Clock issues?

Bummer, I just pulled mine out and resoldered it and it did not fire up. Not a big deal, have a clock on the radio, but I was hoping. -
Thanks to everyone for help and confirmation of putting in a 2.2 into my Forester. The transplant was a success! For those who didn't see the posts from a month ago, I purchased a 98 Forester automatic that had about 128,00 miles with a cooked 2.5 engine. Couldn't find a reasonably priced 2.5 replacement, so I put in a 1995 automatic 71,000 mile 2.2. The Forester also had all the signs of a bad clock spring, no cruise, no horn and Air bag light on. The engine went in great, the clock spring did to and fixed the cruise and horn, but the Air bag dash light is still on. Any ideas anyone? Thanks

CCR Engines?

I considered them and think highly of them, but ending up using these guys because I intend upon keeping the car for a shorter period of time. The engine went in great and runs well. Lots less too. I could have paid less for a 2.2, but they were not as nice as this one. This was a 2.5 to 2.2 conversion on a 98 Forester. Jamie was easy to deal with and the engine showed up on time in one piece. I attached his contact info for you if you are interested. Here are the details on the engine: 1995 Legacy 2.2l engine 71k miles out of automatic transmission vehicle with a 40 day warranty. $370 for engine $125 shipping to commercial address Starter, power steering pump and lines included in on price. 99 Forester

I would price it at street value and then subtract the real cost of a HG repair $1200-$1400 and call it a day. Tell the next person, for the 1200-1400, replace the timing belt, all engine seals and oil pump, water pump, seperator plate and plugs as well. The engine comes out for this procedure.....oh yeah and then back in again. A 2.2 is not a bad idea if the 2.5 engine is toast. If the 2.5 still runs strong and is under 150k, I'd recommned the next guy do the HG work over the swap. My 2 cents. -
None of this sounds very good. Oil in the engine is good-no oil-bad! Bubbles in the coolant overflow tank is pretty solid evindence that you have at least one bad HG. A high pitch noise could be bad bearings or more as it sounds like there was no oil in the engine. Sounds like it might be time to tranplant a new one or explore other options. Good luck to your buddy.

I just got my hands on a low mileage 1995 2.2 automatic and plan on putting it in my newly acquired 98 Forester. After reviewing the links on this swap, I want to detail the steps and see if anybody has any corrections or suggestions/additions that I missed to my plan. 1. Remove bad(overheated-red hot) 2.5 engine 2. once new 2.2 received-use engine overhaul gasket set to reseal new engine. 3. install new h20 pump, timing belt and spark plugs 4. new metal seperator plate before reinstall 5. take flywheel from 2.5 and install it on 2.2 motor 6. re-use AC and alternator from 2.5 and resue 2.5 AC bracket on 2.2 motor 7. reuse power steering lines (and power steering pump????)from 2.2 donor 8. reinstall 2.2 into car 9. drink a cold beer or maybe several when car runs

This is what I found on the legality of the whole thing. I was more interested in hearing if anyone had done one. Rules regulating engine swapping are not make/model specific. The simple rule is that a vehicle must have all emissions components that were present when it was manufactured, which may include: PCV - positive crankcase ventilation ACL - air cleaner (thermostatic air cleaner) AIS - secondary air injection EGR - exhaust gas recirculation EVAP - evaporative emission CAT - catalytic convertor SPK - spark control FR - fillpipe restrictor O2S - oxygen sensor

I just bought a 98 Forester 2.5 DOHC automatic with what I thought was Timing belt failure with bent valves, but it turns out the knuckelhead actually drove it in an overheated state for about 25 miles until it just burned up. My trusted mechanic who has done about 3 other subaru's like this took it out of the car and took a look at it and said--- time for new motor. I have looked for another 2.5, but they are quite pricey. I found a local 95 2.2 from an automatic and have researched the threads and it appears that it is a pretty clean swap once the flywheel is swapped. Any red flags from any of you on this plan? I can get the 2.2 with about 90k on it for $400.00 with a 30 day warranty. I need to decide Monday if you all can chime in, I would appreciate it.

Thanks Nipper. The Air bag is also not working and that appears to be a clock spring symptom as well. I pick this up tomorrow---with a car trailer. The t-belt or water pump broke and caused unknown damage so this will be a bit of a science project. Does anyone have the part number for the clock spring?

I believe that the 98 Forester is a DOHC. Can anyone confirm? Also, I may have to replace the engine. Can I put in a 95 automatic 2.2 in this 98 Forester automatic? Another question. It looks like the horn, cruse control, heated seats, and electric mirrors don't work. I saw thread that stated that the clock spring could be the problem ffor some of this. Any opinions on this?
