  1. I have a hard starting problem on a 2.2 swap we just did. Here is some history: 96 outback wagon, automatic, bad 2.5 engine, 2 cylinders burning oil and then lost a pulley and kabam....bad engine found 95 2.2 automatic bad body, good engine ran the 2.2, it ran well even after having sat for about 6 months pulled the 2.5 out of the 96, pulled the 95 2.2 out and gave it the new head gasket, timing belt, water pump, pulley set off ebay. Even had to replace the plastic timing cover as both were trashed. Gave the dealer the vin off the 95 car with the 2.2, go the new cover put it all back together. Had a helluva time gettign the motor to start. Finally When we started the car, it smoked for like an hour. We thought, that old motor must have been burning a ton of oil and it was deposited in the exhaust system. Now it starts hard. I serched on hard start and came up with a list to consider. We did swap the temp Sensor off the 2.5 and it did not make a difference. Here is my list from the search: change Crank and or cam position sensor check for intake vacuum leaks or carbon deposits in intake manifold Temperature sensor- there are two, some people reported that the temp sensor for the dash was replaced in instead of the one for the engine. Old or new plugs in engine can cause a hard start. old tank of gas will cause a hard start if it has been sitting too long check fuel volume and pressure when car is stone cold to see if it is a fuel pressure regulator issue. swap coil from other motor leaky injectors flooding engine – donor engine did sit for a bit battery is bad bad fuel filter over advance timing car is just a piece of s.... and should be crushed- just kidding Check the Idle air control motor. It may need to be cleaned out. any other obvious or not so obvious ideas are welcome. Thanks in advance!!!
  2. Sundance, I have the same thing going on. What was your fix back in March?
  3. Go for it. The four has plenty of power. I have one of each. Yeah the 6 has more punch, but the four is plenty good.
  4. I did the exact swap and it worked like a charm. There is lots of threads on this. The 95 automatic 2.2 is a sweet swap for your application.
  5. http://car-part.com/ Try this link. Makes for a fast search. try craig's list also.
  6. I have a used 95 auto trans for a front wheel drive. It has 116 K on it and it shifts smooth. Just came out of donor car Friday. Are you interested?
  7. I appreciate the response fairtax4me. I did search and couldn't find what I was looking for. The EGR was the main concern. I didn't think the 90-94's had one and it seems that if I install a 95 2.2 intake with an EGR on the 90-92 without an EGR, it should plug and play into the 96 outback automatic with a bad 2.5. Can anyone confirm? The car is sitting right now waiting for an engine.
  8. I did one. A 95 automatic into a 98 forester with a bad engine. ran great afterwards.
  9. Let me clarify...I want to take the 2.2 engine from a 91-94 legacy and install it into a 96 outback that has a bad 2.5 with an automatic trans. I heard I should just be able to switch the intake from a 95 2.2 with an egr onto the 2.2 engine from a 91-94 legacy. Any sensors or anthing else I need to mess with?
  10. Can I take a 2.2 automatic from 91-94 legacy and drop it in a 96 outback automatic? I had planned on removing the original 2.2 intake manifold and replace with a 2.2 intake manifold with an EGR to the 91-94 2.2. Any problems that anyone can foresee with this?
  11. Try a little graphite powder in the ignition cylinder. It comes in a little plastic bottle that you can squeeze a small amount into the cylinder. Some guys spray a small amount of wd-40 if that doesn't work, but I would try the grpahite powder first.
  12. I have taken all my subaru's to advance auto on 35th and state. Talk to Tony 414-342-3407 and tell them that Peter referred you and they will take good care of you. They have done 5 HG jobs for me and a couple of wierd tranny issues, bearings, timing belts all sorts of stuff. New heads a couple of times.
  13. Lots of extra work in my opinion. Just drop in a 95 2.2 and you will be lot happier. It is a direct plug and play. Do a search on this and you see what I mean.
  14. You are a good candidate for a 1995 2.2 transplant. Slips right in. Look it up in the forum. Lots of information on the swap. They are less money and plenty available. A better engine many say. I have done a couple and they have gone well.
  15. If you get stumped, I have had lots of subaru's worked on at Advance Auto in Milwaukee. They a single Mom and Pop kind of shop at 35th and state. Not fancy, but they get it done for a fair price. Good honest people. Ask for Tony 414-342-1047. They are working on a 96 outback for me now with a bad engine that I found for $500. Best of luck to you.
  16. I have a 2000 and a 2002 outback wagon. On my 2002 , when I shift from park to drive, I have indication via the dash and my shift indicator between the front seats also light up to display which gear I am in. On the 2000, I get gear indication at the dash but not at the shift between the front seats. Is the shift light just burned out or did it never light up? If it is burned out, how easy is it to replace? Thanks in advance
  17. You have lots of options. I would take the motor out, fix the headgaskets and put her back in if she didn't have 172K on the clock. I did one at 162 and one at 137 and the one that had 162 ended up wearing out before the headgaskets. I am a big fan of the 2.5 to 2.2 swap. 95 is really an easy swap and well documented here on the site. You don't notice much of a HP difference in my opinion. Maybe you take the 2.5 out, put a 2.2 in and eventually you stumble across a subie with a bad motor for a song and you make some $$$. Good luck!
