  1. http://www.cars101.com/subaru_legacy_archive98_99.html#1999%20%20L,%20brighton%20specs Looks like Phase II 2.2
  2. It would seem that the 2.2 was preferable over the 2.5 self-destruct headgasketed engine???
  3. If you look at the first page of the New Gen site there are a few sticky posts. The first is FAQ. This contains information, such as the very thorough write up in this post, that has been addressed with such eloquence that by posting it in the FAQs prevents such stalkers as Nipper, Cougar, OB97 and many more from developing tunnel carpal syndrome from retyping the same information over and over and over... did I say over and over and over...
  4. Will Autozone free code readers work on a 96? Is this an OBDI or OBDII or an Obi-Wan Kenobi? The owner claims his light is "always" on, that he goes into the shop, they reset it and it comes back on after a while... go figure.
  5. It's happened to a friend's car a few times now... going uphill in a 96 Legacy (150,000 miles) the car stalls out. Pull to side of road. Turn car off few minutes start and all is well. Any suggestions? Car has had fairly routine maintenance. Where to start?? There is a post about failing ignition relays but didn't seem isolated to uphill conditions.
  6. Phew... wer're rooting for you... not driving behind you yet but rooting for you. PS CRC has a new MAF sensor cleaner free after rebate until 12-31-06. Coupon was in Popular Mechanics. Blurb said it's specifically designed to clean MAF without damage... so they sez!
  7. It is a common issue with the 2000 AT. Apparently the delay shifting is a result of an internal seal not functioning properly and preventing rapid buildup of pressure. My AT was replaced while under warranty. I don't know if a shop would repair as compared to SOA replacement policy instead of their techs fumphering around all day seeing IF they can figure the problem. Go to the NHTSA.gov site and check under MY 2000 for a TSB on delayed engagement.

  9. I had a similar problem with my 2000 Legacy. My fix was fairly simple (but I am pretty tall). Open the car door and stand on the door sill. With the glass open on the sunroof, you should be able to visualize the sunshade and how it sits in the track. Some gentle wiggling and persuasion and ...tada. I have since been more cautious about pushing the shade forward and back without pushing up.
  10. Had a similar problem on a 91. Filler tube has a "protective" shroud at a J-bend down low and just next to the tire. This shroud traps dirt and moisture and eventually causes pin holes as the metal thins out. Pull the shroud back, clear away the caked dirt and you may see gas seeping through tiny holes.
  11. Go steal it back.;)JK. Someone stooped real low to get that part.
  12. Just yesterday I got 4 Kumho Solus tires from Tirerack.com after two sets of Dunlop A2 tires that were noisy and never came close to 60,000 mile rating (replace at 25K). Kumhos are noticeably quieter and handle nicely. Will have to wait a few months to speak about ice and snow performance but a few board members spoke highly of them and they were rated pretty well so for $65 each compared to $110 for the highly acclaimed BFG triple track, I thought I'd give them a try. If you see me in a ditch this winter then go for the BFGs.
  13. Saw this while having my tires mounted todayt. Located in Stratford CT. 88 GL 4WD Hi/Lo Manual 170K miles. Mechanic was taking parts off for his dad (alternator/window motor/instrument panel/ most lights and lenses shot) but said tranny and engine were sound. Needs clutch. Can't drive but you might be interested in grabbing tranny/engine etc. for a song or two. PM me if interested in other details and I'll put you in touch with the owner directly. The mechanic doesn't want to bother much with it so hurry.
  14. Let us know how it works out. The members will respond to questions so that even if you don't want to get down and dirty with the Subaru, at least you will be an informed consumer. Good luck.
  15. Could be as simple as a faulty gas cap seal or... your windshield is missing! Ask previous owner if possible or go fail (maybe) for yourself and then deal with the identified issue otherwise you are just roaming around in the dark and maybe replacing perfectly good parts.
  16. Would this be noticeable with an OBD scanner or only in the rear view mirror?
  17. From the Subaru school of duh! You couldn't make it more obscure if you tried.
  18. You are in Pa. Try DiscountParts.com. They are the online venture of Liberty Subaru in NJ, maybe close enough to keep shipping down. When you call Liberty, ask for the Parts Department and then specify the "discount parts" price. It's basically the same as local mechanics would pay. Jamie aka SubieGal on this site (search members) is very knowledgeable (and a major hard driving babe;)) affiliated with a west coast dealer and in CT. we have subarupartsforyou.com. The discounted price makes it real easy to use genueeny Subaru parts. Put an order together for plugs, wires and filters and no tax covers shipping plus great prices.
  19. Corrected. Thanks. what about washers or seals? are there any kind of seals that may sit between the spark plug and the seat? The washers come already installed on the spark plugs
  20. It is a fuse and needs to be installed when driving with the spare to prevent damage to the AWD caused by different sized tires. The fuse disengages AllWD and makes the car FrontWD. If you do a Search on the site, there are numerous discussions of concern in using replacement tires where there is significant difference in wear of the other tires. Some tire dealers flat out (no pun intended) recommend that you need to replace all 4.
