Hot-Rodding a Brat in two stages - Suggestions?
Sapper 157 replied to RAD's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I have noticed a small power improvement with a K&N air filter... Weber or SPFI conversion will add more power from what I have heard. I think I remember reading somewhere that using 8mm plug wires instead of 7mm (or was it 6mm??) will also give you a boost. RAM Performance sells EA81s that push out something like 160HP (again, not sure about that number, might be 130HP) however at two grand they are not cheap. -
Thats genius... WHY didnt i think of that! Thanks!

What is the trick to getting the rear main seal into an EA81? My engine is out right now and my rear main had a slow leak so I tried replacing it with a Fel-Pro seal and ended up ruining the new seal trying to get it in. How the Sam Hill do I get it in flush with the bell housing without ruining the seal? any special tricks? I have another one on the way and this time I am not going to ruin it. I watched one youtube video where the guys put grease on the seal and then slid it in (it was on an EJ25 though...) should I do something like that? I was under the impression these seals were supposed to be installed dry. Any help is much appreciated.

I am no volkswagen expert by any means, however, the fact that a Volkwagen bettle used a front fuel tank does not excuse the fact that it is a dangerous idea. I would agree with everyone else... DO NOT, for your own safety and the safety of your passengers, mount your spare fuel tank in the engine. Like others have already said, if you get into a front-end collision.... BOOOOM. Maybe mount it in the rear?

Attack of the mice, now TWICE!#
Sapper 157 replied to MR_Loyale's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
That sucks... I was cleaning out the intake in our GMC Sierra and there was a little bit of nesting material on the air filter . I traced it back through the cold air intake and found a nest of dead baby mice in the plastic air bock that vents the air to the main air box. It was disgusting... took me 45 minutes to clean out that disgusting thing. I share in your disdain for those stupid rodents -
Engine Reseal/Clutch Job Parts List

Should I use a small drop of blue threadlocker on my oil pan bolts before installation to ensure they dont come loose? Also, how do I get the old throwout bearing off of the bearing guide? Do I just bang it off with a hammer or is here a more subtle way I am missing? -
If only I had the money... Gorgeous wagon!

This may have been covered before and I just missed it, so if I did someone please just point me in the right direction... but I have been searching the forms for the past two hours and have come up with not a lot. So anyways, I was wondering what everyones favorite gear oils/lubes are for the EA81 4 speed trannys. So far it looks like Amsoil is a good choice from what I have read. I was hoping to be able to find something a little cheaper that I can get off the shelf that would work nearly as well. I know JesZek loves Motul 80W-90, but from what I have found online that stuff is insanely expensive for my thin wallet. Although Im sure it works like wonders. Has anyone tried Royal Purpel's 75W-90 synchromax? I know its just about as spendy as Amsoil, but I am curious if anyone has any experience with it so we can compare. Right now I am running the walmart supertech 75W-90 and i want to get something a little higher quality in there so I can make this little tranny last.. and shift easier in the winter months 5-speeders are more than welcome to give their experience as well! As so far it looks like they take the same oil/lube as the 4spds...

Best Aftermarket Ignition Coil?
Sapper 157 replied to Sapper 157's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Thanks for the good explanation. I was not going to get the Accel coil just because I have heard a lot of negative stuff about em. I might just go with the hitachi coil that aba4430 posted, or just try to find an OEM one when mine finally bites the dust. -

Could you explain a little more in depth why that is? Shouldnt running a better/hotter/whatever you want to call it coil mean better overall preformance in the engine/ignition? -

1984 EA81. I was just wondering in case I might need to buy a replacement in the near future since the one I have is getting pretty old and seems to be leaking a little bit of oil -
Carb is all disassembled, just waiting on the rebuild kit now. The new oil pump came today, OEM straight from Fuji Heavy Industries!

Anybody have any opinions/experience with aftermarket coils?Which ones work best? Also, could someone give me the basics of what it means when a it says a coil can take so many ohms and volts? I'm guessing the higher the volts and ohms the higher quality the coil, but I would like to know more specifically how it effects my ignition system. Found this one on amazon: https://www.amazon.com/PerTronix-40511-Flame-Thrower-Volt-Coil/dp/B00199BO4C/ref=pd_sbs_263_2?ie=UTF8&dpID=41-dCPXkCNL&dpSrc=sims&preST=_AC_UL160_SR160%2C160_&refRID=C55NV0D2MFE0HRV4WM0T Does this look like a good one?

Thats my hope! I basically want to get this car to the point where I dont have to worry about anything on it for a long time. For a little while, it seemed like one thing after another was going wrong with it. After 32 years I guess I can expect that, but after this engine job, I hope to eliminate most potential problems

1983 gl-10 ea81 Hesitation and Idle Problems
Sapper 157 replied to tdodge41's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
If you can, find a way to strain it through a screen of some sort, then put a can of HEET or another can of Sefoam, or some MMO into it to try to rejuvenate it. After that, I would use it on any 2-stroke motors you or a friend might have. In my experience, 2-stokes are often less picky about gasoline then 4-stokes. -

drain the tank before you replace any fuel filters. -
I got the kit for rebuilding my EA81's oil pump, and found that the body gasket was a flimsy paper gasket. Is it advisable to put a light coating of ultra grey silicon on the body gasket before installation? Thanks guys!

Trick to Removing Crankshaft Pully Bolt?
Sapper 157 replied to Sapper 157's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Thanks for all the advice everyone! I should be able to get it off with all these ideas! -
On my EA81, I am trying to remove the crankshaft pulley so I can get to the front main seal, but the stupid thing wont budge. Any ideas? I assumed all that one had to do was put a 22mm socket on the bolt and turn it with a breaker bar until it let go but every time I turn it, the pulley just turns with it and I cant get enough torque to break it loose. Even in fist gear with the brake on... am I just doing something really wrong?

Aluminum Radiator for EA81? Or repair option?

Sapper 157 replied to Sapper 157's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Unless I am mistaken, I believe that aluminum is less susceptible to corrosion. I have also heard, (although cannot verify) that aluminum dissipates heat faster. -
