  1. Dang, it is a bitch to leave it in. If you have to do the HG, it is so much easier to wrench on with it out of the car. I would do the timing belt, water pump, all idlers, cam o rings etc while it is out as well. Send us pictures of your knuckles if you leave it in please. Just kidding.
  2. The rear diff uses gear oil 75w90 GL-5 and your user manual will tell you specifically what you need. Others will chime in on what brand they like best or a synthetic alternative, but I just use the standard gear oil.
  3. The outer tie rod and leaking trans lines would be my next go to. You can also try to very carefully tighten the valve covers to see if that helps. Usually not, but sometimes it helps while you put some other fires out. Rear diff is not a bad DIY job if you have some ramps. Make sure to have some power steering fluid in the car for quick top offs in the meantime. If you need to replace the rack, that is a pretty significant job- maybe $400-$600 if my memory serves me. Get a new or rebuilt rack. I bought a used one once and it was no better than the one I took out and it was a fairly time consuming job.
  4. change the oil separator plate from plastic to metal while you are in there too.
  5. 95 2.2 goes in a 98 forester easy as well. I have done 3-4 of these 95 2.2 into 96-99 outbacks. Not a 99 legacy though as that is gen ii
  6. I go to a battery place where they test the battery and confirm if the alt is charging it. Takes 5 minutes.
  7. I think $500 is too low and will piss him off. Offer him a fair price with the thought you might have to replace some stuff. A good inspection will reveal if there is immediate needs. Or find one that needs maybe a bigger repair for cheap and spend the $ to make it safe and right for your son. Either way, make you are not upside down on the car value in avg or good shape on edmunds or kbb and then what market value is for your area. Good luck! my 2 cents
  8. How low is the compression? It ran really well and the mileage was solid. Never noticed a problem and sold it as I had too many other projects. Others on the site here said no problem to the idea. Thanks for your input though.
  9. I put a 2000 block in an 07 with a bad block. Used the 07 heads, intake and oil pan. McGyvered the egr. Runs like a champ.
  10. I think that the block itself is pretty much the same for quite a few years and they are quite interchangeable. If my memory serves me, this has been hashed out well in the past and if you search out swaps on this site, I am pretty sure is already out there. The intake and heads will will vary year by year and whether the heads need to be egr come into play as well. If you are looking for a more specific answer, it would be best if you had a bit more specific question.
  11. They are different part numbers for sure. TZ1A4ZCCBA outback TZ1A3ZC2AA forester
  12. Use a hair dryer to heat up the rubber line if you are in a cold climate. It pulls apart easier that way. The hose replacement is easy. Just dig in and see where the where problem is. I had a blocked line one time that I blew clear from the front with a compressor. The connectors can clog or break and the hose gets old at the connection point and leaks. Get some hose connectors of the right size and some replacement hose and get her done! Good luck!
  13. I cross referenced it on rock auto and car-part for the one part I was looking for. It may be more years.
  14. No mincing of words GD. I love it. Couldn't agree more.
