Somebody will probably want to shoot me for this, but a good 'ol Loyale wagon is you best bet - except for some of the 1990 model year, all are N/A, and the only MT 4WD offered was pushbutton; all were fuel injection. Parts should be easier too, as the cars were made thru 1994. Don't know if any N/As were made with a sunroof - I doubt any Loyales had sunroofs. They aren't that fancy, but they will do the job, and have good reliability. Parts are very common for SPFI fuel injection systems (what the loyale has - made from 1986 thru 1994 - virtually all parts are interchangeable between the different model years), and they are pretty cheap (EA82 car). Generally speaking, the newer the better; but all N/A engines are very strong - and there was virtually no change throughout the production, so all are good choices. -
I don't own an XT6 - but I will say that I think it was one of the coolest 80's Subarus because of the flat-6 engine I would probably buy one if I could - the air suspension will probably give you trouble, so you probably will want to convert it to conventional shocks/struts at some point - the modding possibilities are endless because the pistons are interchangeable with the EA82 (1.8L flat four) engine's - which means you can turbo it

Yes - I once restored an MG from nothing but a bunch of boxes of parts - that was a waste - if the rust is not too bad, DEFINATELY worth restoring; that is a RARE car - if rust is really bad, I'd think twice, but still probably restore it

It is Subaru's first "real" car - made in 69? or theraboust - the 360 was their first car - but it had a 360cc 2-cylinder, 2-cycle engine - not going anywhere fast, and you have to mix your oil and gas the FF-1 was the first Soob to be imported by SOA in 1970ish - don't know what the FF stands for - maybe Flat Four? -
mine was repainted about seven years ago by Maaco - had to be done twice, b/c they did not do proper prep the first time - and now that the paint is flaking off, I can see they did not do it right the second time either - would NEVER use them again - I found a good local shop, that is about as expensive as their "premium" deal - but they actually do the work

That's actually a very good answer - I got well over 30mpg on a clean carb once (going 75+ on the highway!!!) - the same carb dropped to under 20mpg when it got dirty - so it has everything to do with the cleanness, not really the car it came off of -
Can 5sp DR's be rebuilt?

A FSM will have the detail on the trannies (and the rebuild proceedure/part #s) get the one for the model year of the trannies you have - yes they are very rebuildable - I know some board members have rebuilt their trannies - not sure who though - don't know about parts availability, but I would guess some are left the innards of the soob tranny looks like all the other manuals I have seen before (albeit slightly different component placement) - but I have never rebuilt a tranny before - so I can't say if it is any harder to rebuild unless the high-miles tranny is having issues, I would not worry about it - manual trannies work or don't - you have to screw them up for them to fail (hence why I like them more than autos) are you sure it is the synchros - have you changed your gear oil lately? -
I always try to sand/paint before it gets too bad - I am far enough south that rust isn't too bad here

OMG - I am sorry about that - my car withstood a 45mph crash (T-bone front end damage on our soob - obliterated the econo-sedan it hit) and was still very repairable (saved my mom, who had a disoriented driver pull out in front of her going the wrong way) - I certainly won't mess with Honda (not that I have ever had any desire to anyway). My car gets called a variety of things, generally it is referred to as "the Soob" or "sooby" but I occasionally call it "The Silver Streak" because it is lightning silver, and I do not linger (it's my lead feet ).

All the symptoms you have are indicate a choke or idle adjustment problem, it would be a good idea to rule them out first - if you did anything with the engine (like removing the heads) that would affect what should be the proper adjustment. (it would remove the carbon from the combustion chambers) The idle adjustment screw affects the idle ONLY when the engine is warm and at operating temp, hence why it (or your mixture adjustment) is probably your problem - they only affect your engine at normal operating temp. - at least try adjusting them before you do a rebuild, or removing the idle adjustment screw and squirting carb cleaner down into it I have extensive expierence working with that carb, because up until recently, I had one on my car - they are tempermental, and a bit unpredictable. A rebuild is very difficult on these carbs, I have rebuilt a variety of different carbs, and Hitachi's are the most difficult to do. You should avoid it if at all possible. -

I would bet you good 'ol hardware store would have one - or most any chain auto parts stores (if you feel the need to install one). -

all but the passenger side front axle are orig. on my car - but it has been a city driver most of its life I see it as potientially causing probs, but I don't know for sure -

what he said and timing, choke adjustment - me thinks your choke is opening too far/too long idle mixture adjustment - in center front of carb idle speed adj - near linkage, screw faces you when looking head-on, make sure not to get it confused with the idle mixture adjust both idle adjust screws should be adjusted w/ engine warm -

I made beautiful little bolt-on caps for my ASV system - why the heck would you want to carb an SPFI head? - furthermore, why would you bother hooking up the stupid ASV system? - I think it is possible to go the other way, but I would be worried about heat dissappation from the modded head -

