighten and then... wish I had left well enough alone... So let's slow this train down now... see the link below: http://www.autozone.com/autozone/catalog/parts/partsProduct.jsp?itemIdentifier=125288_0_4222_&skuDescription=Brakeware+/+Brake+Caliper+Bolt/Pin&brandName=Brakeware&displayName=Brake+Caliper+Bolt/Pin&categoryNValue=&sortType=&store=5156&isSearchByPartNumber=&fromWhere=&fromString=&counter=0&itemId=555-0&navValue=14400555&filterByKeyWord=&productId=125288&searchText=&categoryDisplayName=Brakes+%26+Traction+Control&parentId=44-0 It appears that in my oh &^%$# moment and asking for assistance, I didn't do any of my own exploration. Seems that the top bolt is threaded into a sleeve that is "inserted" into the elusive and expensive bracket?? Sooo, before we take out the antigravity machines that we've been dying to use, is there anyone here who has actually had this apart who can fix this with earth tools? I have a reman caliper on hand (initially planning for the worst) and the kit has two different sleeves. One has an additional collar at the end opposite the threaded end. Which sleeve is on top? How do these sleeves fit into the bracket? This is my only ride and I don't want to take it apart until I know where I'm going with it.
  4. I did some noodling around and I can get the bracket (bridge?) that the caliper mates up to and the bolt threads into for $40 from SubaruPartsForYou.com. Seems like less labor and a little more predictable since this is a frequently used location when changing pads or are helicoils rock solid, better than new? Waddayathink? Interesting to note the ages of (and types of) the answers from those that responded. I'm closer to the geezer end of the spectrum.
  5. Got a little too aggressive (overtightened) and stripped the top bolt on the drivers side brake caliper. What do I need to make things right? 2008 Subaru OB
  6. I do recall seeing a lifetime seatbelt warranty in one of my subie manuals (a Subaru tech first told me about this) and a google search shows many people getting warranty replacements. Some dealers had to be convinced SO why not call Subaru of America and get it in writing to bring to the dealer and then you get to laugh at them and then ask why they wasted your time when you first brought this to their attention. I can't recall what year this became effective and you didn't mention what year your car was (pre 1968?) so why not just verify with Subaru and post back with your results.
  7. Jump up and down and demand your money back and assure them that unless you get your money back, you intend to park yourself and your car in front of their sales office as long as it takes to convince them (and any future customers) that your advertisement will be bad for their business model.
  8. This really wasn't about the Subaru anyway. Life is not solely about the journey. It's mostly about the people you meet along the way. Good luck with your adventures. ps damn shame the trans x didn't work:-\
  9. Rattling noise could possibly just be the heat shields on the exhaust. Get under the car and bang around on those buggers. They can decide to rattle at peculiar times. Not sure about the "shake" part of the equation though.
  10. Did you actually turn your lights on?? High beams will flash w/o lights being on... oh yeah and then there is that pesky parking light switch on top of the steering column (use to be called the virgin switch because all of us Subaru "virgins" would unwittingly hit it during a "quick wipe down of the interior" and the exterior parking lights wouldn't go off) (also called the battery kill switch by Subaru technicians for the same reason as above... lights staying on and killing the friggin' battery) Just reread your post... seems pretty likely it's the Virgin Switch and I hope you read this before you kill your battery tonight.
  11. http://www.danperkinssubaru.com/MiscPage_6 Got this as an email today. Certainly not for the shade tree mechanics that lurk here but for those who would normally do all service at shops and keep records, seems like a decent deal. This is the same dealer as subarupartsforyou.com where I get my parts for cheap here on the east coast.
  12. ++ on the cheap fix. SOA wants a pretty penny for their "stink-no-more" processes. I haven't yet reassembled the dash after installing the cabin air filter. I see where the blower motor is and assume that the evaporator is below that. Too cold to play with it today but if I can actually visualize and clean the evaporator I guess beyond that I would need an exorcist.
  13. I bought a used 08 OB and there has always been an odd smell from the HVAC unit. Kinda like smoked meat:eek: mostly when I first turn it on. I changed the cabin air filter and sprayed Lysol down into the vents as well as directly in when the cabin filter was out. Water is draining out normally when running the AC and defroster. I guess the only thing left is cleaning the evaporator. Has anyone done the drill the hole/squirt in the cleaner treatment to clean the evaporator box? I'm not even sure how to access the area. Any pictures or diagrams/instructions/material-parts list appreciated. Hell, I'll drop the car off and pick it up in a few hours if that works for you.
  14. http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=100679 Looks like the same notice I got about 6 months ago. Has the mailman been holding out on you or is this a different notification?
  15. OK Michael, details? How many miles since the plugs were done? Hate to admit it but it is one of those things that I haven't done since... well... anyway, what is the recommended interval on the H3 for plugs and when did you do them last? You may well decide to await her return west OR drive out here and do them yourself... 120,000 miles seems like you are just breaking in a Subaru. Glad to hear the trip east went well. We are expecting an inch of snow here tonight With your daughter's SLC experience, I think she can handle our east coast conditions. Be forewarned, if she stays here too long, before you know it, she'll have a stubborn New England accent and that is harder to change than old spark plugs:lol:
  16. External HG leak seaped out behind engine head on driver's side on my 2000. Tech said this was typical location. No other symptoms but HG repair was performed under 100k warranty.
  17. Not a guru but I live about 10 minutes away. Not much of a wrencher but I know enough not to get hammered by a mechanic. It's very civilized here but the prices are going to be steeper than out west so get your daughter's wheels in order and point her east. She'll be an hour train ride from NYC. No need to drive in and deal with all that. 2.5 hours by car to Boston. Norwalk is by the shore and a great place in the summer. I know you said something about a job but there is life after work and Conn. is a great place to live. Oh yeah, I almost forgot to mention that when they have the Norwalk oyster festival, they serve real oysters and not the Rocky Mountain variety:eek: Send me a PM if you have any concerns.
