  1. Subaru is the new Volvo in my mind and has been for quite some time. They are gret in snow and bad weather are easy to work on and parts are available and affordable. I don't claim to be an expert, but over the years,I have had 3-240's and an 850. On the Subaru side, we have had an 86 XT, 2-95's Legacy's, 2-96 Outbacks, still have the 98 Forester and an 02 Outback LL Bean Wagon. The 240's were pretty indestructable except for all of the electrical relays and being prone to rust, but my 850 was a great car. It did have lots of little things at the end though. What killed it for me was the Volvo dealers. In the early days, it was allways a $500 a trip to the dealer. After I wised up, my local mechanic worked on it and we did all of the regular maintenance. Occasionally I would take it in to the dealer for something out of the ordinary. They would turn off the service light then upon presenting some proof or understanding that the work was performed. The last time I took it there, they refused to turn off the Serice light and were just a bunch of pricks about it. That really ticked me off. My wife and I looked hard at the models available last year and really felt that the V70 was the only viable model for us. The 60 was too small, the 80 too big and grey haired for us. In the end,the price tag and the maintenance record on the V70 that really made me step back though. In the end, I sold one of the 96 outbacks, upgraded to the 02 Bean and bought her a 06 Nissan Altima. It almost appears that after Ford bought Volvo, I think they have gone down the tubes. I hear about lots more repair issues from my friends that have them and they all eye up my 02 LL Bean wagon and ask, How do you like that? Just my 2 cents.
  2. $600 Tops. If you can't drive it, there might be more surprises in store for you once you get it running.
  3. jump it, start and let it charge up a bit and then try this. http://www.cars101.com/subaru/keyless.html#code%20alarm Good luck!
  4. I think only time will tell on the timing chain versus belt saga, but I do like my 02 LL Bean versus my my 2.2 and 2.5 legacy's and outbacks----all but the seats. I think the leather seats in the 02 LL Bean models are too hard. I liked my cloth seats better. Overall they are softer, and warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer. I like the sunroofs, weather station band on the radio etc. Also, better cupholders for my java additiction.
  5. Having a blast with my new 02 H6 in the snow as well. We have 18' more than nornal already for the month. When my snowblower cools down, the Subie warms up. BAOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!
  6. I'd keep it and work out the bugs. Switch cars with her perhaps while this gets done. I'd hate to trade a car out that I still owe on. Come to think of it, I never owe an any car I have, but I gave up on cars I can't pay cash for.
  7. The shop I go to has done 4 HG's and a 2.2 transplant for me. It is in Milw though. If interested, I can forward you the info. I get the parts and bring them in and they do straight labor.
  8. 95 2.2 leak on one side at 135K sold to sister after fix 96 2.5 at 152K 96 2.5 at 158K 98 2.5 at 129K (motor puked previous owner) replaced with 2.2 I look for them with bad HG's and buy them cheap enough and fix them and drive em .........obviously not all at once.
  9. The 2.5 has more guts than the 2.2, but it is not that noticable. Maybe when you are on the entrance ramp of the highway or in the mountains you would notice. The reason I recommend the 2.2 in this case is that the 2.5's are hard to find at what I feel is a fair price.
  10. DO a search on the 2.5/2.2 swap. It is well documented. The 95 2.2 is a really clean swap and requires very little change.
  11. That is a good deal. I dropped a 2.2 in mine that had a blown motor. I put a 95 2.2 in and it saved me a pack of dough versus the 2.5 replacement. Good luck!
  12. I pulled this off the car talk web site of mechanics other people in the area recomennded and they work on Subies. Import Motors 908 Morse Avenue , Schaumburg, IL 60193 847-895-3127 Good luck!
  13. Thanks for the info on the 95-96 not working out. It saves me a stupid move. Looks like the 99 2.2 or a different 2.5 will have to do.
  14. After searching the swaps, it looks like a 99 2.2l is the easiest best swap for a 2000 Forester with a manual. Something about the 99 2.2 being a phase II by then, but not much more info than that. Does anyone else have an opinion? How much more work is it on a 95 or 96 2.2 manual?
  15. Have a bad engine in a 2000 forester with a manual. What is the best 2.2 engine swap for this? I did put a 95 2.2 into my 98 Forester, but that was an automatic. Thanks for the help in advance.
  16. Great to hear that people are having good luck with them. I just bought an 02 LL Bean and relly like it. Did they ever change the timing chain on those higher mileage H6's?
  17. Did you make sure the metal tubes near the intake the vac lines hook into are clear and clean? That was my problem on one of my 2.5's. On the other, I had that damn p0400 on and off for months until I finaly blew a little glob of oil out of the vacum line near the inline filter that gets rid of condensation. Are you sure the part you put near the strut tower is know good. That caused a CEL and rough shifts on my 95 2.2 for almost 6 months. Good luck!
  18. I have a power steering pump. It came off a 2.5 98 Forester. I did a conversion from a 2.5 to a 2.2 and the 2.2 came with one just the same so I took it off the 2.5 motor before recycling it. PM me if you still need it.
  19. I have a good mechanic up here in Milwaukee that has done 3 2.5 headgaskets and one 2.5 to 2.2 swap into a forester. They are not expensive, nor do they have a fnacy place, but they do solid work. Advanced Automotive 414-342-3407
  20. I bought an 02 LL Bean two weeks ago and absolutley love it. It does have a heavier feel with the heavier H6 up front, but it is a rocket compared to the 2.5. Good luck getting yours!
  21. I got one from this company in Minneapolis, but they shipped out of RI. I bet shipping would be less for you. What year are you looking for? I needed a 95 auto for a bad 98 forester 2.5. It was an easy swap. 1995 Legacy 2.2l engine 71k miles out of automatic transmission vehicle with a 40 day warranty. $370 for engine $125 shipping to commercial address Starter, power steering pump and lines included in on price. Thanks, Jamie Johnson 1-866-554-PART (7278)
  22. Great story! I bet it will hold......until you loan it out again. No good deed goes unpunished! Just kidding.
