  1. Yes , it sounds familiar , but to reproduce it is another story. But is it more of theoretical value , the internals off the technique and how it works , is very interesting.
  2. Ok , I have seen and read the 1001 times story before , and I agree. I only was misunderstanding the following txt : "In 1st range manual the transmission stays in 1st gear and also will upshift to second at 6500 RPM to prevent damage to the engine. Additionally, on AWD vehicles, the TCU applies a more aggressive AWD map when the selector is in the 1st position, manual switch “ON” or “OFF.” These changes result in improved driveability on low friction road surfaces" (from Endwrench) My real question is : What means "more agressive AWD map" ? An extra reduction compared to "1" selected in D ? There are more issues not known (to me...) with 4EAT : There is at about 90Km/h an upshift (In case of no or low acceleration) to what ? Overdrive ? I first thougt that it does this only in the "economy" position , but that is not true , happens always...
  3. Impreza , 1993 , 1.8L , awd . My house on the beach is only acessible via at least the last 2000 m sand. Sand as you only can imagine on dunes in a tropical ambient. So far I tried the manual button and 2 gear , does not work.... Just first gear and lower tire pression , brings me everywhere. An even more important : brings me back ! Now the "manual" button seems to bring a more agressive way for the first gear , that what I read somewhere. Who knows more about it , if it is critical , ativating the switch to manual in 1 gear brings what ? Lower gear ratio ?
  4. 10 days ago I still had 2 or 3 contacts in a timeframe of 2 days. All by mail , nothing was blocked (from/to Brazil) Promised was the info for monday , this week.
  5. The products can be fantastic , the customer relations is not. One week ago I was promised to send me all details for shipping . final price etc. 3 repeat messages and two phonecalls later , stil nothing.... So I do not know how to order yet , most cumbersome is the total silence , only an semi-automatic receipt of one of my mails was received. Is MWE stil in bussiness ?
  6. I received a quote from Marhall Wolf , guess it will be my favourite. thanks for all your input
  7. Impreza , 1993 , 1.8L , auto , awd . Found two suppliers willing to send two front axles to Brazil. One is MWE , RECONDITIONED ones , price $95/p The other is brand "ARC" , NEW , price $60/p The price difference is not important , I have to pay anyway the freight and customs charges , wich together will amount to about $250...... What is your experience with those two brands ? Thanks for any input
  8. Ok , that is something to hang on ! As the mecanic (which I trust) told me that the all parts of the front axle at both ends are fine , I guess that the "wobbling" as you call it , might really be the reason of the sound. Of course it is a car with quite some heavy live behind it. And at some time I have to give it up , but I like it very much.... I could do a test with some soft material in between the two , (tissiu , teflon ? ) just to find out if the rattling dissapears. If so , later loctite or some other material to keep it in position ? Thanks for your input !
  9. I have the correct FSM , but did no find tolerances spec. between the output shaft and axle. I guess that the play must be in the 0,1 mm range and not mm itself , as it is now. Can somebody just look at your own car and tell me ? Seems to me that it must more or less the same for different engines or year .
  10. Impreza 1,8 L , 1993 , awd , automatic , 150.000 miles , most in stop and go , big city trafic (SP) Problem : A rattling sound , like you tick with a small hammer on a bigger piece of iron. At every turn of the wheel twice , only under load , independent of turning. Passenger front side. Forward or reverse ; same thing. Loudest at low speed. Local mecanics did everything to detect the source ,after quite some tests with different mecanics they found the main suspected item was the front axle DOJ part (transmission side) The right front axle was taken out and carefully dismantled and every internal part inspected. Everything was ok , new grease was inserted ,the old spring pin had quite some slack.... A new pin was not available , after widening the pin somewhat it was inserted again. Problem solved , no sound anymore..... Two days later and after 50 miles , the same sound is back! I now suspect the outer race of the DOJ having to much play on the axle shaft of the differential. I can feel a play of about 1 to 2 mm (0,1 inch) or even more, between them , moving transversal. First question : what is the normal play between them ? Second question : Who had this before and solved it ? Solving can be as easy as buying new parts , the only withdraw is that these parts are simply not available in the place where I live....... Ordering them in for instance the USA will take at least 2 months to get it. If the (exessive?)play is the culprit , how to solve it (by inserting material ,or reducing in an other way the play ?) I came to this conclusion as it was silent after the spring pin was still holding the parts closer together. And I guess that there should be no demonstrable play between outer race and transmission shaft. Any help or advice is more then welcome !
  11. Don't use them , most problems I had with my 1993 Impreza was with them. Very Bad ! Filter particles just solved , don't know the "Very Good" USA made chemicals , but I would refrain from all of them !
  12. I have seen doing it by a lock smith , but I do not remember exactly. (more then one year ago) , but it is definively a release pin to push , and everything pops out. No splitting , nor drills or so
  13. This is my story http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=88646 One faulty injector.........
  14. I just ask myself about the brake tubings , no need for longer ones ?
  15. Not your engine type (mine= EJ18), but similar "uncertain" behaveour , changed the plug wires (a bit outside spec) , new plugs , O2 sensor , no change. Now I know it was an injector , seems to happen seldom , so I also was replacing anything else.
  16. I thought about it , but it is just needed for every day's roads...
  17. Yes , it is very good , all the FSM are there.. I did take a minimal description (I think it was 3 days) , you need a high speed connection and then download all there is. But you should reserve these 3 days for doing nothing else as selecting and downloading. I did this after I bought the same rubbish CD's as you did.......No one of the 4 I bought was worth a penny...
  18. Looks impressive , where to order and for what price ?
  19. Subaru is like a white elefant at "Place de la Concorde" where I live. No way to get something other than local solutions.
  20. What are the dangers of lifting 2 inch at every strut upper spring seat ? There is now a standard thin rubber seat. People suggested me to change these for thicker (2 inch more) hardrubber rings. Can I expect more problems than a higher point of gravity and more wear at the axles ? Anything more ? If it was that easy , why I never read about it ? Please a reply by an "lift" expert. Thanks !
  21. Try and error. The faulty one had a resistance of less then 7 ohms , normal is 12-15 ohms. Just read the earlier treads.
  22. I already talked about this case in an earlier thread , http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=87795 , but since it became clear now , after some tanks of gasoline , that the failure was present much more time in the past. Even if it might be seldom with failing injectors , over the time I ownded the car , I spoiled quite an amount of mony in using too much gas , as well as for other parts. Hope that this info might help others.............. The impreza 1993 , awd, auto , 1,8 L , never was economically. But the last months where very bad , may be 10 miles per gallon. 10 thousend miles ago , I always had problems with long downhill trajects , one plug stopped working for cilinder1 . Renewed all electical ignition parts , filters etc. Became better , but not solved completely. Always at certain rpm's the engine seemed to run on 3 cilinders...especially without a certain load. Now everything is different , the engine runs smooth , no more black exhaust , the tank gauge does not seem to move anymore.. One injector never closed completely , and so it used exessive amounts of gas. The faulty injector did it !
  23. I have a 1993 Impreza , auto , awd and EJ18. If you drive it like a 80 years old lady , yes , it is slow , and does not switch down to lower gear. But the "power" option works very nice , just kick twice in a second your accelerator pedal.....
  24. On my 1986 version , there is a detection for on burned bulb. This detection failed (faulty relais inside) but for sure no reason not to buy,,,
