Starter issues, Looking for some help
samisunjp replied to samisunjp's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
The old one has only acted up the one time when I had to tap on it, otherwise no issues with it for over a week after that one time. I could put the old one on right now and have it start fine. And with the new one sometimes it will not ever start. sometime it will and sometimes it will take a few tries. -

yes the car seems to start after a few tries, however if it were the ignition than why do I get a good start on the first try on the old starter? -
Starter issues, Looking for some help

So I had a small problem with my starter the other week were it was not .. well .. starting! There was no click or anything but the battery was good. So I took out a wrench and tapped on the starter and tada ... it worked. Got back home and have not had any issues aince. I picked up a secondhand starter to switch with the one I have to solve this problem. I took off the old starter and put on the new one, car started up great a little faster than with the other starter. The next day I come out to my car try to start it and .... nothing. It just ticks. So I figure I,ll put the old starter back on to make sure it is that starter that is causing the problem. Car fired up like a champ. I clean all of the connection on the new starter put it on the car and it starts up no problem. Today I come out to my car to start it after letting it sit for 3 days after putting back on the new starter, it starts up kinda of funny like the starter was hesitating but it started. Turn the car off and it doesn't start, just clicks. But if I try starting it a few times eventually it will start and not just click. So I am wondering if you guys have any ideas as to why this is happening with this other starter. It didn't cost me much so it is not worth sending back, and I still have the old starter in the mean time to get me to where I need to go. Any input would be well appreciated! -
So I was going down a back road today at about 35 mph and hit a pothole or rock not really sure which, and about an hour later when getting out of my car I noticed that my front left rim was bent ( see pictures). The tire seems to be holding air fine and I got up to 60 mph without feeling anything weird in the car. So is the damage bad enough that I need to get them fixed? If so does les schwab fix bent rims, and if so how much is it going to set me back as I am really strapped for cash right now?

Well in regards to Subasaurus, I ran the car tonight for about 20 minutes pushing it really pretty hard, and it got warmed up fast. In fact I think I have rarely pushed it that hard before and it did not die on me, but I will look into the the distributor. I have had it last around a hour with no problems thus far but hey I'll try anything at this point I just can't have it die on me when I really need it.

I have not posted anything on here in a while ( mostly because my car has been running great) but I have run into quite the problem. So .... about two days ago I was driving through town at about 20 miles an hour and poof the engine completely died. No puttering or sputtering just dies. However it was just the engine the electrical was working fine.So I pulled of the side of the road and immediately tried to restart it to no avail. Then about 10 minutes later I tried starting it and it started right up. I thought maybe before I take it on the highway at 55 mph I should putter around town to make sure it isn't going to die again, but once again the engine died but for some reason it started right back up while I was moving without me trying to start it. So I thought weird but I need to get to my house. So I got up to speed and drove the 10 miles to my house at 55 mph and had no issues on the way home. The next morning I replace the fuel filter and that whole day I drove it all over the place and had zero problems. I was thinking great just a dirty fuel filter. But then .... Today on my way into town it died again while I was going 55 mph. SO I pulled off to the side of the road and waited about 10 minutes and it started right back up. Drove it back home with no problems. When I got home I checked to make sure the fuel pump was pumping gas and it seemed like it was (I'm not really sure of the best way to check this) and nothing seemed really wrong with it. The engine idles at about 700 rpm once it is warmed up and I find it impossible to replicate it dying on me. It seems to be just random. So now I turn to you guru's to try to help me get my car running back to its normal state so I don't have to worry about it dying on me during an inconvenient time. I appreciate all of your responses in advance.

So I am going to be attempting to change the timing belt on my '88 gl wagon soon. I will also replace the water pump at the same time. Really I have two major concerns. First of all my ea82 engine is equipped with air conditioning and was wondering if you guys had any tips on working around that component while changing the timing belt/ water pump. Another thing I was wondering about was whether or not I need to remove the radiator to do this change and have enough room to work. I am also looking for some general tips on changing the timing belt outside of the obvious complete tutorial. Thanks Kyle.

1988 Subaru GL wagon single point fuel injection: So I have been losing coolant recently from my car. This only seems to happen on longer trips and not like 20-30 min drives. The entire reserve bottle will be gone by the time I turn off my car. There is coolant on the skid plate and back by the passenger axle. These are coolant drips and not large amounts of coolant in those areas. There is some coolant around the timing belt cover area. There was also some steam coming off of the engine at one point that I assumed was burning coolant and that was around the intake maniflold and throttle body. There was no leakage on the water pump weep hole that I could see. There are no visible leaks on any of the hoses. Temperature gauge stays about a little under half and it has never overheated. Heater also does not blow really hot. Any ideas on what this could be? Thanks for any suggestions, Kyle.

I kind of noticed a gas smell yesterday just after starting it up then shutting it off after 30 seconds near the muffler. I would describe the smell as either really rich exhaust or maybe mixed with a little gas. The car had exhaust work done in 2000 and a new muffler put in in 2008. Is there anything to worry about? -

I forgot to mention this but the car has 190,000 miles on it. I was hoping that if I take good care of it and keep up on maitnence that the car would still run on a lot longer.Any thoughts on the mileage of this car and how much I could still get out of it? Thank you so much for your responses -Kyle -

Wow that was really quick, thanks for all of the suggestions so far and I will be sure to get some pics up later today. -
Hi I am new to this forum as well as the subaru I just bought and was looking for some suggestions. The Subaru I bought is a 1988 GL Wagon with a fuel injected engine (not sure if that maters). It is in really nice shape. Runs good and drives good. However this is my first car and was just wondering if there is some stuff that should be done to it right out of the gate. I already have plans to change all of the fluids and replace the timing belts and water pump. The car was owned by an older gentleman since the day it was new and only until the last few weeks has it not been. There are some receipts for oil changes, all the break pads, something about an axle(again I don't know much about cars), and various other little things. So now that I have put all of that out there I was wondering if there is anything else I should do to it to make it a good daily driver, with the exceptions of cosmetics and something that is crazy expensive. Thanks, Kyle.
