coronan replied to crazyhorse001's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Thanks for the link numbchux! That a great price on ebay! Can you measure your lug nuts for me? Should be 18.4mm dia of the shoulder? NO more than 13mm long on the shoulder? I looked through the doman catalog. 611-119.1 should work. -
6 lug redrill wheel/tire combos

I got aluminum montero rims. It needs a different style lug nut. The kind with a long shoulder. http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/detail/DAG0/611108/02988.oap?year=1994&make=Mitsubishi&model=Montero&vi=1207808&ck=Search_wheel+lug+nut_1207808_3466&keyword=wheel+lug+nut But the thread count is wrong. Mitsubishi uses 12 x 1.5mm thread pitch Subaru uses 12 x 1.25 I dont want to change my studs to 1.5 because i just purchased several 1.25's and tacked them in. A similar style is available for the Subaru http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/detail/DAG0/611107/02988.oap?year=1984&make=Subaru&model=Brat&vi=1267736&ck=Search_wheel+lug+nut_1267736_3466&keyword=wheel+lug+nut And is what came with my Brat. But the shoulder diameter is 17.3mm on the brat lug nut. The hole on the new Montero rim is 18.5mm I'm not sure it's a tight enough fit for the rim to mount bolt centric. Seems likely to mount up off center. The info at oriley's and napa does not tell the shoulder diameter. This is important when the center bore of the rim is larger. The hub no longer locates the rim. The bolts need to. It going to take a trip to the store or 2 to get figured out. -
EA81T high compression setups

Thanks everyone! I'll have a look at my plugs this weekend. For the distributor. If i put a vac pump on it and it holds vacuum the canister is good, right? Just want to be sure before I drop $200 in a new dizzy. Compression Ratio Math. Head volume per cylinder was machine to 40 cubic centemeters. EA81 Displacement: 1,781 cc Displacement per cylinder = 445.25 cc 40/445.25 = 11.13 But ratios need to be reduced to an equivalent fraction. 40 = 1 ------ -------- 445 = 11.1 I tried to be meticulous when I had the heads off. I let the injectors soak in injector cleaner. Checked spray pattern and flow rates with a stop watch. (crude but better than not at all.) They all flow the same. And spray the same. Although I have seen injectors spray better in the past. I know nissan injectors have higher flow rates. but not i confirm i have a lean condition with wide band O2. -
EA81T high compression setups

I had the top end rebuilt only. Stock pistons. The head was shaved to bring it up to 10:1. Only 100,000 mi. on the motor. Oil pressure is good. A rod knock should be constant. No? I think its detonation because i only hear it after long on ramps or continuous driving at high speeds. When i roll off the throttle and boost drops bellow 5psi the noise goes away. I'd really like to hear from folks who are successfully running similar setups. How much timing? What plugs? Less than stock boost? Thanks! -
Compression an Turbo motors have been discussed but i'm inquiring about the other details other folks have found to work. I have a EA81 Turbo. Heads from Ram Performance with larger valves. Polished heads, but not ported. 10:1 compression Stock Turbo Cam NGK BPR6EIX-11 Spark plugs. Stock turbo 16lb radiator cap New water pump Stock boost (7psi) I think that's it. Hear knock at sustained full throttle. I backed my timing down to 11*. It's reduced but I can still hear it. Sorry, no wide band O2.(yet) Should I move to a cooler plug? That are other folks using? Thanks!

6 lug redrill wheel/tire combos

A MACHINIST could do it, easily. Most of us shade tree guys don't have the equipment to do it accurately. Did you ask him how much it would cost? -
Gauging Interest: Open-Source/-Hardware Engine Management.

Great ideas in here. I didn't have time to read all 4 pages line for line, but food for thought.... A Harley guy told me that they are using Tablets for everything on there bikes from Ignition to fuel injection to Audio ect. They can even start the bike with the tablet. Locked with the pin or finger print, or Take the tablet inside and the bike is disabled. The hardware already exists. And in an interface we are all familiar with. Now you just have to write the software and fabricate a wire harness. Hope this has not already been covered. -

Answering my own question. Looks like I do not have a toyota rim. Looks to be more like a Blazer rim. Converting to inches the stock rim has a 4.92" back space. Credit to where i found the chart. http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/topic/157063-max-tire-size/?hl=wheel Using a couple of resources a Mitsubishi Pajero First Gen (1982 - 1991) uses a wheel 15 x 7 back space of 4.8 Offset +20mm Sources: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mitsubishi_Pajero http://www.wheel-size.com/ https://www.rimsntires.com/specspro.jsp -

I did a lot of reading on this a while back. My notes say toyota pickup / 4 runner rims should work. And 205-70-15 is the largest tire that will fit with out a lift. Here is what it looks like. Hits the front fender. And there is no room for wheel travel, because the tire sits out too far. This toyota rim has 85mm back space. Stock is 125 mm back space. So some where I assumed something out got mixed up. Anyone have measurements on other 6 bolt rims they used? -

I'll take 2 intake hoses. -
I'm looking at Master Cylinders at Napa for a 99 outback to put in my EA81 brat. Does the EA81 resivoir fit the outback MC? Does with or without ABS matter? Thanks!

Heater control valve, making my own.
coronan replied to mikaleda's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
My heater control valve is leaking from the piston / lever. I'm curious how everyone elses DIY turned out. If i put in a custom 3 way valve i still need to control the damper. How did others get around this? thanks!- 13 replies

EA81 is giving me the blues!

Get a new radiator cap. The cooling system must pressurize to keep it from boiling. -
That looks like the same topper as mine. I wonder how the rain gutters attach?
-
Hello, I'd like to add cross bars to my brat topper. I'm looking for ideas before I fab. Anyone else done it? Seen it done? Bolt plates to the side? Thanks!
-
GD: Got a part number / link for that all metal radiator? All my searches come up with plastic tanks. Thanks!
-
So an EA82 radiator will fit a EA81T with AC? It looks so tight between Fan and water pump pulley.

Aftermarket Water Pump for EA81
coronan replied to Sapper 157's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I notice the EA81 lists a different water pump than the EA81T. Anyone know what the physical differences are??? Please only respond if you have held both in your hands. Speculation does not gather knowledge. -
Burbing the cooling system
coronan replied to Sapper 157's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Good thermostats have a jiggler valve in them and burp themselves. If not drill a 1/16 hole in the flat area of the thermostat. -
According to the wire colors.... All wires match the wire diagram in post #4. "NCA" wires are the same color as the just upstream. Output to the Compressor clutch is Green wire. Not sure What an FCID air valve is. Bueler? Per the Illustration in post #8: 11 = AC Relay [ on strut tower] Switches Sub fan control AND compressor clutch 25 = Condenser Fan Fuse, 20a [ behind air filter] 22 = Micro switch [on upper damper control for vent selection] [wire colors are Blue , Black ] 23 = ? 26 = ?

I understand that most harness have some unused plugs for various options. I suspect some funny business in my wiring until proven other wise. What relays am I missing in the strut tower? First Pic: 1 of 3 relays is present. 1 has been bypassed. 5 pin connector has nothing near it to plug to. Sorry its out of focus, 2 pin connector with black and white wires. Nothing to plug to. 4 pin connector, Shaped like a relay connector but back by the firewall and pressure boost sensor
