That's funny I was just looking into doing the opposite. Built ej22 into early rx7. -
driving awd brat with no power steering??
lumpycam replied to lumpycam's topic in Subaru Retrofitting
Thanks for all the really good info everyone. It helped me decide that I don't need to mess with the manual steering. This will help with keeping the weight lower. I could even add power the other side of the steering wheel, Been awhile since I seen a Gym. -
ej22 230 grind in ej25/ej22 high comp. ported heads and long tube headers, I love it!!

It's not hard to put newer radiator in, Ea81 style only needs top holes drilled wider. The ea82 style has larger hoses and so does the ej style rads.Make sure you get fans with them or you will have to adapt them. So mostly all rad will fit with modification but I would choose an ea81 style (best fit). P.s You have an ea71 style radiator, just in case your not familiar with subytalk. Ea81 = '80 to '84 wagon and coupe dl/gl , '80 to '87 Hatchback, '82 to '87 Brat

driving awd brat with no power steering??
lumpycam replied to lumpycam's topic in Subaru Retrofitting
Hey Brian, This Brat is to be my shop truck.I got spoiled with the last one ,not really excited about driving a gutless suby anymore.Tell me about this last one you did? Next door to me (Rodger/Levi)? I hear of a large green wagon running in my territory, People locally ask me if its mine all the time. Later Thanks SubaruTex, I was hoping someone with actual experience would help out. P.S. anyone with experience on installing power steering on gen1 brat is welcome to add info . -
Does anyone know if legacy and newer r160 diffs all share the same ring gear bolt size? The reason I ask is I have a 4.44 diff with a modified Lsd and now I need 4.10 gears.I had to drill out the lsd to fit the 4.44 ring gear bolts. This will be installed in gen 1 Brat. Thanks for looking !

I am building another ej gen1 brat , this time it will be awd 5mt.I was wondering if manual steering would be too stiff for normal driving. It will also have an lsd in the rear end . ANY input will be appreciated.

Building the Exhaust, EJ22 -> EA71 Brat Swap
lumpycam replied to esteveW's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Here's what I did on my '78 ej25 (same as ej22) cost was $400.00 at local muffler shop. I had an ej trans also , you can see modified cross member. sorry lost the picture of the rest of the dual pipes . Mufflers were located in place of the gas tank ,tank in bed. -
Found this on the web!

1978 Brat ej25 hi/c ej 5mt rwd trans saved from junk yard!

I already run the ej 5mt awd trans. The stock rear end is not gonna hold up to drag tires and hp. I would need to tub the rear half and use a solid axle setup , like a narrowed toyota rear 8 in. I would rather run rwd but switching it to awd is easier and cheaper. I only need to change stub axle in trans and install matching rear diff along with the new front axle. I would like to think I could get into the 13's with awd ,more tuning and less weight.I still have a couple hundred pounds I could remove from brat like tailgate, bumper, dash, heater, back slider.I need just enough equipt to keep street legal .
-
FYI I'm running a ej25 w/22 heads (11:1 compression) ported heads ,Delta 230 cams , custom headers w/ dual exhaust, light balancer (1lbs) and exedy clutch. The general guess on hp is 200 chp and car weighted in at 2040 lbs. I decided to switch over to awd, It won't be as much fun but it will put the power to the ground!

Installing the engine wasn't to bad, had to widen the frame a bit. The motor mounts were slotted and the tits on motor mount removed. The rear cross member had the center between bolts removed and a dropped section welded back in. The steering works fine if you cut the corner off of the bellhousing enough to install the nut flush or slighlty countersunk.I think I used a shorter auto stud in place of the longer manual 5mt stud.ej rad fits with a little trim job and the Brat rear drive shaft was lengthened. The ej y-pipe fits if you trim the pass lower control arm.

Here's a little update on my brat project. I took it to spokane raceway park for a few time trials. It ran a best of 15.30 @ 91 mph (1/4 mile drag) with serious wheel spin thru first and second gear.I was hoping for faster times but am pleased with its performance even with traction problems.I am thinking of returning it to AWD so it will hook up of the line, as it is RWD right now.I recieved alot of attention at the races from fans of Brats.I also had bunch of people ask my what kind of a car it was as they had never seen anything like it before .Here's some pics of its new look, enjoy!

I don't know much but I do know a frankenmotor is what you want!!! ej25 with ej22 dual port heads(high compression 11:1).It's low buck and very torquey motor , add some cams, head port and header and you pushing 200 ponies! Also a lightweight flywheel and lightweight front pulley to help with revs. Good luck with whats sounds like a fun project!

I manage to get the brat together enough to drive temporarily. I won't be able to make it to wcss10 due to stupid head cold that put be behind at work. The brat also didn't get finished enough to drive it across state.I will miss seeing everyone and all the cool suby's. However I have been ripping around locally in the brat and am enjoying the power of the ej motor. Here's a pic of the dual headers I had built for it. Enjoy!!

I want to make it the show it depends on if I get the brat finished. So to aswer you, Yes and yes.

Here's a few teaser pics of whats to come ! I got the engine assembled and thought you might want a peek. Sorry for crappy pics from my Wmart $19.00 digi cam.

Finally making some progress again. I installed a used ej22 and 5mt to mock up mounts and rad.I also stripped wiring harness and made it run with key. Installed the ej rad with dual fans.Modified trans crossmember to accept ej trans.removed engine and trans to clean and paint engine bay.Installed rear lsd and rear disk brakes.changed steering rack and entire front suspension for good used stuff. Also installed vented front brakes and parking cables.changed wheels from alum to steel rallye , front ea82 spare and chevy truck 15x8 rear. put 225/50/15 cobras on rear and continental 155/60/15 on front. I also made and installed short axle on front. The driveline was sent in to driveline shop and is ready for pickup . I still need to make head gaskets for ej25/22 combo and assemble them on engine. The center diff in trans needs to be removed and welded to rwd. And take note of this : To install ej trans in ea71 , the bottom drivers bellhousing bolt must be shortened about 1".The rag joint and bolts hit the bolt and nut ,will not allow turning of steering.I tryed positioning the engine in different ways but still could not escape the problem. My solution is to remove a corner of bellhousing and using a shorter stud. You could also counter sink bolt hole in trans and use a socket head bolt. Lot's left to do !!! getting really excited to get the ej25 in and here it run. Later.......

To answer your ? is I'm not building the '85 anymore since I found the '78. I may pro-street the '78 at a later time , I want to get it together and drive it as quick as possible.Narrowing the rearend is a major job ,taking more time than I want to spend right now. Although It would look really COOL!!!! Day Three: Not much progress, I did spend time locating parts i need.I decided to put rear disk brakes and ea81 vented front brakes on.I figured a little more WHOA! to go with all the GO! was needed.
