  1. Hey everyone, I've been gone for awhile .I thought I could kick the subie addiction ..... Sold most of my rigs. As I drove the last one into the shop to sell the motor......the bug bit me agian!! I see that a lot of lifted gen 1 are in the works or completed, so let's see some pics. I'm wanting a trail rig that's capable of most terrain, not as over board as my big blue '79 brat. My next project will be ?????
  2. I live around the area and suggest you checkout the 7-mile ORV park! It's not far out of town and offers alot of different terrain.
  3. Excellent job Bushbasher! I have the skills to build anything I can imagine but I lack the ability to properly present in a form wich others can comprehend.I'm glad someone took charge of making an online description of the t-case consversion.
  4. I used the dash harness and the engine harness as a unit to match the analog dash. The only modification the the addition of the power to pwr windows.I chose the harness without a ecm so I had to change the wiring harness on engine to carb and sensors.I also changed the water temp and oil pressure sensors to match.
  5. I just spent the last 9 hrs rewiring my '84 gl10 cpe .It had the every option except 4wd and turbo. The digi dash worked everother bump, everthing else worked fine.I tried to fix digi but had no success,I looked at repinning the wires to work with analog but it looked completely different. So I removed a wiring harness from a donor car and installed it in the cpe.I did loose some of the optional epuiptment like the cruise but was able to keep power windows ,mirrors and a/c. The power window was a bit tricky but I added a power supply to two wires (big white and little blue/red stripe) on the passenger side to the widow controls.I still have to change the fuel sender tomorro and find why my heater blows cold.I suspect no thermostat because the temp reads low .I am pleased with the outcome ,now having working gauges but was alot of work to make a running car to be sold for $400.00.Oh yeah one other small problem car has auto and now it starts in all gears and has no kickdown/passing gear. That's tomorro's to do list . If you've got any question ask soon while everything is fresh in my head.
  6. Can't wait to come play in the mudd!I hope someone has a big truck to pull me out if I get stuck
  7. As the builder of UNHATCHED I have experimented with lots of idea's to use the stub axles.I did successfully install a a/c pump with electric clutch to make onboard air.I also tried to run a hydrualic power steering pump to power my snow plow. Here's the catch, when you connect to the stub axle you have to lock one side solid. You also have to remember that those axles will run in reverse when ever you back up! My powersteering pump didn't like running in reverse and detonated in a few days.So my conclusion is , only hook to the stub axles if using a clutch that can be manually released and don't run in reverse will running your attachment. Also you can't really get enough rpm to run hydrualics do to the gear reduction or the front diff.I know there's a perfect combination out there some where , just will have to try until we get it right.
  8. How much do you want to lift your gen1? and what kind of offroading are you planning on doing? Are you thinking of something like this!
  9. Ea81 radiators will fit you only have to mod top two bolt holes.Either drill holes in radiator top plate or in core support.
  10. Hi Mike,I used the v6 because I had a good runner and the adapter was already built.Plus the size of the engine fits well between frame rails.I had run unhatched with a v6 when I originally built it so I knew it had plenty of power. The chevy 60 degree v6 is buildable to 280 horse with stock parts.I had set a chevy v8 and auto in but decided the axles were to weak.Rather than change the whole setup I compromised for a smaller engine and more gears. It work out well because I can run the 4 & 6 cylinder classes and be real competative.I haven't weighed it yet I would guess around 2800 lbs ,and hp/torque are unknown.
  11. You'll have no problem with a good manual and proper tools. You need torque wrenches that measure ft. lbs and inch lbs or newtons. You will also need the large allen socket to remove the block plugs.Use a good sealant ,clean everything spotless, check all clearences, and use proper lubricants during assemble. All of this is stuff you've done on chevy or any engine rebuild.I rebuild most all engines including subarus and found them to be easy to do.I would recomend that on turbo engines of any make you use the best head gaskets available.Good luck with your rebuild!
  12. Sure for the right amount of money I would sell it.Mostly I would need compensation for my labor. There's always another project in the works, but it always requires more money!
  13. O.k. the big brat was my spring project.I wanted to lift the red one but was and am still driving it.So I traded some wheels and tires for the blue brat from the local wrecking yard.It took me a month to build it ,including stripping out four car for parts.I used only recylcled metal and used parts, except for the wheels and tsl's I have $100.00 into it.I built this mostly to be a mud racer but with alittle more work it will make a fine trail rig. The lift is custom made to fit the ea82 suspension to the gen1 body.I moved the front end forward to improve approch angle and fenderwell clearance. The rear was also moved back about 2 inches to center the tire in fender.I hade to cut the innerfenders out of the front so the strut would clear.I installed tubular bracing to stiffen the front frame.I also made a new strutbar which mount at body with a tierod end instead of rubber mnt.One reason for the ea82 suspension was powersteering along with ease of parts. The nissan t/c is mounted to agle braces welded and bolted to the body. The trans in mounted to the chevy 2.8 v6 with a adapter a had built prior.I use the 2.8 flywheel and cover with a suby disk.I also set the engine and trans back in the body to center the weight and radiator clearance. This required that I made new shifter for the trans since the rear of trans centered the original shifter hole. The rear end is locked and has 3.90 gears the front end is open.I chose that ratio to get high wheel speed in the mud pits,I will have to go to a lower ratio for offroading.I will also have to put different exuast on as I am running open headers right now.I made the headers from a old set of v8 headers and welded the many peices together.More to come....
