I know my transfer case (EA81 4spd standard...woo woo! ) always has a light coating of gear oil on it, but it is such a slow leak that its never been a problem.

The M.E.A.V. (Multi-purpose Emergency Assistance Vehicle) is outta commision right now... should get the new clutch cable tomorrow and then It'll be up and running again. Before he got laid up and while He's been laid up, ive made some minor improvements: Added Fire Extinguisher to back Slapped on some "deer/animal whistles" (the little darlings can be pretty stupid around here and I have heard these help.) Transitioned all my survival what-not from my bulky survival gear box into a convenient and tighty tool bag. shoved a LIFE READY (think thats what it was called) aluminum emergency shovel under the pass. seat. Replaced the broken piece of crap fog light switch with a new LED rocker switch. undercoated the inside of the hood (WOW! that REALLY helps with the sound!) Undercoated the metal behind the rear bumper (was getting rusty) Removed all rust and undercoated the parts of the underbody that are prone to rust New lift support for back hatch Going to be putting in new oil sending unit. repaired fuel sending unit leak put on studs (Its that time of year!) once when its running im gonna try out some Lucas 3X OCTANE BOOSTER Still on the prowl for a brush guard

Funny you should say that. Because this last cable that I had in it was an aftermarket cable by Pioneer Cables from O'reilly's. I just ordered my new one form subaru so that makes me happy. thanks all for the info. helped a lot!

Ok so my brand new clutch cable that i put in about 2,750-3,500mi ago just snapped the other day and put the Blue Bandit (1984 GL Wagon) out of commision until I can get a new one. Obviously I had that one too tight so I was wondering about how much give should the new cable have? I have heard about 1/2 an inch but wanted you alls opinion. Thanks

try a bottle of Bars Leaks Transmission STOPLEAK. If its just a seal leak that should do the trick. heres a link http://www.amazon.com/Bars-Leaks-1420-Grey-Transmission/dp/B00754YK2S/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1415641290&sr=8-2&keywords=bars+leaks+transmission

Ok so I am considering putting a five speed in my wagon but I have no knowledge whatsoever about transmissions so I have quite a few concerns. 1. Is it even possible to put a 5 speed in an EA81 with Dual Range? 2. Will I have to alter my clutch since it is a different trans? 3. THE BIG QUESTION! How much would it cost (assuming I put it in myself) If everything else pans out this could be the defining factor as i am on a strict budget. 4. Anything else that I should know assuming one can even install a 5 speed in an 84 Wagon Thanks all!

EA82 Tick of Death question
Sapper 157 replied to pparrish's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I read on another thread that using 10w-30 oil as opposed to 5w-30 will fix it sometimes. -

Anybody know where I can find a grill guard for an 84 GL Wagon? Also how much weight do they add, and most importantly, how much they cost? Thanks

"Subaru GL" Lettering removal?
Sapper 157 replied to Sapper 157's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Ok I got it off really easy with the fishing line technique. Thanks all! -
hahaha yeah nutin wrong with that!
-
oh ok my bad. good grief! 200ftlbs?! thats carzy!!
-
Yeah, that works too. I did that for my wagons check plug, but it didnt budge the drain plug so I had to use a lot of elbow grease and a steel pipe over the ratchet.
-
Well it worked for me. Im just spit balling here but im pretty sure there is a slight differance between a WRX and a Old Gen soob drain plugs. So maybe thats why yours broke and mine didnt??

"Subaru GL" Lettering removal?
Sapper 157 replied to Sapper 157's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Im reading down thru the comments and all the guys up above are giving me all these differnt techniques (helpful techniques I might add) and I come across this one... made me bust a gut!! Thanks for giving me my daily laugh dinky! -
I had that prob too. What I did what put the prking brake on, jacked up the back, and then took a long steel tube (sometimes called a cheater) put it over my rachet, applied force to the longer steel pipe and vola! you REALLY gotta put some elbow grease into it though. I wouldnt recommend an impact gun. As for the 80w, 75w difference, someone please correct me if im wrong, but the way I understand it is 75w is synthetic(longer lasting, and overall better in my opinion) and 80w is conventional. So actually, you got the better lube

Does anyone know of anyway to remove the plastic lettering from the back of a 84 GL wagon?? Im talking about the little strip that says "Subaru GL". The paint on the lettering is faded and its long overdue that I repaint it and it would make it a lot easier if I could take off the strip so I could paint it on a bench instead of on the car. Does the thing just snap on and off or is it permanently stuck in there?

had the same problem, a fellow soobie nut named MilesFox told me that 75w-90 is perfectly fine.
