The lit displays on the HVAC and Radio/cd aren't working. The surrounding dials etc are lit but the screens that normally show the status of the HVAC or the radio station/cd are blank. The HVAC and radio work otherwise. Still under warranty so it's takin' a ride but thought I'd ask the intelligencia. Separate fuse?

Been thinkin' (always a bad omen) about cleaning MAF sensor on my 2000 GT Legacy in hopes of solving the occasional ping under certain temp/humidity conditions. I read that a dirty MAF sensor can cause everything from stuttering and hesitation (but not Tourette's Syndrome) to male pattern baldness. Could it help the pinging? Where is the sensor?

Check out NHTSA.gov for recalls and tech service bulletins. Tshe realls would be covered but if you use inverse reasoning, you can sometimes figure out what might be or about to become defective with your model year. I have a 2000 GT. AT developed delayed engagement as indicated in one of the TSBs. There is another recently asking questions about his OIB and some things apply across the 2000 year and not just model. Has the car received the coolant additive that extends HG warranty to 8 years, 100K miles? It's a recall item and any dealer will be able to tell yopu if there are any recalls open on your vehivle using the VIN. Welcome aboard and good luck.

Once you have the door panel off to repair the window, there is actually a TSB (tech service bulletin) for repairing the sagging weatherstripping. I think they have a set of clips. Do a search on here for leaking sunroof and leaking lights. These issues have been covered a few times. The SEARCH function is your friend. All in all, the issues presented seem to be minor issues that should be worthwhile fixing and 200K+ seems plausible. Go to NHTSA.gov and check out the service bulletins (about15) and recalls( about 4).

If you look at the first page of the New Gen site there are a few sticky posts. The first is FAQ. This contains information, such as the very thorough write up in this post, that has been addressed with such eloquence that by posting it in the FAQs prevents such stalkers as Nipper, Cougar, OB97 and many more from developing tunnel carpal syndrome from retyping the same information over and over and over... did I say over and over and over...

It's happened to a friend's car a few times now... going uphill in a 96 Legacy (150,000 miles) the car stalls out. Pull to side of road. Turn car off few minutes start and all is well. Any suggestions? Car has had fairly routine maintenance. Where to start?? There is a post about failing ignition relays but didn't seem isolated to uphill conditions.

It is a common issue with the 2000 AT. Apparently the delay shifting is a result of an internal seal not functioning properly and preventing rapid buildup of pressure. My AT was replaced while under warranty. I don't know if a shop would repair as compared to SOA replacement policy instead of their techs fumphering around all day seeing IF they can figure the problem. Go to the NHTSA.gov site and check under MY 2000 for a TSB on delayed engagement.

I had a similar problem with my 2000 Legacy. My fix was fairly simple (but I am pretty tall). Open the car door and stand on the door sill. With the glass open on the sunroof, you should be able to visualize the sunshade and how it sits in the track. Some gentle wiggling and persuasion and ...tada. I have since been more cautious about pushing the shade forward and back without pushing up.

Had a similar problem on a 91. Filler tube has a "protective" shroud at a J-bend down low and just next to the tire. This shroud traps dirt and moisture and eventually causes pin holes as the metal thins out. Pull the shroud back, clear away the caked dirt and you may see gas seeping through tiny holes.

Tires

Just yesterday I got 4 Kumho Solus tires from Tirerack.com after two sets of Dunlop A2 tires that were noisy and never came close to 60,000 mile rating (replace at 25K). Kumhos are noticeably quieter and handle nicely. Will have to wait a few months to speak about ice and snow performance but a few board members spoke highly of them and they were rated pretty well so for $65 each compared to $110 for the highly acclaimed BFG triple track, I thought I'd give them a try. If you see me in a ditch this winter then go for the BFGs.