  14. Yes your right, I put the sixlug hubs from "The Mule" on so I could run the 15x7 wheels with the 50 series tires. They fit well with no problem, and the offset is that of import trucks.
  15. I couldn't wait any longer to share these!I was gonna save the surprise for WCSS6 .The red '80 is stock other that the wheels, and the '79 is well ...... not stock! I believe this to be another first in the suby books, correct me if I'm wrong. My '79 has the most lift for any gen1 , 10 + inches. Plus it has the t/c conversion ,31X10.50 TSL's,2.8 chevy v6 ,d/r 5speed,lincoln locker rear, fuel cell, and ea82 suspension with strut bar mod's.
  16. That sound fun! Too bad it's across the state for me.With the price of gas and the fact I would have to haul my brat I think I will have to missout.Good luck to whom ever goes, show 'em suby style! later
  17. I've got two: The first is the Notorious (UNHATCHED) The original t/c conversion 6 in lift and so on. soon to be reworked. The second is ...................TOP SECRET! tease........already a trophy winner.......never before done! Hatchpatrol and Oregon offroad member
  18. Did someone say Hatch with a snowplow? presto-bango This set up uses a powersteering pump ,resovior, and valve to operate the plow lift.Angle is manual. I live in a snowbelt and plow 3 driveways with it.My drive way is a mile long with hill.I have had good luck with little breakage, so much that I didn't even use my fullsize chevy plow this year I did add a couple hundred pound of counter balance to rearend. Here's a tip: If you are looking for heavy to diff to take the punishment , a Nissan front diff bolt in a subaru using sub stub axle.I have one in the front right now after grenading mine ever have one of those days?
  19. I just used my last spfi in my girlfriend wagon. However I just learned of a yard full of subarus and will look for you when I get over there.I also have some sources in spokane and will ask if they have any good runners.
  20. I,ve been toying with the idea of two(that's two) ea81 mated together with an auto put in the back of a brat.It would only be rear wheel drive but it would be fast.Cover the bed with a tonnau cover and it would be one hell of a sleeper. The major problem is connecting the two engines together. The rear engine would need to have the crankshaft snoot custom machined with splines .Then a adapter would need to be machined to bolt the crank shaft and the rear of front engine.Make a custom intake and use one fourbarrel to feed the moster. Oh I could go on and on , but I won't because I might still build this machine.I don't want to give all the secrets away. It would be possible to make this a four wheel drive too.It would face engine backward and involve a custom t/c and a rearend in front and back(similar to unhatched but powered from the rear).
  21. Sorry Folks, Lori and I will have to cancel this trip.It seems her 85 wagon decided to take a s**t in the ran , it seems to have puked another rearmain seal out.I thought this very unlikely because I glued that little sucker in there this time.I've been told that this is cause when the thrust on the crankshaft is wore.So I decided to breakdown and put another motor in it.After all It was using oil and the lifters were getting obnoxious. I was really lookin forward to meeting everyone and conquering another trail.Hope to see you all again soon, before snow hits.
  22. check this site out ! Gator Supercharger I found it while surfing the BYB , I've read thru and found it very interesting. I've always worked with suck thru roots type blowers and prefer a blower over a turbo. I would think some of us have the ability to come up with a setup for subarus.I've always wanted to find a large deisel turbo and belt drive it for my suby, and this site proves it can be done. They even talk about the best carbs to use on there forums. IDEA! two suby turbos , one on each side, belt driven ,blowing thru carbys.muhaahaha!
  23. We are planning on coming, Time has been taken off and money alotted. The only thing left is to finish repairing Pe'Pe' my little mule.Looking forward to doin some more 4xing.
  24. How low of gear ratio are you looking for? I have 4.44:1 in my 'lil mule right now, they come in '96 and newer models with 2.5 and AWD auto.If you want ratios for the R180 they came with 4.10 and 4.37 . I've heard that there is some aftermarket gears for the R180 with around a 5.19 ratio, WOW! I run 30 X 9.50 tires with Datsun Tcase and the 4.44 gears, I figure it at a 50 to 1 crawl ratio. Seems to be low enough for this tire size.Hope this helps.
