warranty

I believe it extended the warranty on HG to 8 years 100,000 miles. Go get 'em. If you have a decent relationship with the dealer, they should just jump in and do it. They get paid and you get peace of mind. Mine failed on my 2000 Legacy. Since the stuff evaporates quickly, if you are concerned, ask them to add a UV dye to the coolant and drive it for a while and then it will show up under UV light at any leak points. I had been getting a faint whiff of glycol but could never see actual leak. I guess it only leaked under certain conditions. You might mention the smell. It is possible one of your hoses has a tiny leak?? -
If you are talking about the incessant seatbelt warning that continues until you buckle up, and if it's the same as our 05, help is on the way, but first... I'm sure you wouldn't mind a gentle reminder to you and your front seat passenger that there is a device on board (seatbelt) that will, in the event of an accident, prevent you or your passenger from becoming a hood ornament or end up lap dancing with an oncoming motorist... right? OK enough gentle persuasion. Now turn the key to the ON position but DO NOT START the car. Now buckle and unbuckle the driver's seatbelt 15-20 times as rapidly as you can. Then while the belt is buckled, turn the key to the OFF position and say TaDa! The next time you start the car, the seatbelt chime will chime 5-6 times and then stop. It worked for me the first time but use the SEARCH function on this site for "seat belt alarm" and you can refresh my memory.

Gusset gets distorted from people pressing on the window either while opening or closing the door or squeezing past it in tight parking spots etc.. This is a drawback of the frameless door. OK now for the fix. You can buy new gussets from SOA. I don't know if they were just new or new and improved but mine were both replaced under warranty. Then one tech explained the cause and showed me his fix. Lower the window, squeeze the top part of the gusset together (like reversing the spreading and torqueing action of grabbing the glass) and you should be good to go. Seems logical and frugal. Good luck.

The oil around the plugs/boots is the result of leaky gaskets where the plugs go through the valve cover. You can replace these when you replace the valve cover gasket but it's not crucial. Sorry but I don't have the manual at hand. Any Sub dealer should be able to give you the spec on the ?NGK plugs.

I'm all for a "pinging" sticky. How does one determine a "colder" plug and is there any science in determining how much colder? My car is a 2000 Legacy GT Auto with pinging (apparently unlike Brice k) from day one using manual prescribed 87 octane, slightly less noticeable at 89 and nearly gone at 91. Condition is nonexistent in winter and presents itself when ambient temperature reaches about 60 degrees F and is even sometimes present under light load.

I know what you mean about the rear view fear. I took a Continental in the rear of a Volvo P1800 years ago in W. Islip, fractured neck and back. Casted but no "tincture of cold steel" applied by the surgeons as in your case. Thanks for the cool plug tip and get better soon. -

Hey Nipster, Would I need summer and winter plugs? Is there any ill effect of running colder plugs in winter when there is apparently no problem with pinging? BTW, where on LI are you with that bad back? Back when I spoke the "Queens" english, my neck and back were fractured in auto accident in W. Islip (not a Subaru but I passed the crash test.. the Volvo P-1800 was a gonner). -

On my 2000 Legacy GT they replaced the knock sensor with no effect. New plugs (same temp range) nada. Upper engine clean, numerous times, zippo. Tech opened and checked timing... he said cam gear was off two teeth but reset timing and new timing belt later... yup, sorry Chucko. When head gaskets were replaced under warranty they said there was some carbon buildup removed from the upper cylinder wall... you guessed it, the same. I am wondering if a new air freshener would work by diminishing my brain cells or turn the radio up so loud as to finish off the brain cells. -

Ask to test drive another same make and model that you select at random from the lot to determine if this is a function of the design. My 2000 Legacy GT has pinged from day one but seemed better with higher grade octane that was listed for the car ($$$!). 5 years later: Never a code, related to warmer weather ie above 60 degrees F most noticeable. SOA told me last week that manual section 7-2 asserts that "pinging" is normal and not detrimental to car. If you find another 05 that doesn't make the pinging then continue bringing it back and document complaints that they fail to remedy and finally threaten Lemon Law. You said octane rating didn't seem to matter much. How about ambient temperature? My 05 Outback seems OK with the same gas that causes problems with my 00 Legacy. I have to be a little more agressive with acceleration to minimize the pinging but I'm not happy with what I consider a design flaw in the 00. In your case, do the comparison and then ask to meet with a regional rep if yours turns out to be the runt of the litter.
