  1. 05 Gold Outback: My wife parked under a tree and the resultant stains from birds above seem to have been cooked into the clear coat! The debris washed away but no amount of scrubbing, even compounding, got it clean. Any suggestions short of an arc welder would be appreciated.
  2. On a 94 you would expect enough carbon buildup to cause preignition or pinging so try a can or two of SeaFoam poured in the gas tank, sucked into a vacuum line and sprayed into the throttle body. New plugs might make a difference too BUT on a 05??? I'd deal with the dealership right now and get a record of everything.
  3. 05 naturally aspirated Outback runs fine on 87 (various brands) but I am still struggling with a 00 Legacy GT that pings (since new) at various degrees more at 87 and less with less at the 93 octane level.(Yikes on the price). Knock sensor changed, computer "flashed", timing checked (one gear off at cam), Sea Foam upper engine cleaned, new plugs, cleaned throttle body. I'm now searching the possibility of demonic possession.

  5. 2000 Legacy GT Automatic. Today I noticed a whirring sound from the engine compartment but couldn't localize the sound. I think I guessed correctly though. Tonight when I stopped for a minute, the car wouldn't restart. Got a jump and started but the lights were considerably dimmer than normal and no amount of revving the engine helped. The serpentine belt is intact. Alternator? Probably, but why didn't I get an idiot light??
  6. Asked politely at my local dealer and was told sales are very disappointing...
  7. Have you tried SeaFoam sucked directly into one of the vacuum ports? Do it slowly and don't let the car stall. It's supposed to clean valves etc. of carbon (pinging?) then for teh injectors, throw some in the gas tank and add some premium gas and see how it runs. Be aware that after you let the car sit after the vacuum part, the car will smoke like "James Bond" for about 5 minutes so drive the snot out of it on a highway where nobody knows you.
  8. Wasn't aware of your local dealer warranty and service you apparently received. If you actually did the rotations and they can't disprove the fact, then ask them exactly what "mechanical" causes are they referring to. It would seem that some sort of prorate is in order. Read their warranty and ask to speak to "corporate" if still unsatisfied.
  9. Yes, you're F'ed. The way it's been explained to me, by the time you pay to rotate and balance every 5,000 miles or whatever your warranty required, you're better off getting brandy new tires. Try using TireRack.com. I've been satisfied with the F'ing I got from them as good as any other.
  10. Pinion gear in transmission. SOA will tell you it's normal. Tell them not to your ear.
  11. Skip, I believe this is part of the Code Alarm System: Battery failed and lights flashing? Parking lights will flash when the vehicle's battery is disconnected and reconnected. To stop lights from flashing, either: Press remote transmitter “UNLOCK” button once OR turn the ignition switch to the “ON” position and press programming button for one second (see below). The vehicle interior (courtesy) light and door open warning light (DOOR AJAR indicator) will then illuminate for 60 seconds when the ignition is turned off, or until the doors are locked with the remote transmitter. Yes, the dashboard instrument panel lights will flash when the parking lights flash. The rest of the alarm info is at link: http://www.cars101.com/subaru/keyless.html#code%20alarm Good luck and welcome Pickles.

  13. I will assume that you are using the same grade of gasoline as in the past since octane that is too low (see owner's manual) will cause "pre-ignition" or "pinging". Some of the more common causes and remedies I've come across in dealing with the condition: Old spark plugs - change plugs Carbon buildup on pistons/valves - do upper engine cleaning using products such as Seafoam sucked into the intake manifold and sprayed into the throttle body or a gas line engine cleaner added to the gas tank. Knock sensor - change sensor There are some other exotic possibilities that I am exploring as I have yet to solve my problem of "pinging". Hope the simple fixes work for you.
  14. Only realized the other day that my 00 has a "dummy" cig lighter in the ash tray. I guess the "dummy" is appropriate for smokers who haven't realized that, once lit, the cigarette smokes all by itself and the human component is relegated to "sucker" (I am a former sucker).
  15. Is there a repair for repairing the rubberized material that the new bumpers/grillwork is made from? I tried Bondo but it doesn't adhere. I have to repair a broken piece so it's not just a fill in.
  16. ADMIRABLE. Though I probably will never pull a piston, the video was inforamtive and fun to watch. Looking forward to the next episode. Thanks for yor efforts.
  17. You can get a small funnel with a long spout at WalMart for about $3. Beats growing another set of hands.
  18. While I have already given my thumbs down on the new grill on the Tribecca, I saw the same at the JDM website on the Imprezza and it doesn't seem as ridiculous in that scale... I think it's a matter of contributing to the overall esthetic imbalance on the Tribecca. Now, some of the other Subaru models on the site, apparently not US available, such as the Sambar and Pleo leave me totally perplexed and unimpressed style wise.
  19. Update: In spite of using 4 tanks of 93 octane Mobil (car should run on 87 as per SOA), the car still pings under light load just at about the 35mph mark. 73,000 miles. Had new air and gas filter and plugs, timing checked and adjusted (off on cam from factory), decarboned with SeaFoam three times and throttle body cleaned. knock sensor changed. Aside from posting your octane and pinging experiences with 99-03 vintages, if anyone has any suggestions, please unstump me.
  20. As a brain surgeon once told me, confidence lacking competence is very dangerous. Knowing when to say when is an indicator of good judgement.
  21. First thing is to dump all the gas from any yard power tools and then wrap your wrist in an ace bandage so as to eliminate need to use hand tools. Sheared off bolt... sorry, just bad luck.
  22. Isn't there a Mercedes that has the mail truck look as well? PS The Tribecca is definitely NOT for me.
  23. OK so what's with the gremlins in the 05 headlights? Two friends with 05 OBs have had the bulbs replaced. I'm now waiting for mine to go and will feel cheated if I don't have the same problem.
  24. Commendable for helping a member with a nod to the board. Sorry to hear about the ear problem...
