  1. https://treasure.craigslist.org/cto/d/2004-subaru-forester-xs-for/6692325821.html $1000 for a whole forester with a running engine. car was in a crash. perfect donor. do the HG/timing while it moves over.
  2. make sure the number on your trans and the donor is the same. Car-part.com will often have them in the description field. For example, your trans in your original comment is a TZ1A4ZCCBA. make sure the replacement is to....and life is good.
  3. There are two on car-part.com 100-139 miles away from you. On is $350, the other is $300. That is about the right price. Keep your core till it is done and change the spin off filter and drain and fill the donor. Change the rear main if you can while in there. Some guys say no need, but I always do. Sometimes they want a core charge, other times no. Ask ahead of time. Should be a 60-90 day warranty. I usually pick it up and try to talk them out of it.
  4. I use a gasket. Regardless, if the gasket is the same part number, it is the same shape on the block so the 07 pan can move to the older block because it needs to based on the exhaust differences on the 07.
  5. It looks like the oil pans are different on the motors. Seems like I have to use the pan from 07. Gaskets are the same. I wonder about the oil pick up tube in the pan if they are the same or if I need the 07 one. Anyone have any idea. The 01 engine is still in the car.
  6. I hate that. Why on earth would they pluck those off the trans? Lends credence to the keep the core until you are done with the job thread though. Best of luck.
  7. I just bought a 07 wagon. The lower end is bad, but the heads and timing appear ok. Will swap a 2000 block in and do the 07 heads, intake timing etc.
  8. I would pay the core, grab any needed parts from your old one, put in the new one and recycle your own core at a local scrap yard and save the gas and windshield time. You can also ask them to waive the core. They do sometimes.
  9. Toadspit, take the core back after the swap unless it is a cash flow issue. Hard to say what parts you might want off the old one first. Once it is in their hands, it is impossible to grab what you might need.
  10. cool, so i take the 2000-2005 block, install 07 heads, 07 intake, cam and crank and mcgiver the pcv and it works like a charm.
  11. pay the core fee and keep your trans until after the swap. I always seem to end up grabbing something part wise off the donor. If you are all done, and want to take the core back after and it won't cost you too much in time or fuel, then take the core back after you are complete. That is what I usually do.
  12. sorry, a bit confused on this. So, ocei77, he can take 07 heads and put them on the 2000 block with the 2000 intake?? or does he need the 07 intake on the 2000 block also?
  13. I think that is too much for that job as well. Shop around. Also, why do you need new calipers? My shop usually takes them off and either repairs,or cleans them , lubricates and reinstall them if they are safe.
  14. i favor finding a running unit on a bad body. easier to find one of those in the midwest rust belt.
  15. you can get a starter from car-part.com. They are way plentiful. I have two spare, but it will be cheaper to just get on local to you.
  16. after re-reading, if it turns over and doesn't start, my comment is more valid. If no crank, then starter is probably a better place to look into.
  17. Crank or cam position sensor. No start after a hot soak is the classic failure pattern for that type of sensor. It won't throw a code because the engine has to be running for the code to be stored. You can diagnose it for certain by measuring the signal with a voltmeter or oscilloscope when it's not starting.
