  1. my AT speedo cable (1991 4.11 4eat awd to 1991 NA cable 4.11 5mt awd) was too short for the new trans by a couple inches. I think the issue is that turbo 5mt's have the speedo gear drive on the trans a few inches closer to the front of the car than the cable ones do. I dunno why they didnt just put the cable in the same dang spot. subaru does a lot of wierd crap like that. but rest assured, you can always(almost) find a combination of stock pieces to get the job done.
  2. also people running bone stock ej22e shortblocks with ej25 heads in the 300whp range but thats with a lot of supporting mods ie huge intercooler and good tune.
  3. also it is stickied in the legacycentral drivetrain forum. that writeup will be your best friend while doing the swap. read it thoroughly like 5-10 times before you start the swap especially the wiring part. also if you want a starter interlock(push the clutch in to start) and/or cruise control you will need: starter interlock relay and as much of those wires as you can cut cruise relay cruise computer a bunch of wire depending on what diff ratio you have you may need to grab the correct rear diff too, or just get the right trans. also, clutch cable MT speedo cable shifter assembly shifter console, boot and knob driveshaft yes trans mount yes
  4. how is shaving the head more expensive, more difficult, and less benefit than different pistons? its really none of those. much cheaper to have them take .010 or whatever off the head than open up a block, rering and hone, plus the cost of custom pistons. any decent machine shop will skim the head as a matter of course when rebuilding, and you just have to tell them to go a little further. bottom line, its pointless to spend money increasing the compression on a ej22 unless you have a legacy/impreza and are in some kind of racing class like PGT that prohibits engine swaps. way more bang for the buck to put in an ej25 block or go turbo.
  5. no, the error being driving too fast for the conditions, not keeping a safe following distance and subsequently slamming on the brakes, etc. seen it done in soobs. in fact I was rear ended by an ea81 wagon a couple weeks ago.
  6. yeah that should work. not sure what youll be looking at as far as a compression ratio as we didnt get the 2.0 NA stateside.
  7. what is the low range on those guys? the earlier ones out of legacy GX's and such are like 1.15:1 with 3.9 diff gears or something to that effect.*might* be worht it if they have something closer to 2:1 and/or 4.44 diff gears but I bet its closer to 1.1xx:1.also maybe go to the yards down there and get 1 or 2 legacy GX dual range trans, I doubt youd have any trouble getting a bit of profit out of them back here. from what Ive seen off the rslibertyclub.org forums they go for anywhere from $200-400 aus and shipping should be what, 2-400us for a pallet? ps I still remember watching you jump the living *************** out of your wagon at wcss7, that was pretty cool.
  8. yeah... theyre called an ej25 shortblock! but I'm sure you guys are sick of hearing about that by now. ej22 has some sweet combos you can build out of them and various ej25 heads and blocks but as a unit the ej22 is not really worth playing around with other than skim the heads, delta cams and a little DIY porting action, or low boost turbo setup on the stock motor.
  9. congrats on getting a free legacy! go here: bbs.legacycentral.org use the search button quite a bit before you post. nearly every question you could possibly have has been covered at least once. as far as the most power for cheap, that seems to be a low boost turbo setup on mostly stock components.
  10. yes its true that the ej22t has oil squirters but for some reason subaru omitted them from the 22b, the pinnacle of subarus past and present. and those things make some serious power. if youre hell bent on trying this, why not build a test rig that you could pressurize some engine oil both cold and hot at the oil pressures er27's usually run at? it would kinda suck to build that engine and figure out you fubared it by drilling holes in the block. its just really kind of a drastic measure, and whats to say the oil stream will even aim correctly? could open up a whole other can of worms. but if you do it and it works, that will be pretty sweet. another option might be to drill bigger holes and tap them for ej22t oil squirters, which are springloaded to come open at a certain oil pressure that way you dont lose a little oil pressure on startup. it is pretty common for them to be sitting in the pan on ej22t's when they are opened up tho. er27's are closed deck eh, pretty sweet. do they take a good amount of power? better pistons I assume...
  11. sounds kinda out there. why do you need oil squirters? even the 22b does not have oil squirters.
  12. ivan stewart paint is sweet:cool: what suspension is that, stock?
  13. there is a guy who has a caged out hatch but its an offroader. I think its unhatched too? running on LPG.
  14. paris dakar on oln? dunno if its still being aired, my TV broke.
  15. why not use some 6 lug rotors or wheels as a pattern?
  16. that would be more a function of where the torque is in the powerband. huge runners- up high small runners-down low
  17. ok, say you were to take a regular, bone stock ea81 long block and boost it. vf11, good tune, intercooler etc. what would be pretty much the limit? sounds like not many have really pushed the ea81 to the limit tho. what do you mean by tighter valve train, stiffer springs or what?
  18. cool, yotas or what? for tuff truck a truss might come in handy...
  19. there was that brat that was built for tuff truck that was for sale on here, I think he was out of PA? site was cool and had lots of vids. propane would be cool, the ultimate fuel for boosted cars pretty much. 105-110 octane, cheap-ish, some cooling effect, etc. what mixer and reg are you going to run? blow through? you could run a small bottle to save weight/space since those arent exactly long distance events. like the size of the torch ones lol. got anything planned for the suspension? cough a-arms cough
  20. fwiw my friend who ran dual 44 DCOE's on his L20 510 wagon got 14mpg. just go 44's or 45's, 48's are much more $$$ and might be a little overcarbed for as mild an engine as an ej22(tiny cams, heads arent that great, low-ish compression). or just do some ITB's out of literbike throttlebodies. you'd have the high-tech vw thing going. it might be doable with the ej22e ecu, TPS is fine but what to do about the MAF. you could also get a busted 911 cooling fan setup for cheap and set it on there to confuse people.
  21. I believe the porubi guy used megasquirt to run the ignition. the webers appear to be set up as carbs tho. as you can see he is running some sort of distributorless ignition. myself, I would have used some tumble valves from a wrx(3/4 throttle plates between the head and mani that also houses the injectors- look em up on nasioc) converted into ITB's since they bolt to the phase II heads. if you were to go to the trouble to do all the work that involved with a swap like this, could you do it with a SOHC ej25? you can find one for like $500 if you look the right places. more cc's, WAY better heads(outflows an LS1 in stock form), capable of 8k rpm in stock form, etc. the principal with the distributor would be much the same but maybe the practice would not I dunno. monstaru? as far as fabbing the manifolds, I'd just do em out of steel. trace the gaskets on some 1/4" plate, put a couple pieces of tube between them, you get the idea. aluminum would be bad rump roast if you have those skills/equipment. personally I'd never bother to convert an ej engine to carb. ITB's yes.
  22. from what I read a couple years ago the justy clutch is too weak to hold more than 90hp or so.
  23. the main problem with ea82t's is that the heads warp, correct? well cryo treating cast aluminum improves its resistance to deformation under high temperatures. I've not heard much about its use with cylinder heads, but with cast pistons the gains are great enough that you can run tighter tolerances in some cases. also maybe some copper head gaskets? also why not just have the block or the heads decked or make a custom copper head gasket to get you into the mid to low 8's with the 7.7:1 pistons? mid 9's and turbo with a known weak engine like the ea82 just seems like way more trouble than its worth.
