By the way I saw a stock late 90's Outback sport with a 2.2 Block and what looked to be DOHC 2.5 heads. stuffed in the front. Stock in junk yard?? Didn't know about the Sport engine. Will look up the specs. There are two for the taking in the yard.

We could really rock some Colorado snow on that mirror surface. HeHe. You and I will be sportin 60 sumpin hp this summer, hopefully together if the snubaru cures itself. I'm keepin mine ea81 with modified Hitachi for better response on primary and secondary circuit. Shame not to test out the Gear Motor for a season or two. Got most of everything together for a final push in 2-3 weeks. 3 inch BOSS lift, rear disk upgrade and Master, new shocks, 15's with 25.5 tires OFF-road steel wheels / 24.2 Street 15" PUGS. Original 4 bolt hubs for now but have a set of 6 bolt for another day. 5 speed conversion and new cross member (power steering upgrade) when I lift it. Will add 3/4 inch of spring rate front as well as I'm am getting a custom skid and winch bumper super heavy. Don't get in my way mama.. I little poo poo'd that the Cyclops is going to be a little in the way of the winch bumper. The guy I'm getting it from used to pull out 3/4 ton trucks with a 10,000 lb winch ... go figure. Used to make 2 big ones for that in the Rockies. Don't let your meatloaf Bro ...

Great Idea ... Replace the Cyclops light with it ...haha

Very Cool... When you get ready .. let me help especially with the harness. Mine's getting ej's phase 2 next year. I'm doing lift and 5 speed in 2 weeks. Still debating 2" or 4" . I can actually get an extra inch in front with the cool adjustable spring perches. Do a cool mod to the hitachi and keeping the motor stock. Trying to find an ea81 cross member with power rack?

Mr Wyo, Do you need a 4 speed? I Gage good help is hard to find. Just checkin. Happy Easter

interswapping EA81 and EA82 struts !
machthree2 replied to jono's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
You are correct on the fly bolts being thinner on ea 82 so slop. i think the combo is ea 81 fly, legacy 6 spring clutch, ea 81 pp. May have some tests done by weekend. -
Based on the the description of over charging and revving, you may have taken out the ecu for any circuits that are involved. I think it is the crank angle sensor signal that tells the fuel pump relay to turn back on. ecu will also check temp and control injector. Usually ecu is pretty cheap at salvage yard. Hard part about troubleshooting OBD 1 subes is the funcky led's. This is where a good manual that talks about input signals on early ecu cars is helpful. I eventually went to a obd2 with codes. You can do an ohm check on the temp sensors or they might be open.
-
Fuel pump pressurizes at ignition on and stops. Turns back on when ignition is running signal. A test is take the return fuel (if ea82 have those) and remove at firewall. Put the hose in a liter bottle and start car. Run very temporarily as fuel will quickly fill the bottle. It is amazing how much unused fuel goes to the injectors that is not used and returns to tank. it really sounds like temp sensors...
-
Had these symptoms with ej 22. Would pinch fuel line when hot so no fuel pressure. Ended up replacing the fuel reglator and one injector. Seemed to be flooding. Helped, but what it ended up being was both temp sensors. i agree with the earlier reply. They fake the engine and can flood. Try the pinching inbound fuel line while someone starts. If it starts you are flooding. Fuel pressure reg or temp sensors. ECU last resort and only if you have a swap.

interswapping EA81 and EA82 struts !
machthree2 replied to jono's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Good Stuff.. I may try the early manual legacy 6 spring clutch disc. What Nissan model disc did you use? I know the intake manifolds exchange for the SPFI, but what else do I need to do to take the Hitachi carb off the EA81? This thread is going all over,,, Also, do you know what models of GL's and years have the same width cross member as the Brat, so I can start tracking down a power assist steering setup. Will put the rack on Phase 2 when I convert to the 2.2 ej, but wanted to put the new crossmember in when I do the 5 speed and Lift. I contemplating a 3 inch lift and 4 inch sub member drop. -
interswapping EA81 and EA82 struts !
machthree2 replied to jono's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I have heard the rumor that jono is referring to. I have also heard that the ea81 has two style flywheels (a thick one and a thinner one like the 82?) Maybe the ea81 came in two flavors? When we do this later in April, I'll have some reporting. We have the ea82 5 speed / my ea81 engine and a blown 81 spare, several flywheels/clutches/etc. and both Bell housings. I'll hope to shed some additional light on it unless someone has an answer. My friend with the parts attempted this marriage two years ago but couldn't remember why he couldn't make it work, and gave up. I hope it bolts up just like bratmans .. -
get out and ride her Cowboy ... Looks like fun.

interswapping EA81 and EA82 struts !

