Nope, no timing belts. I will do some research, but it sounds as if this might be a bit more involved than my skill level allows. I used to have a Honda element in which the starter died. This involved removing the front half of the engine and components to change out. It was located behind the intake manifold. -

I will check this out. I haven't done the searching yet, but how hard and what is involved in replacing the gasket if it is in fact bad? Is this something I should tackle with moderate mechanic skills? I have never replaced one and haven't seen it done. I am not scared of doing this if it can in fact be done in a driveway. -

2004 outback with approx. 150K miles. The problem is, I never know when there is a problem until there is a problem. We go in different directions for work and get home at different times. When we go somewhere, its in my car (not a fan of her driving skills). If the heads were in fact leaking, shouldn't there be something evident in the oil? Like I said, I checked the oil and nothing at all is showing up. -
My wife's car-she tells me that the car is running hot. I check it out and the primary fan is dead. Relays and fuses are all good. I replace it and everything is good for a bit. Then it starts getting hot again. I replace the thermostat this time. I didn't realize that there would be issues with using an AutoZone thermo. Thermostat worked good but the car is starting to get hot again. I will replace the thermostat with one from Subaru this afternoon. The reason I went with AutoZone is the fact that there weren't any dealerships close that I could have gone to to purchase an OE exact. The last time she told me that it was hot, I checked the radiator and it was low on coolant. I am assuming that it is low due to the car getting hot. I filled it and checked the dipstick to look at the oil and it looks good. Am I heading in the right direction with an OE exact thermostat? Any other ideas? Fans work great now, no coolant in the driveway.

P0464 Code
Zoom replied to Zoom's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVX
Is there any way to tell which one is which? Which one is bad, if it is bad? I will check and clean the connectors first but was just curious as to figure out which one is bad. Unfortunately, I need to clear this code to get her car inspected. I just found out that it is overdue. Thank you so much for your help and responses. -
Sub-fan

The relays are good. I disconnected the drivers side fan and connected it to a battery source and got nothing. I am thinking that the fan is bad. Does this sound right? -
Sub-fan

Ok. The relay information that I had read online by someone was much more confusing than reality. The main and sub fan relays are clearly marked. The fuses for both fans are intact and good. Now I need to determine if the relays are the problem or if it is the fan motor. The problem she was having is that the driver's side (main??) fan is not engaging at hotter temps with the AC on. The passenger fan does work and runs. Driving down the road the car is fine, the problem comes in when she is idling for extended periods; i.e. traffic, drive thrus, etc. Can someone explain (dummified for me) how to test the relays? I mean step by step. If it is the relay or even the motor for that matter, it is going to be difficult to get the parts as the only dealerships are on the opposite side of town now (Houston is pretty big) and supply houses don't carry these parts. -
I have been doing some research today trying to figure some issues with the wife's car. She has a 2004 Outback and the sub-fan is not operating. From what I can tell, it would be a matter of three possibilities. One, the easiest, a blown fuse. Two, a bad relay. Three, a bad fan. I have been trying to find pictures, directions, etc. on which relay this could possibly be. I don't have the car in front of me at the moment, but from what I understand, there are four relays in this enclosure, but no one is sure which relay could be the culprit. Is there someone that could share a photo of which relay it could possibly be instead of checking each one? I appreciate any help on this that I could get in steering me in the right direction.
