  1. My wife's 2005 OB non-turbo runs on the very same 87 octane with NO pinging. High test is pricey and if SOA is correct in their assessment of Connecticut gas, the spec. in the 2000 owner's manual should have included a disclaimer for CT. buyers. Perhaps SOA can still reprogram and flash the ECU to accomodate 87 octane.
  2. http://hem.passagen.se/pretend/EUbilar/Saab%201959%2093.JPG This link is for a 1959 model Saab that you might think resembles the Triblecha.
  3. 2.5 SOHC should run on 87 octane. I have had pinging from day one with my 2000 Legacy GT despite new plugs and gas filter, new MAP and knock sensor, seafoam injector and throttle body cleaner treatment, new windshield wipers etc. This 2.5 SOHC engine was used from 2000 to late 2003 in a variety of models. Despite best efforts of local tech, SOA suggests CT. gas at fault. Please post your year, model, location and octane usage.
  4. Very resourceful and conservative of motion. Checked your profile... wish I lived near "global".
  5. 93 Legacy Airbag light stays on. Not interested in any costly repairs. I don't think the bag ever deployed but the car is fairly rusted through and dented so I don't know if one or more sensors are damaged. How can I test for defect or at least turn off or remove the light on the dash. It's just a continuous reminder that I'm not driving a 2005 Mercedes
  6. Ah, Ismism... this one I like. With various degrees and studies in Geology, Paleontology and Paleoecology and with a nod to the various religions of the world, I have to conclude that there is admittedly a starting point. Whether it is a multiheaded God or some old guy with a beard, I'd rather give in to the notion that there is some organizing "force" certainly bigger than myself that come judgement day will kick the rump roast of whomever is responsible at Subaru of America for the damned head gasket issues. To hopefully put a peaceful punctuation to the unanswerable questions raised heretofore, I say Amen and Awomen.
  7. Anytime I am missing something, I look behind the refrigerator or between the cushions on the sofa.
  8. 05 Turbo MT OB died and has been in shop for over 30 days. Turbo and ECU have been replaced but still noisy and turbo seems to be starved for oil. Anyone else having problems or is this one just a lemon. It now qualifies for replacement under the lemon law in my state.
  9. Is there any difference if the door is open or closed i.e. is it a rubbing on the weatherstripping kind of noise or mechanical squeal from the mechanism itself. If it's the former, clean the weatherstripping and maybe try some silicone spray on the rubber. I'll defer to some greater minds on the silicone issue.
  10. Speaking of "Relativity", looking around at some of my relatives, I can see the phylogeny and behavioral similarities to the apes. If on the other hand, you choose the path of divine inspiration and you examine the collective mankind, you gotta wonder that at times, God was likely an underachiever. BTW, my original comments were gleaned from Borowitzreport.com and a satirical look at the Kansas school system removing Darwin and company from the texts. Addendum: Unfortunately unlike those with FWD, for the AWD owner, when we reach the end of the earth, the rear wheels will propel us over the edge and into the abyss. See ya there!
  11. MT, don't jump to conclusions. Proposed curriculum changes from would have us believe that whole Darwin thing, probably as well as the entire 20th Century is just a theory.
  12. Your assumption is probably right about them just tossing you whatever was around and yeah you should search for a replacement for the driver's side or rig the one you have (punch a hole where the post would line up). Try going back to the salesman and tell him you nearly killed a pedestrian when the mat got tangled around your brake pedal! If he is unresponsive, run him over and render him even more unresponsive. There are a number of Subaru dealer/discount parts suppliers. 1stSubaruParts.com (west coast) and Liberty Subaru in NJ have their discount parts department. It's the same as their regular parts supplier but they discount if you assk for it! Dan Perkins Subaru in Milford CT. will also give an online price. Pay shipping/no tax.
  13. I just realized that the gas filler tube on my 91 Legacy has a "protective" shroud that trapped years of road sand/dirt/salt and caused the pipe itself to rust through. Check yours out just behind the passenger rear tire. I also noted on my 90 Loyale and 00 Legacy that the same sand/dirt/salt collection occurs within the front quarter panel and you can access the area by opening the door and then rinse it out. Any other areas to watch out for?? An ounce of prevention....
  14. 36psi seems high. What is recommended in the manual for your veehickle or on the door post on the driver's side? Fill 'em all to spec. and then run it on the highway to see if you still have a drifting problem. If OK, relax and wait to see if the tire runs low again and then get it fixed. I once had 4 new tires mounted and balanced and an alignment only to discover when I had drifting problems soon thereafter that they just eyeballed the tire pressure. Way to go boys, lunch time!
  15. OK Set the multitester to Ohmmeter. You will need to have a probe connected to each lead and first touch each probe together. You will see the needle move which indicates that you have a completed circuit. Now if you touch one lead to one end of a wire and the other probe to the other end of a wire you should get the same result as above if the wire is a continuous circuit (continuity) and not broken. If you set the multitester to DC Volts and touch the red (positive) lead to positive battery terminal and the black (negative) to the negative battery terminal you will see 12 volts registered on the meter. Now move away from the battery to the switch and check that you've got power to switch and then each relay and leg of wire. This will indicate if the wire is conducting electricity from the last know point where you discovered current. Electricity is quite linear and the process is intuitive once you know the basics. Even if you don't solve this problem yourself, get friendly with multitester and follow the logic and process that finally fixes this for you. Hope this helps.
  16. Good question. What are the indications for doing all this work? Mechanic's child entering college next fall? Watch the fluid level very carefully. Test for hydrocarbons in fluid etc. If there are overheating problems and the mechanic actually filled and got the air out of your coolant system then consider the nasty deed. The price is insane. CCR Engines will ship one for about 1/3 what you've been quoted. CCR may even talk you into a 2.2 bulletproof engine instead of the plagued 2.5.
  17. Looks can be deceiving. Did you use an ohmmeter to test for continuity/resistance? This is the only predictable way to check for a break in the wire. Let us know if you are unsure of how to use a multitester.
  18. "airbags were not deployed. (Which was great because that's the most expensive part of a repair sometimes.)" True, true. Some insurance companies will total the car based on the cost of repairing/replacing sensors and bags. I didn't read about insurance or the like but hope you got your car road ready without too much pain. The fellow at least took responsibility and didn't claim that the boulder hit him. Take it from someone who has lost friends in auto accidents, thankfully only feelings and fenders were hurt.
