  1. I just used the overhaul gasket fit from first subaru as well and it worked out great. No chasing for the right gasket and no leaks. I wouldn't cut corners on the parts- it's the labor or your time that will get you in the end.
  2. On the rear door latch, wd 40 the handle above the license plate and work it back and forth until the handle starts working again. This is really common. Good luck on the gaskets.
  3. Congrats. Excellent information here Kevin in post 18 talked about a custom bracket that needed to be built. Does anyone know what he is referring to? I am going to take the plunge with one of these shortly.
  4. I'd put an engine like this in. See ebay item # 8046608500. This is a DOHC, but just an example of what you can find. Or find a used 2.2. Nothing against CCR, I think they are great, but it is a 98. Just my two cents.
  5. I have had 2 95's with the 2.2 motor and just bought a 96 OB with a know HG issue. Once repaired with the new HG kit, it is my opinion that the 96 will be fine for quite some time. It had 152 K on the motor when it went bad. The 2.2 is a more reliable motor, that is a fact. If I were in your shoes, I would find a decent 95 or 96 2.2 Legacy sedan or wagon and ride of into the sunset.
  6. I used Rock Auto for a bunch of misc parts and thought their prices and web interface was pretty good. Delivery was good as well Here is the folow up email they sent me extending a 5% diso************. Feel free to use it. I also used 1stsubaru recently as well. If you call 1stsubaru.com, they walk you through it and give you a good discount on genuine subaru parts. If you supply your VIN, they always get it right too. 7. It could likely be the beginning of a HG issue. Coolant in oil is never good. Do you have any bubbles coming out of the rubber tube in the overflow tank? Also, If the oil is milky, coolant and oil are mixing. Again not good. What is the year and type of subaru you have?
  8. You are one lucky guy. I heard on the news today that 17 cars a day get ripped off and generally chopped. To get yours back in one piece is amazing.
  9. I had a 95 2.2 automatic and a 95 2.2 manual. The automatic I think I had the same error, and I replaced the pressure sensor marked #4 in the previous usmb link. The manual 2.2 didn't even have a pressure sensor near the strut tower. Try a new spark plug, or wire to isolate the bad cylinder perhaps.
  10. Check out this thread for a decent picture of under the hood http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=51974&highlight=egr+solenoid This link talks about differences between a MAP and a MAF http://www.cobbtuning.com/tech/airflow/ engine type and year are kind of important. If you need a MAF, I have a used one listed in the classified area. Good luck!
  11. I had two 95's with 2.2's One automatic and one manual I sold one to my sister with 141,000 and the automatic with 146,000to a subie lover who answered the ad for the other. Both ran great. My sisters blows a little oil though when starting up. Other than that, 30 mpg still she reports. My 2.5 engine has 152,000, but has recently been out of the car for a HG repair. I'll bet both 2.2's won't suffer the same fate.
  12. ditto to what color blind said. I just did a 96 OB with the same exact behavior. Mine had 152k. When they pulled the engine and looked at the heads and cylinder walls, my mechanic was amazed at the lack of wear in general. It is running great now. I would get the gasket kit from 1st subaru parts. They provide genuine parts at a discount. While it was out, we did the timing belt, water pump, seperator plate, cam seals ......you get the idea. It should be about $1200-$1800. Make sure you flush the radiator out well also. Good luck!
  13. Thanks for all of the great info everybody. Total HG job with timing belt, hoses, belts, water pump, all seals and oil seperator was $1300 with labor and parts. Hopefully it lasts a long time.
  14. I agree with rweddy. If you find a nice subie and you can get it under market(my definition here would be market value minus $1,200 for the potential HG repair) pull the trigger. They are good cars and if you have to make the reapir then you do, if not store the green. I just bought one with a know HG that went at 150k and had the repair done. Hell, many other brands of cars are kaput at 150k.
  15. Thanks to all the great comments. The engine is back in already and I should get it back Tuesday. I wasn't able to get a new oil pump before it went back in though. How much of a job is it later?
  16. BTW, the 1st subaru gasket engine overhaul kit does not include the sperator plate. The replacement was 12.00 and it was aluminum.
  17. The engine was pulled today and it was in pretty good shape. He said itwas in much better condition than most other engines he works on with that many clicks. No evidence or oil consumption or head warp. Tommorow or Monday it should be finished.
  18. I understand now. Take it out and while out replace rear crankshaft oil seal, seperator plate, and the plate o-ring. Does anybody know if the 1stsubaru overhaul gasket set has all of this in it?
  19. It is an automatic. So either way is OK. From a labor perspective, do you think more time with the engine in or out?
  20. I Just bought a 96 Outback with 152K knowing that it had a Head Gasket problem, but the price was right. My local garage does great work and for a reasonable rate. They quoted $600-800 labor and just use my parts. While the HG repair is made, I am going to have the H20 pump done, timing belt, plugs, hoses, accessory belt, serpentine belt and cam seals done as well. Anything else recommended while this is all happening. I was going to get the 1st subaru engine overhaul kit with the gaskets and seals all included. Oil change and coolant also will happen after the HG reapir. Car has a new radiator. Poll time, will it take less time to pull the motor or leave it in with all of this happening?
