That's what I was afraid of. He said weeks ago everything was working. Now when you push the button it doesn't go into 4x4. He mentioned a week defroster vent too. Which might be related to the leak you mentioned. I'm 5.5 hours from the car so I can't diagnose easily. This was my first car at 16 and really was interested in getting her. It's in pretty decent condition for a 1991. Good frame and body.

The owner said he was able to get the car into 4x4 by going under the car and actuating it on the transmission. He assumes it's the solenoid. He said vacuum lines looked good. Not sure what else it could be. Can the car stay in 4x4 permanently?
-
Thanks ! I'm looking to purchase the car and the current owner says he thinks it's the solenoids. I'm leery to get and not be able to get them.

My car has the push button, so I'd be looking for the solenoids for the part time setup. Tried eBay but can't seem to find the part. Not sure what to call it.
-
These are the solenoids that sit I'm the engine bay up by the driver side firewall and strut.

Does anyone know if the two solenoids are available that are related to the 4x4 actuation on this car? Vacuum lines and fuses all check out ok.

In your opinion, would you say that the upgraded rear bearing shown in the link above make for an easier install? Also, I am still a tad bit confused. So this bearing in the link below: http://www.napaonline.com/Catalog/CatalogItemDetail.aspx/Wheel-Bearing-Rear-Wheel/_/R-ATM2123001_0418666376 This bearing is the inner? I will still need to purchase the outer? I am on Rockauto.com and only see the new style inner bearings. The outer rear bearings for sale are all for front wheel drive Subi's....
-
That I will do. The I just moved so I am HOPING this Napa has a little bit more enthusiasm than the last. The last Napa I dealt with would look in there crappy computers and say, "nah, we don't got it". In most cases I would have to search for part #'s. Thanks legacy specialist for the info. I'll be huffing and puffing to do the rear bearings this weekend. Wish us luck!

Hi everyone, My '85 DL is in need of some fresh rear wheel bearings. I am a little bit confused on what I see on Napa/RockAuto as to what part(s) I need. I see there is an inner and outer bearing. Napa shows the inner and the outer which are below: Inner: http://www.napaonline.com/Catalog/CatalogItemDetail.aspx/Wheel-Bearing-Inner-Rear-Wheel/_/R-BRGBR30206_0141319794 Outer: http://www.napaonline.com/Catalog/CatalogItemDetail.aspx/Wheel-Bearing-Outer-Rear-Wheel/_/R-BRGBR30204_0141319795 Then Napa also lists this bearing... Is this both inner and outer combined?? http://www.napaonline.com/Catalog/CatalogItemDetail.aspx/Wheel-Bearing-Rear-Wheel/_/R-ATM2123001_0418666376 I also read that I should buy both inner and outer replacement seals. From what I see, they don't come with the Napa bearings. Any idea where I can get those and what the part # would be? Thanks! Craig

Well I went out this afternoon and jacked the front up nice and high. Low and behold lots of air bubbles came out! THe heater is making a lot less gurgling noises and blowing nice toasty air! Watch the bubbles: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4TJXVdzvniw -

Replacing the heater core sounds very unattractive. Does the entire dash have to be removed or is there a trick to get her out without doing all that? -
Subaru DL Heater Core Questions

What is the reason these cars are notorious for holding on to trapped air? I thought my '98 GTI VR6 was finicky with coolant and air bubbles, but this car takes the cake. I've never heard a heater core make the noises that this DL does. My girlfriend swears water is going to come out on her feet. -

i will try that! However I am about to do timing belt water pump and oil pump seals in a few weeks. I may just wait to do a total flush since I have to drain the fluid anyways. Any other reason for so much air in the system? Radiator cap is now sealed. -
Hi everyone. Two weeks ago I purchased a rust free 1985 Subaru DL. When I picked up the car, the heat worked great but after driving it home (200 miles) I began to hear really odd noises coming from the heater core and my heat when the car was warmed up was dismal. It sounds like water is going to explode out of the heater core onto the floor boards, however there is no leaks. Coolant level remains steady. This week I found that the radiator cap was old and quite loose so of course I put a new one on. I burped the system and a bunch of air came out. The heat is now working much better than it did BUT I still hear crazy water rushing and air noises from the heater core area. It is almost as if there is air in the heater core. When I go around a turn and/or rev up the motor and the water pump gets thing flowing the rushing water noise in the heater core sounds incredibly bad. Sometimes I have to look down at my feet to make sure nothing is exploding on to my feet. My question is even though I bled/burped the system, could a lot of air still be trapped in the heater core? If so, why in the heater core? Is my heater core on its way out or is there a way to get all of the air out?? I do know the car sat in a barn for over 2 years without ever being started. Would a complete flush of the system and refill help things? I'm really weirded out about this. Please help!!!

Simple EA82 water pump questions

I just ran into this problem today and my solution to remove the ball joint from the knuckle was to of course remove the pinch bolt then take a smaller size pick and hammer it slowly into the pinch opening, thus spreading her wide open Worked like a charm for me. The ball joint actually fell out of the knuckle like butter. Was very happy this happened! Worst part is I wasn't even trying to touch he ball joints today but in doing my axle I hit the ball joint threads with a hammer by accident, thus damaging the threads Now tomorrow after I pick up the new ball joint I have to re-do all my work. Ugh.