So, I found new gas shocks with adjustable cradle for the spring, like my stock oil shocks. Cross ref on Rock Auto. You say the legacy springs will fit the top and bottom ea81 Strut Mounts, and the height will work? Interesting. Don't want to go 5 lug and legacy knuckles. And yes, the cv boots on my Brat are shot and the angle even stock is so so. My friend does an extra inch on the drivetrain drop so 2 inch body and 3 inch drop. That's if Patrick will build it that way. I'm hoping that he lowers the rear controls with blocks as well, and not just a diff plate. I want to keep the diff plate on the mustache bar. I'm getting a 5 speed and dual EA82 drive shaft, so I'll need to lower that center mount too. Don't have the bread to get a custom driveshaft made... :/ Lastly, I followed a post on the 5 speed convert and hook up to the EA81. You say do Ea82 throwout, fly, disc, and PP? is that correct? Thanks for all the great post ... Thanks Gloyale. -
interswapping EA81 and EA82 struts !
machthree2 replied to jono's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Thought I would jump in here as you guys have a wealth of knowledge. I'm getting ready to do a 2" lift on my 86 Brat. I just examined the stock struts and they have an inch adjustment for lift. I know they are not that great but I'm not doing heavy 4 wheelin. So, I think I will net 3" lift front and 2" in back with the kit and the strut adjustment. That is what I'm looking for for my 25-27 in tires on 15 inch pugs. Is there a heavier spring that I can sub in to the strut without breakin the bank? I'm putting a front custom push bar and winch mount on the front that is somewhat heavy, and later an EJ motor in. I've heard of King springs but would prefer a pick an pull substitute. Any advice? Regards -
Cool rack. DITO on the Subaru cool factor. I see new Toyota FJ 's every day, with all the lights and racks .... and $400 car payments and no scratches.

Replaced the rear shocks this evening...
machthree2 replied to 83hockeywagon's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Are gen 2 86 brat struts the same as gl wagon? ea81? if so, any suggestions on alternate springs and where can i find shocks? i here they are hard to find? Mine are super collapsed? -
Absolutely amazing Brat. Nice owner too. You should put it in a Red Bull commercial.
-
Nice ride... Have a blast. You will have fun working on the Brat. Subarus are super easy. If you don't have emissions, consider a weber carb upgrade. Lots of great support here on the forum. I just got mine and have been tinkering every other night. Enjoy.

Opinons wanted 5spd D/R or AWD in 85 Brat EJ Swap
machthree2 replied to 2manetoys's topic in Subaru Retrofitting
i checked out the link to the ebay brat example. The coolest thing about this whole gen1,2,3 subaru stuff is the cars can sports cars, off- roaders, sedans, sleepers, economy cars, cheap to build and drive.. That's the allure. The ej conversion and lowering, sway bars, strut mods, are the easiest way to emulate a 60's sports car feel. without a ton of undercarriage work, 2wd will get you most of what you are seeking for daily driving (not rally car on dirt.) i think 4wd on dry pavement is a waste of time unless your sportin 300 hp or on the track. Just my opinion guys. i think the whole idea of legacy undercarriage is the best idea (especially in Colorado), but the effort, for payback, would be a phase 2 if i'm up against an ej conversion anyway. -
Have to think about this one ? ... Your saying that the DIFF drop would push it back? I won't really have a opinion until I lift mine next month. Does the Lift kit with drop lower the position on the control arms mounts ..

Makes sense ... I hoping he was turning it into a low rider with over-sized rims haha... thanks.

yep.. called wheel spacers. they go between the wheel and hub. i have 5 mm on my loyale when i run my 205/55/r16 mine used to rub when peeps in the back seat. if interested i'll send picture.
