Got a BRAT, needs some work but she'll shine soon enough! Replacing gaskets (Head Gasket) Correct me if I'm wrong here, but it seems you cannot get the head off without taking the engine out? So I loosened the heads and tomorrow we'll take out the engine mounts and transmission and jack up the engine so I can get the clearance we need.

By the way Rabbit's my buddy who sold it to me, and has been crucial in helping fix her up. Can't say enough good things about him. -

hahaha RABBIT!?! -
Right on, It doesn't leak oil actually, and it doesn't have any rust... I know pretty unbelievable (I'll probably find some when I start taking things apart) How many miles are on it, 160,000.. or 180,000 something like that I don't remember sub 200k, which is pretty remarkable, the things in pretty dang good shape. Just needs a new head gasket. Thanks everyone. I'm going to give her a big tune up so I'm going to buy the gasket's, oil, filters, plugs etc today and get this bad boy on the road. Never worked on a boxer engine or a subaru period... but I'm about to learn.

Hey everyone, I've searched through he forums for a bunch of different things and couldn't really find what I was looking for. SO I'll just ask, I'm a brand spankin new owner of my first Subaru BRAT, I've always been a Ford guy but lately I've been getting into this Subaru thing. What things should I know about these awesome machines. You know the basics, what kinda gas should I use / can I use regular (EA81) is there a certain type of oil these engines like? any common problems people have. I know this is a very broad question, but if anyone has any info that would be great. Just trying to learn. I've been reading a lot of threads and learned a lot so far, as a newbie, it's hard to wade through he non brat stuff. Thanks

I don't yet. But I will. tried to post the one picture I had of it but it said it was too big. I'll figure it out. Yeah BRAT's are pretty cool I've always wanted one. -
Hey everyone, I'm Dan Kindred in Washington state. Just found this sight and it's already helped me big time. I just bought an 81 Brat for 600 bucks. It was taken care of pretty dang well, everything dent free except for the drivers side fender. Bought it from my friend who bought from someone. the owner said it has a blown head gasket, I was there when my buddy drove it up on the trailer... the owner cried a little. anyways, my friend had a kid and never got around to fixing it. sold it to me after sitting in the garage for 3 years. and now... AT LAST I"M A BRAT OWNER!
