I bought an Outback that sounded land behaved like that once and it was a broken short shaft I think they call it. It is a short shaft that comes out of the trans and connects to the axle. It was a pretty cheap fix compared to a trans replacement. I think this is a picture of it on the left. A junk yard will have tons of them.

I picked up a 2001 Subaru legacy sedan, automatic today. It has hard start, warm or cold, harder at cold, significant engine hesitation, backfires, and huge loss of power. Barely made it the 30 miles back to my favorite shop. No check engine at start, but code for front o2 sensor once I arrives and not long after I was on the road. Car recently has had a new exhaust from engine to the back muffler. All new o2 and converters. At idle seems to run decent, when I work the throttle at the engine, it rev's, but misses if I give it too much gas. My gut is telling me fuel is the problem, but looking for ideas I might have missed. I was thinking fouled plugs maybe, bad fuel filter, bad fuel pump, bad o2 sensor out of box or ???????? Anybody else experience this?

Hit Craigslist in your area. there are usually some for sale within a hundred miles. Car-part.com is a god way to find some cross bars too. This one includes the cross bars , is for an 05 forester with bike attachments for $65.00. Not sure that is a fit. Just an example. https://milwaukee.craigslist.org/pts/d/new-berlin-subaru-forester-roof-rack/6847447096.html

That is only 16 mpg on a car that should get better than that. Are any check engine lights on or when was the last time you gave it a general tune like plugs etc. Older O2 sensors tend to use more fuel but not always pop a code.

I have a good running 95 2.2 with about 190K. I would probably do head gaskets, timing belt idlers etc while it it out of the car. -
I have had 95's, 97's 2000's & 2005, and have an outback 2014 3.6 and a Impreza 2018's. I liked the 90's cars, but they rode lower and not as well as the next gen for sure. Great vehicles though especially the 2.2 95 engine. The 2000-2004's were tanks. Great cars, my son is still driving my 02 LL Bean. Yeah, window regulators after 04 and interiors don't hold up like the earlier ones , but on the flip side, my 2014 has had oil changes, brakes an tires and I just crossed 60K. My wife's Impreza has 6K on it, so way to early to tell on that unit, but I still think they make a hell of a car. They are all under pressure to reduce weight and increase MPG and shorts cuts get taken by all of the car makers. In comparison, My Honda Odyssey at the office has had issues with the variable cylinder management and just under warranty had to have the rings and a piston replaced at 60k. They upgraded the computer firmware so it would kick in so much and foul the plugs. My KIA minivan at the office was decent but could not handle the Midwest ice and salt and started disintegrating around me. At 114K, it had to go. My neighbors corolla 2005 with 110k loves to burn oil and she is due for an engine replacement. Not to be a punch drinker, but I think you get my point.