I contacted Subaru 6+ months ago before I got my FSM off Ebay - yes they do have them for the earlier models, but they are hard to find (the person I talked to wasn't sure if it was available) - I think it would be a VERY good idea to scan everything in pre-EA82, as I think all of that info will become very hard to find, and I think that 85-89 should come eventually, as it is inevitable that we will need it someday. pdf would be the best format (smallest storage size). We should not have to destroy the manuals to scan them - so we won't have to sacrifice anything. -
I am in a bit of a pickle - I went to replace my O2 sensor (was running very rich - and seemed the reason for the problem) - had to remove Y-pipe anyway (exhaust leak downstream from sensor) - and I discovered to my disgust that it was rusted to the point of being fused in place (WD40 and 3-in-one had no effect) I actually broke my O2 sensor socket on it :cool: (yes, with my 2' breaking bar - must have been a bad cast) Anyway - I had to use an impact wrench to get it out - and there is not much left of the threads - found that out after I stripped my new O2 sensor on it I looked up the price of a HeliCoil O2 sensor kit - around $100 I don't have any way to get another Y-pipe (save a 4-hour drive). Should I just drag the Y-pipe over to a shop and have them do the HeliCoiling? Any other advice? - it would be appreciated

As I recall the diameter is the same for all - EA82 pistons had compression ratios 9.0:1 (carb/early MPFI N/A), 9.5:1 (SPFI/late MPFI N/A), and for turbos, 7.7:1 I think the EA81 had 8.7:1 compression Don't know about EA71 All are 3-ring slipper type - and I think all are interchangeable

That and there are no ports in the block for the ASV system. The difference in camshafts is the time of opening and closing - I think the carb's are open longer -
yes, experience - subaru's drivetrain has no hubs that need to be locked or anything - you just drive it - I already know a friend who had to overhaul the front end of his F-250 b/c his "automatically locking hubs" ate their innards - try anything that Chrystler corp. has made that is 2WD or AWD - needs a tranny every 50k if it is actually driven - the quality is not there nor is the safety in crashes unless you are in something twice the size of the forrester Subaru's AWD system not only improves handeling under adverse conditions, but also under normal driving conditions if nothing else - look at consumer report's year-end car report on Subaru reliability vs. other small SUV's - there are numbers Less than 10% made ever expierenced head gasket failure (number comes from a professional Subaru mechanic via. SOA) - now lets compare that to the number of early Ford Focuses that lost rear wheels or "new" Dodge Caravans that don't have trannies worth a flip - the early 2.5L mishap was rather minor by comparison of number of failures and the severity - head gaskets are nasty when they fail - but they won't cause a traffic accident, like loosing a wheel or tranny will - it was a disappointment because it fell below Subaru's usual reliabilty expectations - look at the big three's head gasket woes for compairison I already stated small, economy SUV's - three have something that may fit that catagory, and I already addressed Audi: Honda - economy stops at gas pump - no MT 4WD in a forrester size for '05 model - I should know as I was auto shopping recently Mitsubishi - bad trannies/drivetrain - not seen an AWD manual since the mid '90s - and even so, still bad drivetrain - tendency to strip gears on MT boxes used for light-duty applications, and torque converters on automatics Toyota - no MT offered for '05 - I was just shopping and looked - they offer MTs in model lines that have AWD cars, you just can't get AWD with a MT None of these can come close to the safety record of Subaru either Jeep - the wrangler - that is it - the cherokee hasn't had a manual since 04 or earlier (it is really a rebadged Durango) - neither Wrangler or Cherokee are economy thought they have 4WD BMW has had some of the biggest recalls in the company's history with its AWD system and the X3 and X5 SUV's (I have some friends who recently sold their X5 because of how unstable it was on the road) - the 3 and 5 both are RWD only cars, BMW does not compete with Subaru anyway as Subaru does not make a luxury car Porsche is still new to the game - not enough on the road to tell - and they are not in competition with Subaru as Subaru makes nothing that high-end The only one you have not mentioned is Volvo - and they are probably Subaru's biggest threat - and I know from yet another good friend that it sucks - he junked his '84 for a brand new volvo AWD wagon - likes amenities, hates traction I am around a lot of car people, so I keep in the loop as to what the problems with all the manufacturers are from people who actually own the cars. It helps to know what is really going on out there - Car and Driver and most other "auto magazines" are a real joke and full of hype Look at the performance characteristics of the drivetrains in all of these vehicles - you will see the differances very quickly Ha ha ha - really - do you believe the US is Subaru's main focus? Furthermore, did you actually pay attention to the GM deal? They produce cars for the entire world - Subarus are common in Australia and New Zealand - as well as other more hostile environments We in the US see very little of what Subaru actually makes - they have a dual-range AWD transmission available in Europe and Japan They make a wide range of smaller passenger cars and other vehicles exclusively for their own home market - there is VERY little concern about their place in the US market Renault and Peugeot as well as many other manufacturers have already prooven that the US market is not a key component of corporate success GM bought 20% of Subaru from Nissan - Nissan needed the money, and GM wanted Subaru's drivetrain technology - yes that is why they bought Subaru - it was published in the Raleigh News and Observer's Auto section when the deal took place - and already the Subaru boxer engine has appeared in Saab - funny coincidence

not only there, but CarQuest has them, they are available OEM, and I think NAPA has them too don't destroy a good engine for no reason
