my 79 brat started smoking..but only on deceleration..when idling or under power its ok,,when i let off the gas it puffs smoke... it doesnt have the stock dip stick in the motor,,if its over filled with oil could it be causing the smoke? it seems to have the same lack luster power as before..

its back on the road.. replaced the hub and wheel seal..while it was down i replaced the drivers outer door handle, and cleaned up under the hood a little..gonna drive it around and retorque and on to the next project.looks like a heater vent door is stuck open ,its letting in cold air while driving..and the fan is making noise.

bulletproof replied to bulletproof's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
im going to build one. but im going to extend the area where the frame brackets meet the bumper so i can add D-rings..maybe some light tabs and a winch mount.. could you measure the tubing OD? -
ive been looking online and have been seeing brats with a pretty heavy duty looking square tube front bumper ,does anyone know what size the upper tubing is? and where could i find a rear hitch like the one shown?

bulletproof replied to Scooner's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
ive was a professional mechanic for 20 years, and a part time builder/fabricator (drag cars/ off road racers )since 2006.. ive spent more time on places rockauto and at autozone then ever before... theses little cars arent the easiset cars to find parts for... the learning curve is pretty steep. -
Hub stripped on trail
bulletproof replied to ironworkerboomer's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
80s jeep cj's had a 2 piece rear axle shaft.. one thing we did when installing new ones (when customer wouldnt spring for 1 piece axle kits), after we installed them we would have the customer bring it back in after a few days and we would retorque the nut..when i replace the hub i just stripped im going to retorque after running it a day or 2..- 8 replies

on inspection, the splines are gone in the drum,,shaft looks ok. ,,there where new brake shoes and wheelcylinders installed ,, i guess they didnt get the retaining nut tight enough?
-
i started hearing a grinding noise coming from the right rear,, after jacking it up ,the right rear hub spins free of the axle.. im guessing these hubs are splined ? and it took the splines out of the hub?

bulletproof replied to bulletproof's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
i have a big hose from both covers to the both of the air cleaner. the red hose should also go to the the bottom of the air cleaner.. that leaves a hose from the intake that has the brass fitting in it.my chilton skips the 79 .. . -
you could write a book on what i don't know about these cars !! down the road i want to put a bigger motor and dual range trans in the brat.. what is the best option? im fine with EFI ..what years and models .what should i steer clear of?
