  1. I forgot to ask,.did you try adjusting the idle adjust screw on the front of the carburetor? If you use a flathead driver and turn it to the left then it should slow your idle down.
  2. Alright so I am actually an old gen guy but im really a fanatic of Subaru all around and am trying to keep up on my knowledge of the newer Subarus and their engines, trannys, etc. Recently I have heard some negative stuff about the newer gen soobies and I was wondering if they held any water. Possible Myth #1 The Subaru AWD system is good now, but the first ones sucked. Possible Myth #2 The new FB type engine has horrible injector problems. Could you guys clear these up for me? Do these myths hold any water?
  3. no the threads on the studs are shot. I have taken the carb off and put it back on so many times that I stripped the threads on the studs that hold the carb on
  4. 1984 wagon, EA81 The studs which hold my carburetor onto my intake manifold are stripped. Can I just screw them out and replace them with new ones? And how would I go about unscrewing them?
  5. Good gracious, that Hitachi is beautiful! Thanks man! I really appreciate the pics and the mini writeup you've done here!
  6. So I looked at my skid plate the other day and decided, why wait for it to rust? So I took it off and applied two coats of Rustolem undercoating, and then three coats of Rustolem gloss black enamel paint. im not able to post the pic for some reason. Will try again later.
  7. Hey I know this thread has been inactive for about a year but I was curious if you noticed any change of behavior when you did these deletes.
  8. Bummer. I popped pop corn and everything!! haha just pushin your buttons!
  9. Yes. http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/store/product/55-redline-weber-3236-carb-upgrade-kit-dgev-electric-choke-ea81-or-ea71-pn-k730/ If you're gonna buy new, buy it from here. As Turbo Subaru Brat stated, you can find them cheaper used. But is would seem ihscout54 would disagree about buying used. I see a potential forum war in our future...
  10. IF you have little/no experience with carbs, I would recommend that you play around with more simple carbs before attempting to rebuild the hitachi. Hitachis are devilishly complicated (they get easier the more you take them apart, but the first time you take it apart you are going to be like: what the h***??) and are very sensitive. The optimal thing to do for your engine would be a Weber 32/36 carb and adapter plate. I see them regularly for about $300. You may be able to find one at reduced price or used for cheaper, but that seems to be the average that I have seen them at.They are spendy, but from what I hear, WELL worth it. I have no experiance with them, but im sure the weber swap has been covered a bazillion times here on the forums. If you want to try to rebuild your hitachi, wait a few days. Im gonna be doing a little "documentary" and DIY video for how to rebuild hitachis as well as diagnose common Hitachi probs. I just need a few days to get it filmed & edited.
  11. There is a lot of separation on this issue. FRAM got a bad rep at some point in time and now everyone assumes they suck. In reality, their ultra filters are some of the best you can buy for the money. They have fiberglass media with a wire mesh screen for added support. They have A silicone bypass valve. And they have metal end caps. Their extra guard isn't that bad either, my family has used the extras for 20+ years on a variety of vehicles, all of which are still running perfectly. Although the construction and filtration is not as good as the on the eXtra guard than it is on the Ultra Guard.
  12. Gotta love the low center of gravity that comes with these engines, am I right? Not to mention the advantage of not having to worry about harmonic balancers. Hope im not hijacking your thread, and this may be a stupid question, but I gotta ask: is Subaru the only co. that manufactures horizontally opposed engines?

  14. Ok so I flipped the jets so they are in their proper places. Started it up and it idled great!!I just have a gasket problem because my exhaust was a bleach white (coolant no doubt) So once when I get that fixed tomorrow I should be ready to rock n' roll!
  15. Mine doesn't work either. I guess that's electronics for ya
  16. Obviously, his tire is turning into a wookie All kidding aside, im no tire shop owner but I think you just may want to get that replaced. If it was just some strange road crap that had gotten embedded in your tires, it should have come out easily. And snipping it is just asking for trouble... no problem in history ever got fixed by ignoring it. I know tires are expensive but it is going to potentially cost you more in insurance, mechanical, medical and/or funeral bills if the tire fails going 65mph. No disrespect or aggression intended, im just trying to think of your safety and the safety of others
  17. When you say "screams" is it like a grinding type of scream or a rubbing type of scream?
  18. Jesek... I dont know what I would do without you... I took the carb off today and what do I find? That the jets ARE backwards!! And what I found was this: Printed on the primary (pri) and secondary (sec) jets are numbers. I took the jets out of the other spare carbs I have so i could compare and two pairs out of the four pairs of jets that I took off have the number 111 for the pri. and 140 for the sec. I'm guessing that the number is probably hundredths of a millimeter or something like that.. but the point is that the pri. jet is the smaller number and the sec. jet is the larger number. On the bowl assembly that I am using off of a donor carb (only needed to use the bowl because my top part and base assy work fine off of my old one... so I just transplanted the bowl onto my old carb's top and bottom sections) the secondary was in the primaries place and it has the number 145. The pri had the number 114. So these jets are just a little bit bigger than my old ones.
  19. Cooling system issues are common on these cars. That is what I would look for first. If you really want a nicer 90s soobie with low(er) miles, you're typically looking at around anywhere from $1700-$3000 depending on condition and car.At least that is the common price range in the North-West
  20. Yep I replaced the gasket and swapped diaphragms. The d**** thing still won't work. My car also seems to be running really rich. The exhaust leaves a black spot on the ground. My float is adjusted on the dot.... I did do those emissions deletes. I wonder if that has anything to do with it. Here is my carb: you can see the deletes I made. does anything look wrong to anyone?
  21. Are there any negatives to doing that mod? Will my MPG drop?
  22. Oh ok. It makes sense now. Thanks guys! I'll be holding on to that canister
  23. Jeszek.... your a genius! I will make that conversion ASAP
