What's the difference between the phases and why is phase II harder?

I have a 1998 wrx impreza sti 2.0L turbo and want to put a newer engine in, will the 2007 ej25 just bolt straight in and if not what is the newest ej engine that will fit without to much modification?

I have a 1998 subaru impreza wrx sti 2.0L. Ive had it for a year and its an auto. The engine is showing lost of wear and is starting to cost a lot in maintenance.I want to put a newer manual wrx engine in but I'm not sure what model engines will fit and how much it will cost all up?

Are the centre console cubbys the same in the 98 wrx and Forester? Looking at getting a gauge pod to replace the broken top but wasn't sure if it would fit because its for a forester and I have the wrx?
