What to do with a tourning wagon?
tailgatewagon replied to WoodsWagon's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
kinda along the same thing,,, there is a gen1 legacy with a turing roof. its an 92-94 style. but its a turing wagon... also almost all new subarus are turing wagons.... -
blizzys are fine for ice driving but they suffer in deep snow they also ware fast.... i would go with the Nokian RSi, i ran nokian's on my cars. ive gotten 35,000 miles out of a set with alot of 80+ driving on pavment. ive also never found a better tire in deep snow (under 12in) i pulled off the highway in my wifes nissan sentra with 3in of old snow and 8in of new stuff the car came right out... they were also stable at 85+ on snowpack,,,,,,, blizzacks do hold a little better on pure ice but they arnt as good at mix siutations and slush driving pulse they will never hold up to fast pavment driving or agressive driving on mixed snow and gravil... i know i rally with my buddy that will only run bizzys and he tears them up every season. while mine last and i drive just as hard as him,,,, anyway at least check out the Nokian RSi

if you junk it save the rear glass as they are worth a mint to the right people since you cant find them anywhere there are probably 5 or 6 touring wagons here in bozeman mt. and at least 1 has had plastic on the rear glass for a year or better........ -
My EJ22 Chronicle Update(10/2) PIX(10/2)
tailgatewagon replied to tailgatewagon's topic in Subaru Retrofitting
size wise it should fit fairly well. as for axels i will just run the normal gen 1 axels with ea82t inner cups. that will allow me to mate them to the legacy trany(25 spline just like ea82t tranys) the stock non turbo pre legacy tranys were 23 spline.... i will have to mod the trany crossmemeber a bit as the leg trany is longer then the sr ea71 trany. ill see what kind of mods need to be done when i get there. as i have a lift to use. i will install the motor first then the trany as to get the fitment right. then ill make my pitching stopper and what not -
ive got pix of my test fitment of an ej22, in the other post here in the retrofit fourm. you can get an idea of what you will half to do to fit the 2.5 probably going to have to noch the fram a bit more then i will as the single cam 2.2 wont take up as much room as the 2cam ej2.5, you will have to widen your motor mount holes, i did it with a drill and a file. had to widen mine 1/2 in on each side. i test fit with ej motor mounts they worked grate.. will probably get some sti mounts to keep motor movement down... also the rad will fit but you will have to get pusher fans. as there will only be about 1in between the crank pully and the rad,,,, later

tailgatewagon replied to tailgatewagon's topic in Subaru Retrofitting
UPDATE, ea71 is out along with trany!!!!!!!!!! test Fit EJ22....... had to widen motor mount holes 1/2 in each side. fits like a glove.... kinda cool the distance between the motormount bolts and the center of the front axle is within 1/8 in between 1979 1600 sr, and 1994 ej22 5speed..... http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/photos/showgallery.php?cat=500&ppuser=679 pix here... also working on wiriering harness looks to be about 15% done on that:rolleyes: -

tailgatewagon replied to waimaks's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
i have a 79 wagon with that same setup. 1800 dualrange it came from a 81 gl brat. anyway the only mod it has is a 2.25in exhaust.... i have no problems running faster then the car feals safe at.... i ususaly run it around 75-80 (kinda schetch if not on the freeway.) but ive had it to 95 several times on flat ground,,,.... anyway congrats on your find with that kind of milage it should be mint if it was kept indoors. -

inho early 2.5 suck when it come to subaru's but is ususaly at par or above when compaired to usa auto's ,,,, i think as a car 2.5 subarus are a decent buy,,,,, as a subaru buy there are better choices,,, as in how about a 97 legacy ls or lsi, it will ride much nicer (outbacks are like lumber wagons in comparison) and the body clading is looking dated on 2000 and older outbacks,,,,, the non outback will cost you less. you get a built proof motor, welll as bulit proff as anything man made can be... better gas milage(but is usualy up to the driver not the car) not saying the outback is a bad buy but i think if you look over subarus line of cars at that time 96-99, you may find a car you like better that will cost less and bring a few less headakes

ok i thought it would be cool for us to list what manuals we all have, that are for gen 1 and pre stuff. since some of these manulas are hard to find it would be helpfull for those that dont have them to know who dos, that way they might ask questions... anyway ill start feel free to ask me for info, i may not be able to take to find the time to get everyones requests but am will to look into it.. anyway here is what i have.... 360's parts book for 360 young 360 sedan 360 truck 360 van, 360 auto(auto trans in sedan thingy) ff-1 engine manual 1100+ body manual, parts books, gen 1 72 engine manual 72 body manual 73 supplement 74 supplement 75 supplement 76 supplemnt 72-79(wagon)81(brat) parts books 74 imisions stuff FYI(72 was the base books for service manuals, 73-76 were all addon supplements that you need the privious books to use so if you have a 76 it helps to have 75, 74 72 exctra) other odd stuff 1000 subaru engine manual(dos not refer to ff1 anywhere that i can fined) gen 1 accsessory guide,,,,(relly cool)

Reciver car 1979 GL wagon 4x4 ea71. doner car 1994 LEG LS 4dr sedan. awd 5speed. progress made. 1994 legacy wiring harness pulled from Legacy. took 4.5 hours but i have headlights to taillights....and everything in bettween. im going to take pix of everything hopefully it will help others. anyway pix to follow tomorrow..... motor ready to pull (2 bolts holding it in.) 1979GL. engine compartment paint came today.... lost of NOS parts ready to go on. i figured i would start a tread about it instead of posting a new thread every other day with progress..

there is a brat in AU running a ej20 sti motor. its had alot of fabing done on it and what not..... as for the motor fitting without any mods.well if the quad cam ej25 is the same as the single cam 2.2 size wise then i can tell you on sundaynight:grin: but looking at it you will probaly have to. some frame mods..... if i were you i would sell that crapy 2.5 (all 2.5's are in my opion since they blow headgaskets as much as ea82ts, and have piston slap probables clutch shuder problems. ect...) anyway then you could get a front clip from a jap wrx front clip and do a turbo swap. .........
