  3. Yes the top one looks similar to what I put in there. The second one is what I imagined should be the one used. It makes sense to me now because I did not specify ea82 I just said 1.8l
  4. That's what I thought too. The thermostat fits inside a groove in the O ring and then is sandwiched between the block and the housing. So far it seems to be working fine. When I look it up on partsgeek.com it shows a gasket. I wonder why the parts store shows an O ring? It is a Fel-pro brand and said 1.8l subaru right on the packaging.
  5. I had a coolant leak at my thermostat housing. I went to the parts store to get a new gasket. (thermostat is fairly new) The parts guy gave me an O ring. I questioned him on it because I knew there was a cork gasket on there already. He pointed to his book and told me that is what it calls for and to put the O ring around the thermostat. I came home and referred to my Haynes manual and it describes a gasket as well. I went ahead and used the O ring with no gasket of any kind anyway and so far it seems to be working just fine. I am just looking to hear peoples opinions and experience with this repair. Thanks!!!
  6. And honestly I am just speculating on the threads being stripped. I don't know for sure because I put the timing covers back on.... Really wished I didn't do that now. So in a couple weeks I will tear into it and see what I can find.
  7. I remember I messed up the threads on the bolts when I over torqued them and I had to replace a couple of them. I don't know if the bolts are steel or not but the threads were definitely jacked up
  8. Thanks for this info! I will see if I have the M-6 tap in my collection tonight. I would like to not use helicoils if I can get away with it.
  9. Has anyone done this? What size helicoil do I use? Are there any alternatives like tapping the existing holes and using larger bolts? I replaced the mickey mouse seal almost 2 years ago and now the other day I discovered a leak at the oil pump. When I did the re-seal I may have stripped the bolt holes because I over torqued them. I did have to replace a couple bolts because they were stripped. I'm hoping that the seal has gone bad and the bolt holes are fine. I just want to get some information incase of the worst. Thank you

You'll have to read through the thread and there is a link to a photo of what they are talking about. I've been having similar issues but not lately so I haven't done this fix yet myself.   12. I've been told on this forum that Fram is the OEM oil filter..... I guess that is bad?
  13. If you strip one you can also tap the block with a 7/16th's and use a 7/16ths stud for a replacement. I just did it to my EA82 a couple weeks ago and worked like a charm and simple. Saved me the $ on helicoil set and I already had the tap. Just my 2 cents
  14. Those calipers are a pain! When I did mine I attempted with needle nose pliers and it took forever! I went and bought a universal brake caliper tool that goes on a socket wrench for around $7. Even with that it was a pain and I had to apply a lot of pressure as I was turning them to get the cylinder to retract.
  15. The oil light could have came on with a broken driver side timing belt because it runs the oil pump. To see if the driver side belt is broke take off the distributor cap and have a friend crank the engine over while you watch the distributor. If the rotor of the distributor doesn't turn then you know it is a timing belt issue.
  16. Thank you but I found the correct filter using the Fram website. I was not aware that Fram is the OE for Subaru. I have used fram filters everytime I do my own oil change. My thoughts are that it is a disposable part so why spend the extra money. Hey Sapper you make a valid argument with the evidence you have provided EDIT: Annnnnndddd there is a second page of comments that I just saw lol. MR_Loyale very excellent rebuttal. You and Sapper are too funny I am enjoying the banter.
  17. My car has the idiot light. I was running 5-30 and would get TOD after running at highway speeds for 20-30 minutes. I switched to a 10-40 oil and that solved it until the other day. I drove almost 3,000 miles before it started again.
  18. Yeah I wouldn't know a justy if it ran over my foot haha. I just saw it was same year and engine. I've been watching a couple vs vids on youtube on fram filters. Maybe I will try a better quality filter on my next change ONLY because TOD about 200 miles before I'm due for an oil change and I suspect flow restriction is the culprit. Long story but I was plagued with intermittent TOD for about a year and have recently solved it by switching oil weight and re sealing the oil pump. I hate paying more $ on a disposable part but I hate TOD even more
  19. I have read forums of people who absolutely hate Fram and I've been using them for years on all of my vehicles with no problems (knock on wood) I'm too cheap to buy the more expensive filters. I believe I substituted a 93 loyale 1.8l for a 93 justy 1.8l in the Fram filter book. I figured it would be the same guess I was wrong.
  20. Does anybody use Fram HM oil filters? I went to buy one and the book didn't list a "Loyale" but it listed another model Subaru and said 1.8L so I purchased that filter thinking it is the same thing. I don't recall the # on it but it ended with an "A". I got it home and noticed it was much smaller than the filter I had purchased my last 2 oil changes (Fram HM3682) I have no idea why I originally bought the HM3682 if the book listed this other filter to use. Anyway I took the small filter back and purchased the same filter that I had on my sube for the last 2 oil changes. As I was putting the filter on I thought that maybe the smaller filter would be a better match to the mating surface of the oil pump. It seems to run fine with the filter I have chosen and doesn't leak I'm just looking for opinions.

  22. A few days ago I posted seeking advice for stripped threads in the head of my ea82 for the header studs. I was coming to terms with the fact that I was going to have to buy a helicoil set, do some drilling, and tapping then install the helicoil etc. etc. Honestly, I was intimidated by this repair because I have no experience with this type of work and I could just picture myself screwing up with catastrophic results. Gloyale chimed in with a suggestion on tapping the existing hole with a 7/16-14 tap and install a 7/16 stud in the newly tapped hole. Not only did it worked like a charm but it saved me some coin and no drilling! So, if this ever happens to you and you have a 7/16-14 tap on hand save your money on helicoils they are not needed. This job took me a little more than hour to tap both of the holes, install the studs, and reattach the exhaust (Including 2 trips to the parts store because I forgot to buy new gaskets.) Thanks again Gloyale for that tip!
  23. Well epic fail with the jb weld lol. As soon as the manifold got warmed up the jb weld turned to putty and I'm sure you can figure out the rest. I guess I'll get around to fixing it the right way in the near future.
  24. Update: I opted to go with re tapping the stripped hole to 7/16". I attempted to go through the flange like suggested but I had 0 clearance for my tap handle to turn. So I tried to remove the exhaust pipe to gain access. Well, turns out the other stud was going to come out with the nut. I was afraid of stripping that one too and so I snugged it up and went with jb weld in the stripped out hole. I'm not real proud of doing that but I really didn't want to open a huge can of worms right now. (maybe I did anyway with using jb weld) I guess it will be interesting to see if it works or not. Thanks for everybody's suggestions.
