  1. Ok so I was wondering if I my timing belt in my 84 GL Wagon EA81 is an actual belt or if its a chain. And if it is a chain do I need to change it?
  2. is it a true four wheel drive or is it the standard spin-whichever-wheel-is-easiest 4x4?
  3. Sorry I have already removed most of the rust and put bondo on but ill post pics of the finished product when Im done
  4. STOP PLEASE STOP. YOURE MAKING ME CRY!! In all seriousness that really does suck and im sorry that happened to you. I have an 84 GL Wagon and Im sooooo attached to the machine I just cant imagine what it would be like to lose him. At least you made it out okay though, did the big b******* cave in your top or did he catch the edge of your soob?
  5. I looked and I couldnt find 'Fuji Heavy Industries' anywhere because of surface rust. So maybe they were replaced but defiantly not recently. He rides okay for a thirty year old wagon, but honestly its hard for me to tell because I dont know how he feels without those old shocks. And for those who spoke up about the difference between the front and back you all are completely right; the shocks on the back are very different form the front ones.
  6. Ok thanks for the input. Any company you recommend or do you think the one in the link i posted is good enough?
  7. Ok so to my knowledge the shocks on my GL Wagon have never been changed. After thirty years and 163,000mi, Do you think I should get new ones? I found these on amazon and was wondering if anyone had any input. http://www.amazon.com/Monroe-5914-OESpectrum-Sensa-Trac-Passenger/dp/B000C59MIE/ref=sr_1_1?s=automotive&ie=UTF8&qid=1412130217&vehicle=1984-13-59-20--16-8-8-3182---4-430--2-0&sr=1-1&ymm=1984%3Asubaru%3Agl&keywords=shocks
  8. Ok so I would just like to know if there are any cheap or simple improvements that can be made to my car (1984 GL Wagon 1.8L) to increase the MPG. I have already discovered that keeping my tires inflated can improve my mileage by a good 1-2 MPG, but would like to know if there was anything else I can do to improve it. Along with that, are there any improvements that can be made to better the get-up-and-go power of my engine? I know these are kinda to different things but instead of creating two different topics I figured I would just kill two birds with one stone and ask in just one thread. Any suggestions?
  9. How fast were you going, and was this a single car collision or a multiple car collision?
  10. *Game show host voice* "YYYOOUUUUUUU GOT IT JOHNNY!!" thats excatly what im gonna do. Its just minor rust so it im not gonna make a big deal out of it. Im gonna try to do the best job possible but im not looking for pure perfection.
  11. Yeah no disagreement here as far as side impacts are concerned. thats a big reason why I would like to find some way to reinforce my soobs frame.
  12. My 84 GL wagon has no airbags and not even any power steering. Insurance is dirt cheap too. the nice thing about these older cars is that thirty years ago manufacturers didnt have fiberglass to work with so they had to use steel or aluminum. So while there are no ABs, these cars have several hundred pounds up metal (as apposed to fiberglass) between you and whatever your car may hit. the above pics are evidence of that. Even though it did crunch up pretty bad, it did protect the occupants. What would be really nice though is if I could reinforce my frame in case somethin like this happened. anyone have any experience with that on these older wagons?
  13. Ok thanks. I was hoping that there was a way to put a locker on it without welding but oh well I guess. Bandit (my soob) can get out of just about anything with his 4WD engaged as it is right now... Just wished I could have made it even better ya know? thanks for your insight gloyale!
  14. out of curiosity, is it possible to put a locker on a soobie??
  15. Okay so I have heard lots of different things about older subaru 4X4s. Most recently, a "friend" (I put friend in quotes because I dont actually like the guy at all, he can be a real dumb @**) of mine claimed that my particular 4x4 system on my 84 GL wagon spins the EASIEST rear WHEEL when traction is low. this goes against all that I have thought of four wheel drive because, in my mind, I your tires are spinning, the 4x4 system should either A... send as much toque to the wheel that has lost traction. or B... send equal torque to all tires to help out the one tire that is slipping. Also, then it would be considered a 3x4 not a 4x4 system. So guys, who is in the wrong here, and just how do these subaru four wheel drives work? I also ask this because I know that pretty much all companies have different types and versions of 4x4, and was wondering how subaru makes theirs. Thanks all!
  16. Yeah no worries on matching the color. I went to paint scratch and they gave me the exact touch up paint that i needed. But still keep this thread going for general body work advice and rust removal
  17. Sounds like your stater is shot. I had the same problem with mine and I replaced my thirty year old starter with a reconditioned one and it works great now
  18. Check your new spark plugs. I had a similar problem and when I checked my brand new spark plugs I found one was dysfunctional and had bad carbon build up
  19. ok so I found out that Oreillys is actually $25 per one instead of $30 per one. Also found out that, shipping included, it would cost me $26 to order from RockAuto. So it is actually a slightly better deal to get them from Oreillys. (only one dollar I know but hey, it adds up )
  20. Ok so a friend of mine is looking into getting a soob. Price is 500 bucks, 1985 GL turbo wagon, auto tranny 4x4. Description from from seller below "was fixing it up for a commuter. 108233 miles. New CV axels, K&N air filter, Plugs, Wires, Distributor cap, Rotor, Tires, cat, and exhaust. Most everything works, even the electronics (radio has some issues though). Even made a home made grill for it. Just needs some mounting brackets made. Motor runs strong. The problem is, the transfer case has a big hole in it. I bought it for 800 and put 1400 into it. Done spending money on it. Maybe you are good with cars. Maybe you need some parts for your Subaru. First $500 takes it." What's your guys take on it? I'm not an expert on transfer cases so I need a little wisdom here. Thanks all
  21. Hey guys great news... I found the right paint online at paintscratch.com. Still need some suggestions for a protective coating that I can apply to metal to prevent rust though
  22. Ok so im going to do a little rust removal and repainting on my GL wagon. The rust isnt so bad that I will need to take it to a body shop so I would like to do it myself and save a bundle. My plan so far is to remove all rust with rust removers and fine-grit sand paper, then to use Bondo to replace the lost metal, and then repaint. The last part seems to be the greatest challenge so far... I CANT FIND THE RIGHT *BLEEPING* PAINT!!! The only color info I have on my car is a tab under the hood that says "color number 243". So far, not a single online automotive paint store has what im looking for when I enter that number. Its the standard 84 wagon light blue, which i thought was pretty common on the wagons and would therefor be at least somewhat common on the paint market. Can someone please give me some wisdom on this?? Or at least the right info (like what the actual name of the paint is) so I can enter it in the websites and get the right paint.
