  1. Just bought an 02 Outback Wagon LL Lean Edition with 69K in almost mint condition. Sold my 96 with 164K and have been driving the 02 all week. What a joy to drive! The H6 is just a blast. Definately is a rocket compared to the 2.5. It does feel a little heavier in the front end, but what a fun ride. Loved my wife's XT coupe, my 2 95's, my 2- 96's my 98 Forester, but this is just sweet. Interested to hear from others with the H6.
  2. Sewoolf: I guess I would worry less about what your car is worth and instead focus on finding a good mechanic to fix your subie now that you have decided someone other than you will do the work. I can't blame you, I hired out three HG jobs just because I don't have the time to do them. I have found as others have on this board that if you buy quality subie parts wholesale, that saves on the cost of the repair as well. Good luck!
  3. I paid about $340 shipping included for my 95 2.2 with about 77K on it. If yo have it delivered to a business with a pallet lift of some sort, it will cost less. Good luck.
  4. It was not covered as the warranty was up in Feb of this year. I walked as the guy would not budge on price ...............and I found a much nicer 02 outback LL Bean yesterday and bought it. Thanks for all the help. Now I guess my 96 Ouback is up for grabs.
  5. The warranty says it is 3/36 bumper to bumper and 6/60 for the powertrain. Seems like the engine should fall into the powertrain area wouldn't you think.....??? Anybody have experience with this? It is a private party sale.
  6. I was looking at a 02 Outback today with under 50K on the odometer. The car looked and drove nice, but after having two 96's with the HG issue, I checked the overflow tank and I'll be damned if I didn't see a few bubbles faint here and there. Could this be a HG failure at this early or is there any other reason that this could happen? The car is not overheating and has no fliud leaks of any type. I would appreciate your opinions as I am interested in this car.
  7. The swap works great. I did it on my 98 Forester. Donor egine was a 95 automatic. The flywheel needs to be transferred from the 2.5 to the 2.2 also. No egr problems if you had an automatic 2.5 in there and the new motor is automatic also. Look at all the other recommeded things to replace while the motor is out, because now is the time when she is out of there. I think if you did a search on HG repair, there is a list out there, like Timing belt, seperator plate, water pump, oil pump seals, plugs, water pump etc.... Good luck!
  8. In Wisconsin, Advance Auto Parts will read the codes for free.
  9. If there is a HG problem with the car, it might have bubbles in the overflow tank. It might not overheat yet, but the bubbles are the beginning for sure. It might also have black gunk floating within or on the surface of the overflow tank. If it has overheated numberous times, then you might have warped heads. Torque Bind is another conern. Take it to a parking lot and drive in figure 8's slow and if there is a shudder or it feels like resistance from any of the wheels, then that is a bit of a major deal. Research both on this forum and you will get the idea. A good way to make sure that you come out OK is to appraise the car with Edmunds, Kelley and then your local market, subtract a HG job and any other work that is needed and that is what I would pay for the car. Good luck. I have fixed three of these and had no repeat offenders so far.
  10. I just did the 2.2 swap on my 98 Forester and used the 95 2.2 automatic and it went in great. The motor had 71 K on it an runs great. I used the engine overhaul kit from Subaru and did the H2o pump, spark plugs, timing belt, seperator plate gig while the engine was out. The flywheel has to come off the 2.5 and onto the 2.2. Other than that, it was a pretty clean swap. Is the 99 much different than the 98? As a reference point, the Motor was $395 inluding shipping.
  11. I've got a good mechanice in Milwaukee that has done 3 HG jobs for me and a 2.5 to 2.2 swap. He is priced right and knows subies, but is 1 hour away from you. Let me know if you want the name.
  12. Try him. He helped me on a number of things so far. Jamie Johnson 1-866-554-PART (7278) jamie@carpartsdirectllc.com www.carpartsdirectllc.com
  13. Holly Fruedian slip! That is correct. Do not connect them. They caused my lights to start flashing. Good luck.
  14. I just had the same thing happen to me on my 98 Forester. Nothing works but this. Turn the key on but no start and find a little black button under the dash to the left of the wheel and press it with the key on. Your locks should cycle up and down 3 times. Turn the key off and you are done with the lights on and off 30 times and then off. Some Foresters have the button recessed in a circular switch. Mine was just a little black button attached to the wiring near the two green plugs which you DO SHOULD CONNECT!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Try that.
  15. I just bought a 95 2.2 with 71K on the clock and it was $495 with shiping from Jamie at carpartsdirect. It runs great and he was easy to deal with. I did all the seals, timing belt, etc all the standard stuff you do when the engine is out and I am very happy with it so far. Might be cheaper long term than rebuilding a 2.2 with over 230,000. Try him if you like. Jamie Johnson 1-866-554-PART (7278) jamie@carpartsdirectllc.com www.carpartsdirectllc.com CCR is great too.
  16. That was my fix. Note to self, don't plug in stuff if you don't know what they do. Also, my button to reset was not in a recessed ring, it was just a small black button at the end of some wiring up in the left kick panel area.
  17. That was it. The Air bag light is still on, but the flashing dash and emergency lights are off. No small animal sacrifice needed, but I was on one foot.
  18. Thanks sea#3. This is what I need to do. I don't have a key FOB. I wonder if I could add one easily later. Open the drivers door, turn ignition to on, press and *hold programming button*under dashboard. After 15 seconds the doors will cycle 3 times. Do not relase the programming button. Press lock button on remote if you have one. Locks will cycle 1 time. Exit programming mode by realsing button under dash and turn key to off. This button must be pressed if you are programming remotes or if the battery was disconnected and the lights were already flashing.
  19. absolutely. I think I found my answer in link 53433. It sounds like the keyless entry got confused and that I need to: Open the drivers door, turn ignition to on, press and *hold programming button*under dashboard.
  20. OK, I am a dip************. I thought that this was my airbag problem on my 98 Forester and connected them. Now I have the clock above the RV mirror and the information display (temp, barometer, compass and emergency flashers ) turn on for 30 flashes. Then they turn off and repeat the cycle. Does anybody know how to make this stop? I have a ODBII scanner and have tried everything to get it to clear. I had the battery unplugged for about two hours also. Help?
  21. I see the connector to test, but I also saw a green plug under the dash left of the steering wheel. It was not connected and I thought that it should be per other Air bag posts. I had disconnected the battery for about an hour at this point. I re-connected the green plug and started it up. The Air bag light did not turn off and now there is a clicking sound coming form the same area as the green plug and interestingly enough, the clock above the RV mirror, and temp/barometer compass goes from bright to normal coinciding with the clicking noise. Anybody know what the hell I did? I did have a check engine light when the green plug was connected, but it went away after the green plug was disconnected. I have disconnected the battery again and will see if that clears it up, but how wierd was that? Anybody know what this means when the clock and info display does this? It is also making the emergency lights flash through an identical sequence. They are on flashing and then off for a while. Then, they come back on. Damit, I shoudl have read SEA#3;s post a little slower. He mentioned that they were not connected. Maybe this all relates to the AIR bag problem? :-\
  22. I will try the battery disconnect in the AM and see if that works. Next step will be the dealer I think if that doesn't work.
